We always try to get here for the May day celebrations and see the school children of the village strut their stuff in what must be a ceremony steeped in history.
There is always a good turnout and it's well supported by families and friends.
There is usually a market in the street as well which adds to the jovial atmosphere and happy ambience.

Not much more to say - except drivers need to be wary of its position in the middle of the road. I've never been there on May Day so I suppose I'm missing out.

I see this pole in the middle of a cross roads every day as I go to work. It certainly is in an odd place but am sure it looks good in full swing.

This bar looks much better from the outside. I was thinking people dancing around the pole happily, generally having a good time. When I walked through their doors, I knew whoever named this premises had a huge sense of humour. It was depressing. The smell of cigarette smoke inside, was enough to make you leave, never mind the backward looking, set-in-their ways locals, that looked like they did not want any strangers in their bar. I about-turned, and got out of there asap. There are some good bars in town, don't waste your time here.

This pub does not serve food; it has no gaming machines; there is no live or piped music; the floors are ancient lino and the seats are covered in black Rexine; the TV is ONLY turned on for VERY important sporting events; the use of mobile phones is frowned upon. Have I described perfection yet? No? What more could you want? A perfect pint of Guinness perhaps? Troublemakers chucked out before they even start making trouble? Bar staff who not only remember your complicated round of drinks an hour later but also BRING YOUR DRINKS TO YOU? Got them all. Try Friday tea-time (if you can get in the door). The noise of convivial conversation will deafen you!

The Maypole in Holywood is a centre piece for the May Day celebrations. Every year there is a fantastic market, which leads up the maypole where there is a dance. Well worth a visit as Holywood is just outside of Belfast and is accessible by train.

Holywood town is worth a visit, lots of coffee shops, eateries and charity shops but if you come simply for the maypole you may be disappointed to find it is just a pole in the middle of the road.

Ok, it may be a pole rather than a stick but it could barely be called an attraction. People drive past it every day without really noticing it and, frankly, that seems about right. Nothing to see here - move along.

I know it's been marketed as the only Maypole in Ireland, but truthfully, it is not recognised - much less celebrated..... (The religious 'Right' are in a quandary over this....) .... Truth is.... it looks like a traffic light, you'd hardly notice it..... I DO love the pub though....
