With very helpful staff on duty when we visited, we found this visitor centre to be smart, modern and interesting. As well as lots of very good information boards about the origins and growth of the city, and the various tourist attractions to explore, the staff were able to give general information about what to see and do in the area.

My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to Palace Green and passed the Durham World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, although closed when we were here I must say I was so impressed with the building that houses the visitor centre.
Constructed in the 1830's from medieval stone, its such an iconic structure, one thing I noticed was that the building has no chimneys, found out later that is because the building was built in an exposed position and thus wind erosion has damaged the chimneys which were removed, its a wonderful looking building, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate on Palace Green.

Interesting exhibits and films giving us a potted history of Durham. As we are from Northumberland not far from Lindisfarne it was of local interest as well.

The Heritage Center is a great source of information as well as where you purchase your tickets to visit the castle.
Entry to the Heritage Center is free of charge, you can pick up handy street maps and brochures as well as purchasing the usual gifts, mugs, coasters, etc etc.

Small but excellent visitors centre. Staff more than willing to answer questions. Assorted souvenirs on sale. Many to do with the university of course. Good atmosphere.

Durham really misses the mark here with this museum. It is like going to a tiny local history museum in a little village that is trying to show off it's history with a bit of old local advertisements, a bit of memorabilia and lots of signs and posters. Come into the 21st century. It even smells mouldy. Staff helpful and friendly. I would love to learn so much more about Durham, but didn't get it here.

I think this feedback is for the wrong venue. Next time look for us on Owengate which is the road to Palace Green - Durham's World Heritage Site Visitor Centre. See you soon!

The first place that we visited in Durham that put us on the forward foot to explore the city.
Very friendly and helpful staff/volunteers, maps provided, neat little information centre and its worth watching the video for background information before heading out to explore.
