Visited this Yesterday, their were 8 in our little party and we all enjoyed the visit immensely it was wet when we first arrived but had dried up before we finished and we got the full impact of some of the flowers that are still in full bloom.

The gardens are well worth a visit and good value at £4. Some areas seem a little neglected. Being largely outside, I don't really see how this can relate to Covid but the gardens are perhaps getting back on their feet after an understandable interruption to normal activity. There are many beautiful and intriguing walks with varied plants and trees and informative signage. The maps everywhere are really helpful. It's a shame that the hide and glasshouses are closed. Given that restrictions have fully eased now I don't really understand this decision. If people don't want to go into an enclosed space they can simply choose not to do so. The gardens no longer take cash. That's inexcusable. Cash has never been a Covid vector. It's being used as an excuse to get rid of (inconvenient?) cash from many places but if this disturbing trend continues we'll miss it when it's gone. Not everyone has electronic means of payment so there's a risk of exclusion of sections of the community. It also means that every transaction is traced (privacy implications) and that a finance company always takes a cut of the transaction (higher prices or lower margins). I really hope that you'll review and reverse this policy.

Many thanks for your review. We are working on reopening the greenhouses and bird hide as soon as possible. With regards to not taking cash payments, this was part of the wider Durham University Covid-19 risk assessment and initially implemented to prevent cash handling within the team. We have no immediate plans to reinstate cash payments as we head into winter, however we will monitor feedback carefully and review the situation over the coming months.

Looked a bit neglected when we visited not sure if that was Covid related? The area near the cafe was neat and tidy

There are some parts of the garden that we have simply have to leave at the moment due to the pandemic and issues its causing for us so we can concentrate our efforts onto keeping the grass cut, plants watered and the main areas looking good. We hope to catch up with all the work very soon.

We thoroughly enjoyed a stroll around the gardens. The “science trail” excerpts were genuinely interesting including to two science (physical rather than biological) PhDs! I’m not sure about the time Trip Advisor recommends - you’d struggle to fill 3 hours - more like 45-75 minutes.

We enjoyed our first visit to the gardens and will return. We never saw it all and some parts may still be closed due to Covid.

The majority of the gardens are open now. The greenhouses, bird hide and seating/retail in the Visitor Centre remain closed but we are working on reopening these very soon. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Staying in Durham so decided to visit this lovely garden and was worth every penny. Could happily spend more than a few hours here and loads of information available. Plenty for children as well. Small car park which is free. Probably would need to drive wherever you are.

Thank you for a lovely review. You can get the No 6 bus from the City Centre and the driver can advise where to get off for the Botanic Garden. Or it is around a 25 minute walk from the centre.

A really nice place to go to enjoy some plants which aren't often seen. I chose to go first thing in the morning which is ideal for people who like to be able to take in the surroundings in a more tranquil atmosphere.

Lovely oasis of calm in truly bustling city and sited within the University campus. Great set out grounds and well maintained. So much to see in truth. Cost to visitors £4 each, so not unreasonable at all. There are lots of interesting features and sculptures around the garden. My wife and I really enjoyed the experience.
