About
Crook Hall is a Medieval Manor house built circa 1217 and is one of the oldest inhabited houses in Durham City. Home to the Bell Family since 1995, the Medieval Hall merges into a Jacobean Manor house which in turn merges into a Georgian Town house reflecting its development over the centuries. The Hall provides a spectacular backdrop to the 5 acres of stunning gardens. Visitors from all over the world come to share in the timeless magic of Crook Hall and leave inspired by these idyllic English gardens. Afternoon Tea is served in the beautiful Georgian Drawing Room. We are open from Sunday to Wednesday and welcome visitors throughout the year. We have two modern self catering apartments available in the heart of Durham City. We are a unique, historic wedding venue providing exclusive use of a beautiful and romantic setting. Our Licensed Garden Gate Café is open 7 days a week from 9:30am - 5pm serving breakfasts, light lunches and refreshments along with wines and local ales

The place is closed down and in liquidation so please don't waste your time and fuel driving there like we did today. Dissapointed that TA still have it up on their system.

Visited Crook Hall today, first “outing” since lockdown began. I live locally and have been to the gardens quite a few times, and regularly call in to the cafe for breakfast, lunch or just a yummy cheese scone and coffee. Due to current restrictions the cafe is closed at the moment but you could use the loo and they had takeaway tea and coffee. The gardens were delightful, the highlight for me this time being the poppies (so many colours) and the roses, but it all looked gorgeous. It’s well worth a visit to this peaceful corner of Durham and in these strange uncertain times a place like this is much appreciated.

I love this cafe because you can eat on the terrace with your dog and they get treats too...but..I feel aggrieved that cyclists and students get discounts yet elderly loyal customers pay full price (I know cyclists that eat drink here and they are financially well off as are some students whilst some elderly can only afford it maybe once a month )

Excellent little house and garden with a tea room in Durham, well worth a visit even in February when we were there.

Thank you so much for your review. .... and a big thank you for pointing out that the garden is good to visit in the winter months. Many people only come in the spring and summer but I think that they are missing out. There is a different beauty to be enjoyed during the winter. The fabric of the house and garden is revealed when the foliage has died back, and the winter flowering shrubs and bulbs are gorgeous. Then of course there is the added benefit of no crowds and a reduced entry fee. Thank you again.

We were lucky we were using our sat-nav to find the gardens, not the easiest place to find - unless you're a local. It was a lovely day, the plants were looking at their best - and we had a lovely snack in the cafe.

Yes you are right- we can be tricky to find. I am so glad that your sat nav guided you here. If people ring for directions I usually advise them to head for the city centre then follow the brown tourist information signs. We are right next to the river, just along from the Radisson hotel. If someone is already in town we are easy walking distance from the market place, again there are signs. Thank you for your helpful review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your visit.

Wonderful afternoon. On arrival we were shown to our tea room (was 11 of us) and served a glass of fizz and welcome serving of mini sausages and delicious quiche. This was promptly followed by the afternoon tea proper. Excellent sandwiches, scrumptious scones with jam and cream followed by an assortment of homemade cakes. All washed down with choice of teas or coffee.
Having checked out future events we are already planning next visit.

The most amazing scone I have ever tasted. The setting was absolutely beautiful, the food was to die for and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It was a really beautiful day for me my dad and sister, something we really needed, and without a doubt we will visit again because it was so enjoyable.

What a wonderful review. Thank you. I am so glad that you and your family all enjoyed it. You have highlighted the three things that our team think are really important: the food, the service and the surroundings. We believe that if we can excel in all three our guests will have a fantastic experience so it is very affirming to read your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you, your dad and your sister back again soon.

We have visited Crook Hall and Gardens a couple of times and enjoyed our visits. We choose to visit in the spring and later in autumn to see the gardens at their best. We preferred the cafe in the grounds too the one near the entrance.

Thank you for this lovely review. I too love the gardens in the spring and autumn. The colours are fabulous aren't they? The two cafes have very different atmospheres, it is always interesting to hear guests' preferences. Thank you.
