This is real gem of a house! Full of character, with wonderful details, Blackwell is a marvellous example of the Arts and Crafts movement at its best: functional and beautiful, where even the door handles are a part of the overall design.

The arts & crafts movement has no better showcase than Blackwell, a wonderfully preserved house on the shores of Lake Windermere. The beauty of its features, the wood panelling and the overall atmosphere of calm, well being must be experienced first hand. When you have enjoyed the house, grounds and excellent gift shop, try the cafe - homemade cakes to... More

Fantastic house, I felt really at home there. It's quite dark with all the wood panelling but it seems to be well lit as it doesn't feel heavy. We visited between mealtimes so couldn't enjoy the inviting cafe - maybe next time, it's certainly worth another visit.

I enjoyed visiting this property, which contains some lovely examples of art nouveau features. The cafe serves good food too. Views over Windermere are lovely.

Stumbled upon this place and its lovely, however, the products for sale are exceedingly expensive if not really beautiful. The cafe on the other hand is fantastic value for money - Cream Tea for £4 per person and was beautiful.

This house is one of the best arts and crafts houses and is open all year round. It takes about an hour to see everything and the time is well spent as it is a very unusual property, both in design and furnishings.

The house is lovely, particularly the ground floor with the beautiful drawing room. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great when we visited so we didn't see very much of the grounds.

Anyone reading this review should be aware that I am biased in as much as I am a member of the Lakeland Arts Trust which owns and maintains the property as well as the excellent Abbott Hall Art Gallery in Kendal. Membership benefits include free unlimited entry to both. Blackwell was built for a wealthy Manchester brewery owner just at... More

Not the easiest place to find but well worth persevering for a lovely arts and crafts house with great views over Windermere. It has a wonderful shop full of books , ceramics, glass and jewellery by contemporary artists. The cafe is also great with fresh cakes and coffeee and tea. Light meals were also on offer and the staff were... More

A really interesting place to visit, nice to have map/guide included in entry price. There is a full guide available to purchase which is well worth while.Lots to see and the history of the house is interesting too. Stayed for lunch menu a bit restricted but what we had was very nice. Plenty of parking. It was fairly quite when... More
