Having sent emails/made a number of calls to book, we travelled over an hour to Appleby Castle for afternoon tea which our friends had very kindly bought us for a gift. We were made to feel very unwelcome when we arrived and were simply told...More
No direction or focus. Staff young and unsure of themselves. Very expensive breakfast and it was not worth it. They didn't know that Peroni was a lager. They reckon they don't sell lager!! But funnily enough sell Peroni ... Rooms basic and up 3 flights...More
Our guide tried to bring some personality into the hour long tour but he really didnt have a lot to work with. There is only two points at which you are in the castle on the tour, once at the base of the tower when...More
I was taken here by my boyfriend as a surprise night away and he had chosen here for the character and the history. On arrival the rain was horrendous and we struggled to get our bearings driving round we entered into the caste grounds parked...More

Thank you for your review.
You visited on a Buy A Gift voucher and had booked the incorrect dates. Your booking was for Friday night and not Saturday night. The only room we had left available was a far superior room than you had paid...More
Stayed here in the spring when the evenings were still dark, so the first disappointment was to unload car then walk up the very poorly lit, long drive. We struggled! When we eventually found reception, the receptionist greeted us with an air of superiority and...More
Me and my girlfriend found the hotel on booking.com and liked the idea of staying in the castle.

This is a real castle. Wasn’t expecting a Hilton so was not too disappointed. Lots of realism as would be expected from an old building but
If you are charging 4star price having guest guess how to get in and have the parking probably 600...More

You should contact the card company and explain the situation and they can cancel the authorisation. Usually when l book a room in a hotel, the card is just held in reserve on the booked room but it's not required until l have stayed and l go to pay the bill, even then l can use a different card to pay, but to save complications, l always give the card that l booked the room on.
When you didn't go ahead with the booking or you later cancelled the room, your card details should have been cancelled along with your booking. It is against DPA guidlines for a business to retain data beyond the requirement period. This is a point you may care to note because when a company violates these laws there are consequences for them. The Citizens Advice group can help you with this matter if you find that the hotel is causing you problems.

I am not sure if Margaret has the correct castle in mind since last year there was no café, although refreshments were served at the end of castle tours. The grounds were not open to the public last year due to H&S red tape & I have no idea if this has been resolved yet.
