About
While discovering the Forest of Dean, go beneath the Forest floor to discover a whole new world. This is a natural cave system mined for ochre pigments and iron ore for over 4,500 years. Nine large caverns and winding passageways are open to visitors, with exciting displays throughout your journey. On the surface, the Lamp Room Cafe serves delicious cakes, coffees and snacks. There's a great Gift Shop with studio ceramics, jewellery, gems and gifts. Children's play area. The Cafe, Gift shop and play area, can be visited separately from the Caves. Dogs are welcome in the cafe and shop but are not allowed underground. Nice walks over the surrounding common land (Clearwell Meend). Plenty of free parking. Exciting special events through the year, including underground music and theatre. Try the adventure caving, to the lower levels - check website for dates. Discover the Wonder of Under.

    Hole new world
Vis2ited the caves today: they are currently using prebooked slots only. System worked OK, althoughit seems to glitch if the full combination of tickets turns out not to be available for your proposed timeslot. Tour is self guided and starts with a small museum. It has some quite interesting items, including a section on miners who served in WWI. Overall it would benefit from a bit of a clean up. The caves are pretty extensive. Some of the paths are fairly steep and not always dry. Make sure you wear good shoes and have warmer clothing, fleeces and raincoats are not out of place. There are useful bits of information throughout the cave system. You can clearly see where red ochre deposits have been mined and where fires were set to break rock faces. A highlight is towards the end, where an installation gives some idea of what the caves were like before they were caves: the area was a prehistoric sea! We really enjoyed this visit, good value and would go again.

    excellent
Im going to keep this short as it needs no real explanation. Firstly an absolute must in these caves is take a coat. Yes thats right weather its 30 degrees outside you WILL need it, were talking about caves underground where damp accumulates and yes its cold. Now thats out of the way for your 8 pounds at first you will think whats going on her then, as you walk into an old room with a few old mining bits and pieces with some history. Then through a doorway into another corridor with not much and then boom you reach a shift that you won't be able to go down but you will hear recordings of old miners chatting away to eachother. But then! You are taken down into a 5000 yrs old world that is for better word breathtaking. At this point you are simply immersed and thrown into the past within moments. Now! Rocks may not be your thing but I would strongly suggest you just wallow and basque it its glory. Theres not many caves you will not get wet in and this is one of those places so again dont worry a coat wil suffice. The under ground pool with the prehistoric holograms as are the old miner shadows of the past are both haunting and a very exquisite touch 👌. Guys for your 8 pounds its well worth a 30 to 45 min walk underground. Enjoy.

    Cave Visit
Ideal visit which is not weather dependent. Large free car park on loose gravel. With a short walk to the cafe and cave entrance. Fair size cafe with toilets. Few visitors on a early March day. £8 per adult. Self guided tour. Its not your pretty cave like Cheddar or others but doesn't claim to be. Its a old natural cave but used for mining. Lighting good but some areas are darker than others. Its good its not falsely lit. A camera torch is ideal. Low ceilings in places and uneven loose floor could limit access a bit. Lots to read about the mine, mining and the village military history. Many old pieces of mining equipment. A few visual features but not many. Possibly could do with some interactive voices tell the miners story in places. Interesting visit of 1 to 2 hours. Small gift shop at the end.

Another great find we enjoyed these mining made caves we visited
Found this to be a great experience as there was also statues placed inside the caves to find and photograph when we visited. Entrance tickets bought online from website were cheap we felt and after leaving the caves we felt tickets were really cheap for such an interesting caves from mining done there first. We had been told about wearing a jacket or coat as it got very cold the further we went under ground through the mining shaft caves. And it did so we were glad we had taken notice of this valuable advice and followed it as well. We found all the statues placed to find and also took other photos before we finally found ourselves at the exit and after leaving the caves we came out in the shop and then had a welcomed cake and hot drink in the cafe before leaving. Highly Recommended we feel if you are in the area John & Sue Eastbourne UK

    Worth a visit
Clearwell Caves are worth a visit if you are looking for something to do for a few hours. We visited over the weekend with our 6-year-old who thoroughly enjoyed. The opportunity to meander through the caves at your own pace is great. The information on the way around is very informative and certainly captured all our imaginations. The venue is not weather dependant, so we took the opportunity to visit when it was raining and cold which suited perfectly. The entry price is very reasonable and there is plenty of free parking. We would highly recommend this nugget of history.

    Long lovely winding caves
We visited while COVID restrictions were in place so masks needed to be worn and there were no tours but we all really enjoyed it. We took our 2 sons (4 and 1) and my niece who is 6. We pushed our 1 year old round in the pushchair which was a bit of a work out but easy enough to do if you are not keen on carriers. The older children enjoyed running around the caves, exploring each section and was a good way to burn off some energy. I particularly enjoyed the projections, there is quite a lot of interesting information too - if you don't have kids pulling on you. Little cafe with tables outside, good cake, semi play area type set up in the woods opposite so the kids enjoyed running around there too. Quite cold as they say on the website so wrap up while in the caves. Good gift shop too.

    Very disorganized
I'm really gutted to be saying this but I feel I have to get in touch. My partner and i visited the caves to see santa with our 2 year old on Saturday 10th December at 4.45pm after a long drive from Malmesbury in Wiltshire as had heard great reviews for years but never was lucky enough in getting tickets for previous years with our elder 2 children. Everything was great on arrival despite the weather. We were let into the caves and within 2 minutes we were amongst a crowd of people all crammed in within the walkways down there. We were stuck here for nearly an hour amongst everybody else all trying to keep their children entertained. Many people said that it had never been like this before so we weren't sure what the issue was. Finally we were next in line to see santa and the lady dressed as an elf also said she had no idea what was going on. Then the guy who let us in at the beginning took her place and sort of apologised and said he shouldn't have let so many people down so soon or something similar.. it was all done jokingly so wasnt sure what to make of it but at this point nobody was seeing the funny side. Santa was a bit of a disappointment also .. no real effort was made to be a santa I'd say .. voice or characteristics and nothing really age appropriate about his approach to our 2 year old and sounded very scripted. We then walked on through passed a little hut where things had prices on and all looked very basic ... i thought this was another stall with things for sale. There was a young girl stood behind here, to who I said 'is this just a little shop or something' to which she just giggled and said nothing else without acknowledging our child who was clearly visible. I even said to my partner after walking on that the situation was a bit strange. We then walked through the caves which we couldnt of faulted apart from the previous disappointments we were already deflated by .. but it wasnt until we arrived at the shop at the end that we realised we hadnt had or seen anywhere to collect a gift for our daughter. I asked the ladies in the gift shop and they confirmed that it should have been from this previously mentioned hut. These women were very helpful and apologetic and managed to ask another staff member to go and get for us what we had missed. This gentleman wasnt sure as the elves may have already left and things been closed up but he went and came back with a paper bag with a cuddly toy in and a single chocolate coin. I'm not sure if this was supposed to be or whether this was all that was left but I'm sure there seemed to look more in the bags of others we saw leaving the caves. Overall a very disappointing experience with a lack of organisation it seemed and sad to of left there feeling like we did. The caves were great though just a shame about the rest. Sorry to have to write this but have to be honest and I wasnt alone in feeling like this at this visit in the day but appreciate our day just went from bad to worse.

Fantastic Time on the Deep Tour!
We (family of 5 adults) had a really excellent deep tour - Kay the guide was knowledgeable and able to answer all of our questions, as well as providing a ghost story or two. He pitched the activity very well to our group and we got a lot out of it. The caves/mines themselves were fascinating with lots to see throughout, and it felt adventurous with plenty of scrambling, crawling and squeezing through gaps. Thoroughly enjoyed by us all and we loved the bats too. We didn't visit the rest of the site other than the shop which had some nice products made locally. We have previously taken our grandparents to the show caves which they enjoyed a lot, especially the prehistoric fish projector. Thanks for a great afternoon, big shout out to Kay!

    Informative
A great place to go if it's raining. Worth taking your time going round reading all the plaques and listening to the commentaries. One or two nice touches with the prehistoric images on the water and the ghostly black figures with their pick axes
