After a 5 year absence from this railway I returned for a visit in late August. The Tanfield line maybe small in length but its unique and hard working, offering scenes that are not recreated anywhere else. Its a line I have loved since a child and I always will!

A small railway but staffed by friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who are clearly passionate about it. Good catering facilities and nice walks from the various stops

Brilliant! Very good value for money, can spend all day for one price, railway engines to visit in engine shed, scenic route to travel on, can break journey with no penalty, toilets available, cafe on site. 7 year old grandaughter loved it, travelled in carriage, on viewing veranda, and the engine driver even took her photo standing on the footplate.... What a little gem! Visited with my mum and sister for afternoon tea on the train. You need to pre book tickets which can be done via website. Every attention to detail taken, staff very attentive and genuine. John and Joseph looked after us in the carriage, taking time to find out about our visit. Dog friendly in non eating... More

My wife is keen on old locomotives, and so is her father. Her father is ninety years old. We booked for the Ploughman’s Lunch on the Tanfield Steam Railway. We asked to book four seats and two meals, because we are vegan, and my wife has some food intolerances, and we know we are difficult to feed. “No, no,” they... More

We had a lovely day out on the Tanfield railway. We took the first train from the main station at Andrews House, which was lightly loaded so we had a compartment to ourselves. The staff are lovely - very friendly and helpful, and it's good to see a fair number of younger people working on the railway too. The trip... More

We visited as a family of 4 for a teddy bears picnic and really enjoyed the activities that were put on. The staff really helped make a great atmosphere and didn't stop smiling. It's very well priced and we really enjoyed the train ride. The history is amazing and we enjoyed several hours here wandering old tracks and exploring vintage... More

What a fantastic little railway! Pleasant staff, lovely rustic setting, loads of history at every turn. Engine and carriage sheds are not to be missed, again there is history everywhere you look. Entry is free, you only pay to go on the train. If I had to make one negative comment, it is that this railway, like so many other... More

A great team of enthusiasts run this railway. The history details are excellent. The price was quite reasonable.
