AVOID! Racist Bouncer. Unsafe Experience. Not Worth Visiting.
Aug 2021
I visited Shetland for the first time last week for a short holiday and to see my best friend who lives there. To clarify, I am a British born Chinese, and I was told by my friend it can be racist here but I didn't believe him, and I thought with my short visit time, it wouldn't be too much of a problem. How WRONG I was. We decided to go out on a Saturday to experience the night life and apparently this was the only place that was open. Upon entry, the woman (main) bouncer at the door was more than happy to take our entry money (£5), but we were not given any evidence that we paid (no stamp or wristband). There was no cloakroom, instead there was a wall with lots of hooks that you are free to hang your belongings but it is also accessible to everyone and is part of the hallway towards the dance floor. Totally unsafe! The dance floor had a rule that no drinks were allowed so most people just put their drinks on the edge of the wall and tables. Anyone could easily just take your drink or spike it! Again, another safety problem. I lost my friend at some point that night so I went outside to find that he was smoking. I chilled with him to get some air but a few people I interacted with there were unpleasant, unfriendly, and unwelcoming, especially towards me even though I barely talked to them or even drank much. I was still pretty sober. Feeling unwanted, I decided to go back in but the woman bouncer took one look at me, shook her head as if to say, "No. You're not getting back in" and told me to go to the back of the line. I noticed she was letting other people freely go out and back in, and there was hardly any people of colour there (I was probably the only one), so forgetting my face would be difficult. She clearly singled me out and didn't want me back in. I felt awkward and excluded in that situation and was forced to go back to my friend for help. He came back with me and he pretty much used his white priviledge to convince her that I was with him, and she believed him no problem, so I was able to get back in but was told that if I go back out again I wouldn't be allowed back in. I felt embarrassed, and racially humiliated to the point that it just ruined the night for me so I left early but my friend stayed and continued to go out and allowed back in without problem. Clearly no sensitivity training was provided to these security staff.

Avoid if possible.

The place is not bad, with a dance floor and DJ and 3 bars. The staff however, don’t get me started! The door staff and security have zero people skills! They treat you like scum and it would seem most of them are power tripping. They love ruining your night and having their couple of hours of power every Saturday.

The pints are pretty flat and the no drinks on the dance floor rule is pretty stupid. Everyone has to leave their drinks on a table at the side. They may as well put up a sign saying ‘spiking table, please leave your drinks here and collect in 15 minutes after someone has kindly dropped 50ml rohypnol in it for your convenience.

Bad work ethics
Jan 2020 • Friends
In Shetland for Up Hellay ah, for job. Around resting, I was able to relax with work partner. opened the door and look around empty room. Staff jumped from behind bar was about to leave. English is bad, helped me take order helpful and polite. local option and a good whiskey. Bar had nobody just us. soon after sitting the bartender had gone. Only when in the bathroom did I noticed that she had sat behind the bar on the mobil. In the toilet dirty was not clean. Table us sat at sticky. Seats walls all sticky. Bartender friend came in. loudly remarked about work and job. My home you would not last long in. Respectful and hard work go long way and none shown. Shameful as nice place big waste

Whilst up for work over the festive me and the boys thought we would give this place a shot...it’s bonkers but in a good way! The upstairs had two rooms one with a light up dance floor..one like a working men’s function room...the downstairs bar was very modern and comfy. Complete mix of ages and crowd seemed really nice. Will be back when next posted north :)

Where dreams go to die

Literally the armpit of Scotland, a well earned fiver could gain you entry to the worst night of your life.. This public house may as well be a public toilet that serves chemical infused beer and remorse. The bar manager has the IQ of a bag of wet shoes and as about as charming as a slapped arse, serious power trip issues and has zero people skills. Collect 5 packets of crips and you could be a Wheel Bar bouncer too!

Don't waste your time, money or dignity drinking here, literally anywhere else would be a better choice.

Lovely pub. Recently been refurbished and looks lovely! By far the best coffee I’ve tried in town! Can even grab a hot snack from a selection of local pies and sausage rolls. Staff are very polite and helpful.

Been to this pub many of occasions and have always been greeted with a friendly face. I use it more often at lunch time for their fantastic latte, I do prefer the down stairs even when am out at the weekend. The door men and are approachable lovey and fair.

Shetlands finest.

Worse than a bar in the arctic, full of terrible staff, frequent drama and more slags than a coal mine.
