Do not miss this small museum
Jul 2020
I was here in July 2018 and the docent on duty was incredibly well informed. She gave me her presentation and then answered everything I asked of her. The space is small, so it's closed while covid is an issue, but it's definitely worth a visit when things are opened up again.

Your trip to Shetland wouldn't be complete without visiting the Croft House Museum.
Sep 2019
Walking through the Croft House Museum really gives you an idea of what life in Shetland was like in the not-too-distant past. The docent who was there the day we visited said that he grew up in a very similar croft house. As you go through the rooms, there are notices which tell you about the living quarters and the furniture. I would plan on spending no more than an hour, and if you're driving south from Lerwick to Sumburgh Lighthouse or Jarlshof, it's on your way.

Interesting museum to visit!
May 2019
Really enjoyed visiting this museum. Fascinating place in an historic croft with a thatched roof. Nearby there are piles of peat to examine, and fascinating to see up close, after it has been cut. Also, there are Shetland Ponies playing in the field next door, which is a lot of fun to watch. Great place to visit while on Mainland Shetland.

Authentic historical crofthouse
Jun 2019
The Crofthouse Museum is quite nice. It is authentic and well-maintained. There are some outbuildings you can see as well. It will take you at most an hour unless you stop to chat with the knowledgable staff person. Take the time to go out to see the water mill.

A Must See
Sep 2019
A beautiful site that lets you see how people lived many years ago. The day we visited it was a bit windy and cool so they had a peat fire in the fireplace....made the room very cosy!!

Fascinating little piece of history
Sep 2019 • Friends
The steward was incredibly knowledgeable about the 1850s style Crofthouse. The peatfire was burning giving an atmospheric feeling. Its a lovely piece of Shetland social history.

Authetic Croft
Sep 2019
A very well preserved croft that has is presented as many crofts would have looked on these islands. You can fully explore and the warden is on hand to answer questions. There is also a nearby water wheel to visit and the beach is only a 5 minutes walk away with coastal paths to explore. There is a small entry fee to visit the croft (about £3 per person from memory).

Such an interesting place to visit
Sep 2019
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcomed at the house. The docent was able to tell us so much about the place and the island also. Sit by the peat fireplace and enjoy the conversation. Well worth the visit

Oh my goodness! So good
Sep 2019
SEPT 2018 This was my fifth visit to this tiny place and if I come to Shetland again I will definitely be going back! The steward was incredibly knowledgeable and eager to share information and despite the whole place only occupying a few square feet I felt as if I’d had a tour round the whole island. Just brilliant! Do not miss this little place and if the weather is horrible that’s the best time to go and experience a peat fire under the thatch. SEPT 2019 - I failed to click "submit" on my last year's review for some reason but there it now is, and having kept my promise to go back this year it was every bit as inspiring. The guide was excellent - very visit has had a different guide and each has added some personal knowledge and experience that has enhanced the visit. I would never miss a visit, it is something I look forward to every year and can never get bored with.

Great insight in how people used to live
Sep 2019
Brought here by our guide James Tait from Island-trails. We were treated by an impromptu thatching demonstration that was needed because of a leak in the roof. Very friendly and informative guide inside the house were it was very apparent how hard life used to be.
A visitworth your while!
