Regular visitor to Skippers and the Kirkwall Hotel through work. Just needed to comment on the food as it's always good. The two things that cannot be beaten anywhere is firstly their seafood Platter. Which is fresh and tastes fabulous every time and is prepared and presented to perfection. Secondly their gravy which is out of this world I would have it with everything (except the platter 😁).
Always sports on in the background and plenty of visitors/locals. If your in Orkney well worth dropping in.

Was in on A week night to watch the football. Plenty of screens and good atmosphere. Had to look hard for the staff at times but a warm welcome all the same.

Having travelled up on the evening plane I was invited out for something to eat and we chose Skippers. Always a friendly welcome and being a Monday it was quiet. A very good menu and as always I can never seem to make up my mind. Settled on the wrap with chicken and haggis with a mustard sauce. Well presented, freshly made up and piping hot. This was served with side salad and chips and a small dish of extra sauce.

One of the few places in Kirkwall where you can go with a wee dog and have a snack and a pint. Going there again.

A pleasant place to eat and be merry. Great food, happy staff, pleasant atmosphere, fine service and tasty beer on the side. People friendly as well as dogs.

Skipper's is the pub arm of the Kirkwall hotel, so you can count on the food being generally good in a less formal atmosphere. There are six TVs which were playing MTV classic videos the afternoon we were there. The music wasn't loud enough to drown out our conservation and we didn't have to shout over it - always a plus in my book.
There are three booths and several tables. The only booth free was the one next to the door and being December it was just a mite chilly. However, it was large and very comfy with enough space for our guide dog.
Food and drink orders are taken at the bar. The barman on duty had a good sense of humour and a good suggestion for a bevie that was refreshing but non-alcoholic. Hubby had his usual, Export in the red can. However, if I had wanted a beer, I did notice that they had my favourite local
Brewer Rob Hill's selections on tap.
Sometimes you just want something simple, filling and delicious. The meatball baguette at Skipper's was very good. Nice, plump, meatballs smothered with cheddar cheese in a baguette served with a side of green salad, coleslaw and chips (fries). The red sauce was just right, not overwhelmingly sloppy. It was such a large portion that I ate the meatballs out of the baguette.
Hubby had the roast of the day, he received a hefty portion of beef, gravy, roast potatos and a Yorkshire pudding. He was mightily pleased with the price, portion size and yummyiness. Once again we were too full to try any of the puddings (desserts).
The lavatories were very clean for a popular pub. In fact we were impressed by the cleanliness of the whole enterprise. It was a good place for lunch, once we ordered we didn't have long to wait. They serve food all day at the weekends which is awfully handy for those of us who can't stick to the rigid time schedule of 12 - 2.
The reason we are giving it a 4 instead of a 5 is that the pub while being neat and tidy lacks a certain cozy atmosphere that makes you want to linger all afternoon over a couple of pints and set the world to rights. It was also so chilly that I did feel as if I wanted to wear my parka at lunch!

Dined here on our first night in Kirkwall as we were looking for somewhere relaxed and dog friendly.
Ordered haggis fritters to start which were delicious and fresh and then we had a scampi and chips and a burger as our mains. Have to say the food was lovely and beyond expectations. The lady who served us from behind the bar was very friendly and welcoming ensuring we had everything we needed as well as being very accommodating to the fact we had a dog.
Prices reasonable and variety of drinks as well as pool and darts available if you want to make a night of it. Would go back!

We stopped in looking for a dinner somewhere in Kirkwall and luckily found a table. The menu was varied and the food was great. It's a bar, so it's noisy and a bit crowded, but there was a lot of turnover so we were glad we found it. The wait staff was friendly and prompt.

Skipper's was great for beer and whisky. We tried a few local brews and tasted some local whiskys. The bartender was happy to offer suggestions and insight into the offerings. We did not have food here but many others in the bar area were and seemed happy with they ordered. Enter around the corner from the Kirkwall Hotel main entrance.

Don't let the outside appearance put you off. Inside is spotlessly clean, lovely food, and a warm welcome. So good that we did'nt look for anywhere else to eat on our second day in Orkney, just headed back to Skipper's.
