Great guided tour
Sep 2021 • Family
A very interesting guided tour of the Earls and Bishops Palaces. Our guide, Corwen, was very well-informed and funny. We turned up a little late for the tour but he was kind enough to let us join, and even took the time afterwards to show us what we’d missed, which was much appreciated.

A fascinating site but be sure of opening times and the need to book in advance
Aug 2021
Our guide was well informed and very able to explain the context of the site. However, you should be sure to note the current opening times related to Covid restrictions. We found the site on 12 August and noted that the information at the gate indicated the site was open daily; it gave no indication of the need to book tickets. On the basis of that, we planned to visit on Sunday 15 August. However, it was not until we visited on the Sunday that we found a notice at the the ticket office (which could not be seen from the street) stating that the opening times were restricted and visits had to be booked in advance. We then had to re-plan the rest of our stay in the Orkneys to book and visit the site. Hence a mark down in my rating.
We felt that the information at the main gate should have been changed to reflect the prevailing arrangements, thus avoiding the frustration and
disappointment we (and others, we assume) experienced.

What a fascinating range of ruins with information boards to advise. Just wish they could speak to us to tell us their history which must be fantastic.

Amazing building
Aug 2021
Unfortunately I as only able to see the outside of the building during my visit, but it is still well worth spending some time wandering around the remains of this ornate palace as they are pretty spectacular!

Amazing building
Jul 2021
We were lucking in that it was only open for Historic Scotland members and we were given a very private tour by a trainee guide so we all had a wonderful time with plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

The Earl’s Palace is an interesting place to visit, but unfortunately it was only possible to walk around the outside during our visit.

One of a few interesting historic sites in Kirkwall

Amazing historical structure in the centre of Kirkwall
May 2021 • Solo
Amazing to find this feature in the centre of Kirkwall. Due to covid restrictions you can't enter the structure (normally a ticket purchase required) however you can access the grounds & walk around the exterior walls.
The St Magnus cathedral & Bishops Palace ruins are literally across the road - so the whole feel of what it was like in days past can be felt.

Good for history lovers

Nice place to go but I think they could have made it a bit more interesting and more family friendly.

Interesting to learn all about the history here! I would definitely purchase a tour book from Historic Scotland, I got mine there!

Must-go if you like history!
