Nestling on the shores of Rutland water, anyone with a phone or camera will be tempted to take a shot of the beautiful remains of the church. Reached by a little causeway off the main path, you can peep through the glass and look inside. Is it used for civil weddings? There are benches around the outside of the building so you can sit and enjoy the views across the lake or enjoy the sun and a break from the wind.

We had booked into the Best Western Normanton Park Hotel and decided to take a walk down to the Normanton Church.
We walked up to the entrance door, stood aside to let a couple leave the building.
Taking a chance, I asked the young lady, who appeared to be in charge, if I could take a none flash photo of the interior. She said that would be OK this once. So I took her up on her offer and got a photo, never available to me before during all our earlier visits.

Although we did not go inside, this striking church on Rutland water is, an ideal photo opportunity due to its location.
Our sat nav sent us towards a hedge but please follow towards the main entrance and once the barrier lifts, turn right where there are signs pointing towards the church which according to the signs was a 1/2 mile walk.
Parking is free for 15 minutes and £2 for the hour.
There are boat trips on the Rutland water which sail to the church which would be a nice alternative.
A lovely church about 7 miles from Oakham.

We visited Rutland and we were told to go and check out the sunken Church. The weather was awful, rainy and windy all day which probably hasn’t helped with my review.
The Church was nice to look at but it was not open to the public so we got to walk around the outside of it for less than 10 minutes. I would imagine if the weather was nicer it would make a nice spot for a picnic but overall a bit underwhelming.

Oakham is a delightful small market town with many interesting small shops as well as the castle, grounds and church. We stayed at The George Inn which was great. Rutland water is nearby and something there for everyone.: walks, water sports and boats, wild life and cafes.
We will go again.

I'd long wanted to see this marvel, rescued from the fate of 'drowning' under the waters of the reservoir as it was being flooded. It was saved by an action group. The structure was raised several meters and waterproofed. Sadly when we visited Rutland Water, the Church was closed for a private event, and we were not even able to walk round the exterior.
I wasn't aware of the limited opening and since my return home I have scoured the Rutland Water website and the Normanton Church website for details of opening times or at least how to find out when it is open. All I can find is a redundant line saying 'There is occasional opening only of the church when visitors can see inside this iconic landmark.'
WHY??? If it is an iconic landmark in the middle of a major attraction it should be open MUCH more and details of when or at least how to find out when published on the websites for Rutland Water and the Church.
We will come again and hope for better luck next time.

Unusual former church that sits just out into the lake with a nice little walk down from the nearby carpark.
Too many people and bikes... need to have a separate cycleway, it's not very safe as it is.

This is probably the most photogenic spot on Rutland Water and the most Romantic. You can stand here and linger for ages with the incredible view.

Car Park, Oakham LE15 8HD
The sat nav directed us through a hedge! Just get to the car park entrance and the walk down is about 150 metres.... Or you can drop off and park... The car park operates on a vehicle registration basis and is quite reasonable.
