About
Voted the UK’s Best Garden to Visit 2018/19, Barnsdale Gardens is an essential visit whether you are a gardener or not. Famed as the home of the BBC Gardeners’ World TV programme it has been dubbed ‘a theme park for gardeners’ because of its uniquely designed collection of 38 individual, yet realistic, small gardens that guide you round this 8 acre site. We have a great variety of garden areas, ranging from traditional English cottage gardens, to wildlife, Japanese and French, as well as spaces for growing vegetables and fruit. Our focus is on environmental and ecological gardening, so we garden using organic and peat-free principles. There are numerous courses and events running throughout the year, as well as our Summer Sundays taking place during July and August. Then there's our fabulous Chelsea Flower Show, Gold Medal-winning plant nursery to tempt you, while our Tea Room, serving locally sourced and freshly prepared food, is there to feed and revitalise you.

- HettyRutland, United Kingdom206 contributionsBreakfast with Santa! We booked into the breakfast with Santa morning and what a lovely experience. Taking our three year old granddaughter we all enjoyed a cooked breakfast served by the lovely lady in the elf shoes! Followed by gingerbread and cup cake decorating and a visit to receive a gift from Santa in the little grotto in the corner of the room. Lovely gift of a book, socks, sticker and gingerbread biscuits. We enjoyed all the morning.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 9, 2023

My husband uses a small travel scooter and we were concerned about the soft ground so we were able to borrow the larger wheeled scooter that was at the gardens. Made getting around very easy. We had a chat with Nick Hamilton who imparted some info for us then we spent a leisurely time going from one part of the garden to the next. Lovely time spent even with the inclement weather. Places to shelter when we needed. Back to the cafe for tea & cake. We look forward to returning later in the year so see the changes of season.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 1, 2024
- Graham WHallaton, United Kingdom96 contributionsA beautiful (and delicious) Sunday visitMy wife and I visited for several hours, being booked in for afternoon tea and entry into the gardens. The afternoon tea was fabulous. Every element was delicious, with a choice of cake and coffee or tea, along with sandwiches, sausage rolls, Eton Mess, and fruit scones with jam and clotted cream. The staff couldn't be more helpful and the surroundings are very comfortable. The gardens are spectacular. We're not particularly green fingered, but even we came away with lots of ideas for our own garden. It's a lovely, tranquil space. Heartily recommended.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 28, 2024
- Chas H8 contributionsGarden visit with afternoon teaVisited the gardens as a package with afternoon tea Firstly the gardens, I would mark them a ten, thoroughly enjoyed the various themes, the weather was good to us which added to the visit Next came the afternoon tea, we mark this very low, not up to the standard of the rest of the experience and spoilt the visit The ambiance was poor, like eating in a potting shed, ok for a snack, but not a special tea. The tables were sticky and looked stained The sandwiches were dry, the scones stuck to your mouth and gums, the cake was also dry. One of us has a chilli allergy and we were confirmed nothing had any chilli in it, I suggest the staff double check the ingredients used as there was a form of chilli in something, maybe powder (mixed spice?) as the guest had a chilli reaction on the way home, was in pain for 24 hours until it past Barnsdale, I think you need to carry on what you do well, that is show gardens and drop the cream teasVisited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024
- Julia6 contributionsA lovely day out with afternoon teaOur son bought us a gift to visit gardens with afternoon tea. We spent a lovely day exploring the many gardens, sitting in the shady nooks, as it was hot. All topped off with a lovely vegetarian afternoon tea. All the staff we met were friendly and would recommend.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 1, 2024
- Sharon M19 contributionsCompetition winnerI was lucky enough to win a competition to visit Barnsdale Gardens which included afternoon tea. The gardens are relaxing and beautifully maintained and we came away with many ideas for our own garden. The afternoon tea was wonderful ( if too much). I highly recommend this place and the surrounding areaVisited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 12, 2024

For me, visiting these gardens is paying tribute to Geoff Hamilton, who inspired me to become a Garden Designer.
His son Nick, who now runs and manages these gardens, like his father, is very passionate about conservation and wildlife and mindful of this when maintaining these inspiring gardens.
This year particularly has been difficult for many, so to be able to spend 2-4 hours in a delightful place such as this, is a real pleasure.
Now my 3rd trip, as I do not live too close to Oakham, I will certainly be coming back again as like all good gardens, they keep evolving.
With a shop and nursery, where you may purchase useful information, gifts and plants that have been used in the gardens, coffee/tea shop and cafe are open to serve food and drink during your stay there.

We were staying near Long Bennington in October and noticed months ago that they had a special 2 hour walk through the grounds with the owner Nick Hamilton, to include breakfast, so we booked it.
They were serving breakfast from 9.30 to 10.30 and it was delicious, we then all gathered outside. We were then guided through all the beautiful different gardens, explained why they were built by his late father, what was planted in them, and answered any questions we had. The gardens were featured in the TV programme "Gardener's World" to begin with. The tour was very interesting, informative and entertaining, well worth the cost. The autumn colours were stunning.

Staying nearby, we decided to visit on a bright but cold winter day. It was a pleasant hour, but inevitably a bit half-baked this time of year from a flora point of view... the entry fee wasn't discounted much from the main season, making it not great value for money, though I'm sure it is a lovely place in the summer.

We visited Barnsdale Gardens yesterday and found the experience very disapointing.
The gardens were in a sorry state, many were requiring maintenance, weeding and clearing away dead matter, etc. The grass between the gardens had not been looked after. In my garden I have not kept up with the weeding recently, but I am not charging an admision charge to mine. At £11 per person it was overpriced. We travelled up from London and if we were asked to recommend the garden we would, have to speak as we found.
On the plus side was the food, although the shed it was served in was again not of good quality, the food was ok. But they did not get our order correct. My wife ordered a sandwich and was asked if she wanted white or brown bread, she chose brown but it came up with white, when we pointed this out the waitress said we would have to wait again for it to be replaced. The correct order came out from the kitchen in a minute or two. Someone in the kitchen obviosley has an understanding of customer service. All in all a disapointing experience especially the distence we had travelled.

Received a gift voucher for a visit to the gardens and afternoon tea for two at Christmas.
Originally booked to visit in June but had to cancel then 2nd reservation also had to ve cancelled and finally got to visit on Saturday 14 August. Barnsdale were very accommodating in rearranging the day for us.
We chose a beautiful sunny and warm day to visit and although there were lots if visitors there, as you walked around the gardens it did not feel crowded. Able to potter around at our leisure.
My husband had recently had a knee replacement so had to go round slowly with plenty of stops. Each garden had seating so we were able rest up and enjoy the gardens and weather at our leisure. Barnsdale does have 2 electric chairs available if needed.
The gardens were lovely and so colourful and it was nice to see many of the plants we have in our Melton Mowbray garden.
Afternoon tea was a delight. Being a lovely day, we chose to eat in the gardens. Lots of little areas set out with each with just a few tables set out, which was a delight. The staff were smiling, helpful and really nice and the afternoon tea was a delight.
China teapot, cups, saucers and plates was so much better than being served with drinks in mugs. The afternoon tea included a selection of dainty sandwiches, glasses of Eton mess, delicate cheese cake and scones with jam and cream. A delight. Could have done with a little more jam. Too full to eat the scones so the waitress kindly brought us a cake box to take away and enjoy later.
Walked through the gift and plant shop but did not buy anything.
A delightful afternoon. Thank-you to all the staff

Fantastic gardens and staff reasonable entry fee and you become a friend of Barnsdale and go as many times a year as you like.
The cafe is incredible value I had an omelette and chips which was classed as a light lunch ( liars) it was massive. Wife had a lovely bacon buttie. You can use the cafe ( serves alcohol too) without going into the gardens. You’d be mad to not go to either or even better both. We have been 3 times and are planning to go in November can’t wait. Oh fresh local produce in the cafe some grown at the gardens.

Visited on Saturday 11th June 2022 Convoluted route to get here and the lack of signage on the way and the small car park/shop and cafe made us think there may not be much to see but as there were 38 show gardens it blew us away. The first and last stop was the tea room (also known as death by pine). No condiments still and when asked I was given 1 sachet of salt but it's only a minor gripe. After touring the gardens we returned to the tearoom and sat outside in the area adjacent/immersed in the garden which was much better. The gardens themselves are advertised as the largest set of show gardens in the country and it's not hard to believe as unlike many formal gardens these are set up as if at a major flower show like Chelsea but are permanent. The distinct nature of the gardens and diversity of planting/layout and structure blew us away. Worth many revisits.

I feel the need to balance out the previous review as we went on the same day. We too had heard that entry to the gardens was free if you bought a plant but we anticipated that things might have changed after 1 June. We used the Gardeners World 2for1 voucher but were quite happy to pay and I think it would have been well worth the full £10 entry - these places need paying customers to survive and they take a lot of upkeep. They must have been through a tough time of late but despite that the gardens were in good condition. The layout of gardens within a garden means that there is a lot to see. All of the staff were great. The tearooms were closed but did a fine takeaway cuppa. The nursery is very good. It is a pleasure to go somewhere where the focus is on the plants. A destination for gardeners, not trippers!

Cycled here from our campsite which was really easy.....had a lovely few hours walking around the gardens. Certainly got some great ideas and most plants are named for an amateur like me! Social distancing was ok but some people obviously forget that other people prefer the distancing! Cafe was lovely, food was great, you can get coffee and cake once you are in the gardens and they have placed a marquee for you to sit under. Prices for plants are a little on expensive side but very unusual.

Dogs are not allowed except that there is a full-day shaded area where dogs can be left in cars. We never leave our dog in the car and, while it may not suit others, we were perfectly happy to split up - husband & dog found somewhere close by to walk with our dog and I went round the gardens on my own.

How long would you say is needed to look round? Couple of hours, bit more?
Written June 30, 2016
I would say a couple of hours :-) Plus a visit to the tea room - afternoon tea is amazing.
