Ian, our guide, was superb. We emailed details of some of our ancestors who had fought in the war and he compiled a tour based around where they had fought and where some had died. His research was incredible, we were able to track the movements of our ancestors and discover facts of which we were unaware. He located Cemeteries and memorials at which we could pay our respects. The use of a 4x4 enabled us to actually get to the locations at which many of the key battles involving our ancestors took place, as opposed to looking at them from a distance. Importantly, Ian, as a military historian was able to explain the context in which certain battles took place and the strategies adopted. The tour was informative, exhilarating and , at times, emotional. It was a fantastic experience. We cant wait to book another tour and I would recommend "In the Footsteps" without any hesitation. The booking process was straightforward and a detailed itinerary was sent before the Trip. Because of their knowledge of the locality we received sound travel and accommodation advice. Excellent.

We had an amazing experience touring the beaches of Normandy with In the Footsteps tour company. Jo Gumm was so prompt in responding to emails as we were inquiring about setting up our trip. She had some great suggestions and helped us develop our own individualized itinerary for our trip. Our personal guide David was awesome! He was so knowledgable and had so many interesting facts to share. We learned so much about the history in these areas. David had done alot of research and shared specific details and maps about the areas we toured. Nice accomondations in the beautiful town of Bayeaux. Highly recommend!!

My grandson (18) and I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. From my first inquiry, the correspondence was quick and responsive to my questions.
Ian collected us from our London hotel and was with us until our return. Although he had made an itinerary, he was quick to adapt it to our personal interests. He made time for us to see the Bayeux Tapestry and the cathedral in Bayeux. After seeing my grandson's interest in the big guns, he took us to many sites relating to the shore defense system. His commentary was detailed, but not too detailed. Also, he was very cognizant of the food needs of an eighteen -year-old.
Because of delays with air transportation, we extended our stay an extra day but had to leave our original hotel. While we on the ferry, Jo found us the perfect room near Heathrow. That's what I call service!
If you are interested in a history tour led by a knowledgeable guide and backed by a wonderful staff, use In The Footsteps Battlefield Tours.

Robin our tour guild was amazing. He was unbelievably well prepared. We asked him to cover a lot in our two-day tour and he exceeded expectations. I would have to say our first stop at Pegasus Bridge will not be forgotten. That was one of my must-see monuments and his knowledge of the details was so colorful it put you right there. We even got coffee served to us by the owner’s daughter at Cafe Gondree. This was our first stop and the remaining memorials were just as moving. Well done Robin!

Preplanning with Jo was flawless as well. Many interesting travels a lodging tips made our entire trip a once in a lifetime experience for my dad and me.

My best advice is to really understand how passionate these historians are about their expertise. The experience with Jo and this group will leave an impression for a very long time. Take their advice in terms of planning and what is realistic in a one, two or three-day tour. They know there stuff!

We contacted In the Footsteps Battlefield Tours for a private tour from London of Bletchley Park. Jo Gumm was very helpful. Well in advance of our trip we received the name of our driver (Neda) and guide (Bob Darby). Bob contacted us by phone the day before our appointment, and he and Neda were waiting in our hotel lobby at the appointed time. The trip from London to Bletchley Park in Neda's clean and comfortable car took about 90 minutes. Bob was an excellent and knowledgeable guide who let us set our own pace going through the various buildings and exhibits at Bletchley Park. We arrived back at our hotel around 5:00 pm. This was a tour my husband has dreamed of taking for a number of years. It exceeded our expectations, thanks in large part to In the Footsteps Battlefield Tours. They deserve high marks for communications via email, text, and phone.

This customised 3-day trip out of London exploring Australian involvement in WW1 on the Western Front was an absolute highlight of our trip to Europe. Living in Australia we hear lots of stories about how and where a lost generation of young Australian men fought in France and Belgium in WW1. To see the actual locations where those battles happened and the consequences in the many war cemeteries dotted around what is now a peaceful countryside was a great privilege and very humbling, for my small, multi-generational family group.

The knowledge of our guide David was unparalleled and his personable and honest nature suited our family perfectly. He was able to adapt his responses to the different levels of interest shown by the various members of our group and went out of his way to do research that meant the sites we visited and discussions we had were relevant, interesting, informative and at times breathtakingly emotional.

The organisational support from Jo and her team in putting together the trip was first rate. Her responsiveness and willingness to delve more deeply into what we wanted to achieve on the trip were a great benefit as was her assistance in organising comfortable and appropriate transport and accommodation.

I could not recommend this company highly enough.

We arranged a four-day tour with Ian (through Jo) focusing on WWI battlefields in France. We specifically asked to see the trenches and just learn more about the history of the area. (Our son was beginning his history college studies in London and we thought this would be a great treat for him!) The tour was absolutely AMAZING! We learned so much and Ian even taught my son a bit about researching history (how important it is to realize who is writing a document to their view on what really happened at the time) which was so generous of him. I can not recommend "In the Footsteps" enough and have told multiple friends about it already. A truly unforgettable and special experience, though, certainly a bit somber (as war is).

From the moment we contacted In the Footsteps about a personalised, family trip to follow the actions of relatives lost in WW1, we knew we were in good hands. Every little detail was meticulously planned by Jo. Our guide came to meet us a few months before the trip, to explain the itinerary. Then Covid and lockdown put a hold on everything and we had to reschedule 3 times. Finally in May 2022 we had a wonderful trip, well worth the 2 year wait.
Our whole group had a great time. Travel, hotels and itinerary could not be faulted, and our Guide, David was exceptional. We were in awe of the knowledge and insight that David was able to give us, it made it all come alive - a moving and memorable experience.
It was great to have such a good guide and we really appreciated all the research that David did, which gave a real insight into the lives of those who were involved in the front line (info which you normally don't find out). So much packed into the time and very enjoyable and informative.
We would have no hesitation in recommending In the Footsteps, and we are already thinking of another tour with them.

Thank you Ruth. We are so pleased you enjoyed your tour after all this time putting it on hold. David thoroughly enjoyed it too and it's been great for us to be back organising tours again. We hope to see you again soon Jo

Truly an adventure "in the footsteps". A journey literally tracing the footsteps of Napoleon's Waterloo campaign, Edward 3's campaign to Crecy, Henry 5's trip to Azincourt, William The Conqueror's city of Caen, to Joan of Arc's final footsteps in Rouen. Extremely memorable. A well coordinated series of accommodations ranging from top hotels to well appointed B&B's along the way, with expert transportation to get there.

My brother and I asked In The Footsteps to research our Great Uncle, who served in the 12th Lancers throughout WW1 and take us to key locations in France and Belgium.
We spent a fascinating 4 days with Pete Smith visiting numerous locations and learnt a great deal.
Pete was a knowledgeable and pleasant travelling companion.

Thank you so much for your review. Pete had an excellent time on tour with you both. This, if I remember correctly, is the third time you have toured with us and we hope to see you again on another tour in the future. Many thanks again.
