Fab family teamwork for Son's 16th Birthday

We are a family of 4 who came to do the James Bond themed Escape room at 8:30pm on 14th March 2020. From the start to end Sean, our host, was brill. He had a great sense of humour, so it was a pleasure to meet him. There are three rooms to find clues, keys, objects etc and they were all laid out professionally. It was difficult to decipher some of clues, but Sean was there to help us out, without giving us the answers. Unfortunately, we didn't make it out in time but we had a fab fun hour of family teamwork who will definitely be back!!

Awesome Wizard Room

I took 4 11-year-olds to do the Wizard Room for my son's birthday and we all really enjoyed it!
It is very tricky and definitely suited to adults too, intellectually, but the kids were a bright, engaged bunch, so it wasn't beyond them, with plenty of clues.
It's a well resourced room with plenty of locks and puzzles and wizarding paraphernalia.
Best price for the area - a real bargain.
Shaun was very helpful and friendly all the way through - thank you for making it such a success for us!

This little hidden gem is such good fun. The location is a little daunting but once inside the place is great. The price reflects the small nature of these escape rooms but Shaun was amazing and very helpful. Would definitely return

Visited with family and had a great time, Shaun really helpful and made out visit flow easily. Can’t wait to do it again.
Need to sell it more as the hotel we stayed in didn’t know anything about it.

The staff were great. A bit of banter before we begun. A wizard world was what we had expected. Not as polished as London but the price reflected this. The owner is passionate about his business

Poor escape room!

I did this escape room with some friends and I’ve got to say it was extremely disappointing!

I have done other escape rooms in Birmingham and thoroughly enjoyed them however this one was no where near in the same league!

On arrival, we were a couple of minutes late and apologised for this but we were met with an extremely grumpy man who clearly didn’t want to be working.

We did the Harry Potter escape room, which was average, the clues didn’t really link up and the man who was helping us either gave us way too many clues so we didn’t have to even think, to then leaving us for 20 minutes, we can only presume he went out as we kept asking for help but didn’t get a response.

During the escape room I had water dripping on my head and the room just seemed dirty!

When our time was up we were miles off escaping, probably due to the lack of help towards the end. In other escape rooms, they tend to give you just the right amount of clues to keep you guessing but to ensure you escape or only fall short by a few minutes. We were absolutely miles off.

I definitely won’t be visiting to try the other room!

This is from a Groupon voucher (which I and, as it will become obvious later, the host advise against).

So we've (five people) done a lot of escape rooms up and down the country (40+), and we can all say we have never had such shocking customer service in our life.

Go check out the reviews on facebook, google and here and you will see some complaints about the host peppered amongst the reviews.

We don't quite understand what may have happened before, but our host was in quite a bad mood when we arrived.

To sum up quickly, our host was rude, defensive, and (i'm vaguely impressed by this) somehow hostile in every sentence from our arrival to our exit.

Okay, onto the review.

We got there, we were let in. Unfortunately we were a few minutes late, but he didn't mention it. Fine so far. My brother asked to use the toilet. The toilet was not operational, we were told. Again, fine. We said that that was a shame as we'd been driving a while. We weren't angry about it, but, strangely, our host was.

"Well what do you want me to do about it?" He fired back.

Okay, awkward, but we moved on.

He asked about the Groupon code, we passed it on, and he asked for an extra ten quid. We wondered why, and outta nowhere he went onto a rant about how he doesn't understand why people book through Groupon as they end up paying more, and eventually got to the point that there's a part in the fine print about surcharges for the weekend. A shame we missed that, but fine, so we immediately procured the extra ten.

But our host wasn't finished. He complained that we'd leave a 1 star review because of this and there was "no point". We don't know what he meant by this, i'd like to stress that this hiccup is not why this review is poor.

No, what really got us is that he told us that we could "take our voucher and go home". Again, we were completely fine with paying, we had the money ready for him, we had not properly challenged anything he had said, but our host was on a war path and acted as though we were forcing him into a corner demanding our money back.

Naturally we had no desire to leave because we'd already paid the bulk pf it and had travelled a while to get here.

In the middle of the rant he brought up that we were late, and managed to work this into his excuse about the toilet not working and our refusal to pay the extra ten (my mother had the ten in her hand, ready, as he said that). Okay, we were a few minutes late. It was because of the distance we have to travel, as well as our difficulties in finding the room. He was understandably miffed that we were late, but I am baffled by the level of his unprofessional rage at this.

We have been a little late to other rooms, and every single one of them has been understanding, and, above all, calm and rational about it. We apologise, and they move on because, Hell, they plan ahead and tend to have a clemency of fifteen minutes for lateness. Often, things happen, traffic happens, life happens, people are late and these other room hosts understand that. I empathise that it's frustrating for the host, but his decision to take it as some personal slight and hold it against us was ridiculous.

Moving on, we paid the ten, put our stuff away, and were willing to awkwardly move past being ranted at.

As we were about to begin, he blasted through a quick run down of the rules, and told us that the room probably "isn't going to go well". What did he mean by this? I have no clue. But if he was keen to get us out of the way because of time, perhaps he should not have scolded us for a few minutes.

Anyway, onto the room. We did the A Wizard's World room, and it was... fine. Mediocre. Challenging for certain, but unoriginal. The room is dark, possibly to cover for the lack of scenery and atmosphere. It also possibly steps on some Harry Potter copyright toes, but that's another matter. If you're planning to do this room, we hope you enjoy number codes because you'll be doing a lot of those. The host gave clues and directions which were helpful and concise. Yeah, that part was... fine.

We escaped, and the host continued to be in a bad mood. I expected that he'd ecstatic as it's our time to leave. We mentioned that a few of torches he'd provided (the host discourages mobile phones, so no phone torches) were running a little bit low and were dimming or ceasing to work.

"They were working yesterday!".

Glad to hear it, Sean.

He offered a victory photo, we declined, and left as fast as we could.

TL;DR

Rude, easily offended host and an 'alright' room.
