Quintessential British Country Pub
Oct 2021
If you haven't visited this pub, you're missing out! My wife and I were staying nearby and came to the Blinking Owl for dinner, and what a treat it was! David, the landlord, have us a lovely greeting and was an excellent host, sharing jokes and stories from his 38 years running the pub with his wife, Sylvia.

There was an excellent selection of real ales on tap (I went for the Cumberland ale 👌🏻) while my wife had a soft drink, of which there was also a wide selection.

We had dinner the restaurant end of the pub, served by Sylvia. There were the usual pub classics (fish n chips, steaks, scampi, pies, chilli con carne, salads - you get the idea). I asked for the ribeye and my wife had bolognese. I didn't really have room for dessert but I went for some strudel with custard anyway and ate the lot 😆 Everything was perfectly cooked and presented.

The pub itself is one of the most quintessentially classic British pubs I've ever seen. Imagine the way pubs were in the 70s & 80s, and you're pretty much there (minus smoking and darts). The photos will paint a far better picture than I can.

All in all a very enjoyable and entertaining evening and I hugely recommend the Blinking Owl. Next time we're in the area, we will be back!

By the way, they do take cards payments.

Blinking Brilliant!
Aug 2021 • Friends
We stayed at the beautiful holiday cottage just opposite the pub (Forget me not cottage) and booked into the Blinking Owl each night of our stay. Sylvia and Dave were so lovely and made us and our three dogs very welcome. The pub is beautifully decorated with traditional features and the home cooked food was delicious! We will definitely be back. Thank you xx

Saturday Lunch for Group
Sep 2019
Saturday sandwich and chips lunch for 20 motorcycling Rotarians was excellent and good value. But if you go to pub check opening hours before you go.

Being open as per the advertised opening hours would be a good start

What's the point of a pub that never seems to be open dispite claiming they are open. Been here 3 times now and each time it's claiming to be open its shut so won't bother again, why have a pub and not be trueful with its opening hours. They obviously don't need the income and one would question just how often they sell beer and how fresh it is considering how infrequently they are open. Would think the best idea is convert it to a B&B or sell up to someone who actually wants to run a pub that opens

Great, well kept traditional pub

We've recently moved into the village and one of the first priorities was to visit our local pub, The Blinkin' Owl. We were given a warm welcome from Dave (the Landlord) and the lovely Sylvia. We have eaten there quite a few times now, Friday & Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch. Last Friday we were part of a group of 8 friends, 3 of whom ordered steak. They requested rare, medium rare and well done. All 3 friends said their steaks were delicious and cooked just as they liked it! We also pre-booked for Sunday lunch and 12 of us enjoyed good food and a relaxed afternoon. There was no hurrying us to the table nor encouraging us to leave so they could lock up. It's a small kitchen with Sylvia in charge. If you want fine dining this is not the place for you but if you want good food in a dog friendly, traditional pub, then try it. We love it and will continue to take ourselves and our friends there.

A real village pub

Stopped off during a walk on a cold sunday afternoon. Huge fire in the grate, friendly, chatty welcome from the landlord, good beer and some conversation with other customers. Only had a sandwich and some crisps as we were eating later. The sandwich was ok but the pub was excellent. Would happily go back and certainly recommend it to others.

What all country pubs should be like
Aug 2017 • Friends
I was visiting some friends from the US who were over for a few weeks staying in North Newington and we met in the pub for lunch. Its a typical country pub and i was amazed how friendly both the bartender (possibly the owner) and the locals were - they really made you feel welcome.
We only had a bar snack but that was very tasty (chips were lovely) and decent portions as well.
Not alot else to say really but would highly recommend it if you're passing through the area (Banbury) and would take a small diversion off the M40 to visit again. One tip if you have very small children bring your own highchair although we made do,
Highly recommended.
