About
Welcome to Banbury Museum! We are a family friendly museum located in Banbury’s town centre, next to the idyllic canal side. The Civil War, plush manufacturing, the Victorian market town, costume from the 17th century to the present day, Tooley’s Boatyard and the Oxford Canal, are just some of the stories illustrated in the museum. There are also regularly changing exhibitions and activities to ensure that there is always something new to see and do

Visited the museum many a time, such a lovely experience. We really enjoy visiting as a family , keeps the children occupied and never gets boring which is excellent.

A great place to visit in the heart of Banbury - and shop at the same time
Dec 2019
A great Young Turner exhibition on at the moment which is a must visit when in Banbury. Lots of activits for the family coming up in the Christmas holiday, a very nice shop with different things to buy and a vegan cafe which is certainly worth a try

Banbury Museum

An excellent and well curated local museum with various changing special exhibitions. Located within the Castle Quay shopping centre and alongside the Oxford canal (Tooley's boatyard) which has been attractively developed. Only a 10 minute walk from the station if travelling by train. The café, which overlooks the canal, is well worth a visit and has a range of gluten free and vegan food.

Exhibitions expensive for what you get.
Oct 2019
I live local and when it opened all exhibitions were free to enter, they now charge for all exhibitions. Some I know are free in other museums and in the past they have charged for exhibitions that I know were free to hire.

Really Interesting
Jul 2019
This is a really interesting free museum about Banbury of old and the canal. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are interested in history of the area. It is well laid out and easy to read and there are a few things for children to get stuck into. We will definitely visit again when we return to Banbury.

Interesting for a small museum
Jul 2019 • Couples
A free museum situated in the main shopping centre and overlooking the canal. Quite informative and easy to read for children and adults alike. Well laid out and several chairs to sit on in the entrance to watch the narrow boats pass by under the walkway.
Worth a visit to learn some of Banburys history. There is a cafe (although this was closed when we were there) a souvenir shop and also a referance library. From time to time there are extra displays and exhibits that incur a small cost.

First impression
Jun 2019 • Couples
First impression of Banbury - well as we entered via the canal we were greeted with an acrid stench of recreational drugs for quite a distance once past the marina - couples obviously high and drunk arguing in the street and tramps hovering about needless to say we didn’t stop as we felt unsafe

Kids didn’t want to leave
Jun 2019 • Family
My kids spent a few hours here a few weeks back. They absolutely loved it and didn’t want to leave. Got involved in all Sorts of interactive tasks and came away with some really cool paper plate art!!

They loved it and can’t wait to visit again.

Sadly my eldest left his favourite toy, Toffee the dog at the museum. But when I called the museum they quickly located and posted Toffee to us!!! Was really kind of the staff there who are running a fantastic little attraction in a lovely Oxfordshire town

Superb Local Museum
May 2019 • Friends
Worth finding within a shopping centre and adjacent to the canal. Free entry, it has a good mix of exhibits; reading; photographs; audio visual stands and hands on models to try.
Excellent use of an hour - if anything it needs better signage / publicity
