First time at the Rye Hill GC
Oct 2021 • Friends
The course was challenging and long for average golfers such as us. Although the course had hosted a tour event in the past, it was not at that level now. The fairways had cut grass laying across it and bunkers had growth of weeds that needs addressing. Staff were welcoming but the bar closed early and only bottles from the pro shop were available from 6pm onwards. We decided to go to our hotel instead in Banbury. Direction to tee boxes was almost non existent and this can be easily addressed. Distance markers certainly require better visibility to help those who have never played here before. This course can certainly be first class with more attention to detail.

Lovely views, wide fairways, woolly greens.

Nothing to add to the title of my review. The course is not a test of golf but perfect for long handicappers.

Good once, but now in poor condition
Aug 2021
Being a former member I was keen to see how the golf course had developed. I was very disappointed. The fairways, although well cut, were covered with weeds. The greens, which used to be the real standout feature of Rye Hill, were mottled and covered in pitch marks. The bunkers were unraked. The 17th tee box was a disgrace, with hardly a blade of grass on it. The bunker to right of the green was just abandoned. The whole course felt rundown. Certainly not worth a £25 green fee. Avoid.
I will never play there again.

VERY POOR....

I was very disappointed with Rye Hill golf club. Very disappointed with the attitude of the pro shop staff today. The course was extremely busy which is good but there was no one Marshalling the flow of players. After playing 13 holes which took FIVE hours I gave up and complained at the pro shop but the attitude was so what, I remember when Rye Hill was a premium course but has gone down hill and can be now classed as a council course all about the money and not the players and staff..

Rye Hill Golf Course
Aug 2019
Rye Hill is blessed with well drained soil so plays main greens all year. The course is a good golfing challenge with a mixture of holes and play continues at a decent pace so is not blighted by the incredibly slow play that many other courses in the area suffer from. The greens are generally good throughout the year.

A long golf course lacking in imagination and, after this summer, with poor green conditions.
Sep 2018
Rye Hill is a long golf course, set on a hillside outside Banbury. To my mind the course layout lacked imagination. The course has lots of long, fairly straight holes which are aligned on a north-west to south-west direction, ie in to or with the prevailing wind. Very few holes which would expect the golfer to cater for side winds. This provides a set of holes which are broadly similar. I didn’t find much of the course to be pretty (excepting 7, 14, 15 and 16).

The greens look to have suffered severely from the hot summer and were not in a good condition. In addition at 6,600 yards the yellow tees are too long for average recreational golfers.

In conclusion, if you want a nice course on the downs above Banbury I would suggest going next door to Tadmarton Heath.

Interesting challenging course

This is a properly designed course that offers experienced golfers a variety of interesting holes without being too punishing for higher handicapped players. A variety of terrain with greens in excellent condition. Not much activity in the club house but the facilities and changing rooms are good.

This is a attractive golf course in lovely countryside. Very friendly staff. The bar snacks are a bit limited in choice but reasonable value.

Friendly club with forgiving course

Played the course on 29/7/17. Very welcoming pro in the shop who brought forward our tee time with no issue at all so we could avoid the rain. Course is fairly open and offers opportunities for good scoring, especially on first 9 holes. Bit of walking between tees as course is split into sections but not excessive. Fairways needed to be cut, greens were smooth and true with allot of downhill putts if out of position. Liked holes 11, 12 and 13 which were in their own little loop. Good value and would recommend.

Good choice for a day out, give it a go

Over the last 20 years or so, my brother and I have played many courses equi-distant between Leicestershire and Buckinghamshire. Courses like Staverton, Adderbury, Whittlebury, Hellidon Lakes. This was our first visit to Rye Hill, but it will not be our last.
The day after the heatwave was quite cool at 10AM, the course is quite exposed, so needed a jumper.
The layout is varied and challenging, with several memorable holes. Fairways generally pretty wide, they need to be as the rough is punitive. Maybe there needs to be some cutting back to create more semi-rough. Fairways and greens in good condition, looks like clover patches had been treated.
The course seems quite remote, but this ensures great rural views with hardly a building or vehicle in sight.
A couple of holes have a tree in the middle of the fairway at about 150 yards. If you've played the first at Staverton, you'll know what I mean. I find golf difficult enough without such obstructions !!
Disappointing that there were so few people on the course and in the clubhouse.
Rye Hill is certainly worth a visit, it deserves to be busier.
