Historical church
Apr 2018 • Couples
Next door to Broughton Castle and containing family tombs this is an atmospheric, historic church and well worth a visit. There are information cards about the tombs. Also wall paintings and interesting lamps. Lovely flowers when we visited.

Nice Church

If you are in Broughton then a look at this church is worth your time, it is large in size and inside it is well kept and welcoming. Has lots of local history especially connected to the local castle/manor.

Beautiful church!

We use St Mary's occasionally - As well as being a lovely, quiet place of worship, it's a wonderful space for school /charity/ other concerts & performances. The down side is you are not allowed to take photos - even with the flash OFF...I can only imagine this is for copyright or fabric protection issues. The decoration is gorgeous - a period piece well worth preserving!

Lovely village and family church
Jun 2017 • Couples
Visited as part of a visit to nearby Broughton Castle, both locations being an integral part of a family history stretching all the way back to the early 1300s. Nothing exceptional about the exterior, but inside there are reminders of the Fiennes and Wyckeham family wherever you look, plus some gorgeous partial frescoes. Some fascinating tombs and wall plaques. Interesting ancient tomb stone carvings in the graveyard, although time has erased most of the details of those buried there. Plenty of parking space alongside the church. Very well worth a visit.

This is rural but close to Broughton Castle, very easy parking and worth combining a visit with one to the Castle ( where refreshments are available). A well maintained Church, in regular use for worship.

This church and Broughton Castle are closely connected and worth visiting together for a sense of the history of the Fiennes family and the local community.

Just lovely and quaint
Sep 2016 • Couples
As with many local parish village churches, they are steeped in history, and am amazed the still survive in this day and age.
Standing from the 13th century, built for the Broughton family, who were living at the castle at that time before their line died out...
Although, not religious, still love old churches like this, and their history. So if visiting the local castle, pop in...

Fine parish church dating from C14th ; lovely wall paintings
May 2016 • Couples
Largely built in the C13th for John de Broughton at the same time as his impressive house / castle, this beautiful Parish church (St Mary's) has a great deal to see, and admire.
Ineviatably there are numerous monuments to the owners of Broughton Castle, some are very impressive, such as the 14th century knights, others mostly related to the Fiennes family.
Much of the church was spared the destruction of the Civil war, and radical thinking of the Puritans. It only survived the rampant enthusiasium of the Victorian due to the celebrated architect Sir Gilbert Scott being closely working on the Castle.
My favourite parts are the remains of the wall painting - some dated to the mid 1300's, and include , but bearly recognizable, is the medieval "DOOM" mural - a strong pictorial warning to those who transgressed.
This is a place to visit in its own right, and a splendid functional parish church.
