Really enjoyed walking here from Chepstow

Really enjoyed walking here from Chepstow although limited views of the river due to the dense greenery.

Stunning, steep ancient woodland.

Clinging to the side of the Wye valley the steep woods of Lancaut are a great place to walk. Well marked paths lead down from a few parking places on Lancaut Lane to an ancient ruined church on the banks of the river. Hawks, kestrels and even Ravens can be seen. Well worth the steep climb back up.

Amazing Walk and views.
Jun 2021
we downloaded a walk from the internet . Started by parking in Chepstow where none of the contactless payment machines were working. Found enough change after using all machines for card payment and getting void tickets.
Followed map and that was a mistake as it states to ignore the signs and use open access land, You cannot do this as where it states climb over gate/go through stile it has now been blocked off.
We went back to the tourist information centre obtained a free new map and followed the Oofa Dyke path.
It is an amazing walk and the church is a stunning place to visit. The map and everything we have seen online state that the lower path back is closed, it is not. Its passable and the boulders are quite large however I would not want to do it when wet of icy. By following the lower path back it make a nearly circular walk. On the lower path follow the red arrows as this is the correct route.
Parking is cheap in Chepstow, Plenty of coffee shops to get your coffee or cake reward on the way back to the car. Castle looks amazing next to the river as well as the England Wales border on the bridge/

This is quite an arduous walk down from the road so take your time. There are ancient forests and riverbank tracks. We saw deer in the fields. The 1000 year old chapel is peaceful and interesting with 17th centre gravestones. It is a great place for your picnic.

Beautiful place for a hike
Jul 2020
Beautiful place to spend a few hours or entire day. Some parts of the trails are quite steep, but worth the effort. The car park on Lancaut Lane was full the day I was there, though I didn't actually see any other people in the 2 hours I was there.

A fun challenge
Mar 2020
What a fabulous walk, I parked near chepstow castle walked past tutshull tower and down in to the nature reserve. This walk in the nature reserve can be greatly fun and challenging in some places from some steep slopes to climbing over a rock scree, this walk is terrifically fun if you are up for a bit of a challenge. From the nature reserve, past the church of st james follow the road to wintours leap. A fantastic viewing point for the river wye and the wye valley, and theres rock climbing there.

Such a lovely place we walked from chepstow all the way along the side of the river down to Lancaut Chapel and the old leper colony which has been cleared of scrub and looks amazing.
Loads of wild flowers birds of prey flying around and there was a pair of seals in the river
Amazingly beautiful walk

Forest walk to view medieval site.
Jul 2019
Superb walk in a beautiful forest beginning from top of the quarry down to Severn estuary. Stunning scenery and peaceful walk. Tracks were all dry but would need to take care if wet and muddy. Climb back up could be demanding and some people may need to consider this before embarking down to the estuary. Old church and medieval site was fascinating and a great focal point for photographs. Would love to visit again.

Beautiful,historic local landmark.

The Lancaut nature reserve is a great place to visit for all nature lovers. Not so good for those with mobility issues as it is quite steep.Follow the river along to Chepstow,or climb up the cliffs and follow the path overlooking Horseshoe bend and the famous Wintours leap. The cliffs here are very popular with climbers in the summer months. There used to be a heronry down next to the river with about 40 herons there.A wonderful sight if you were lucky enough to catch sight of them. The old church next to the river has so much history and had one of the oldest fonts in the country there.A beautiful place to sit and take in the ambience and surrounding nature.A local gem, well worth a visit.

A bit of a trek down to the old church by the river, but worth the effort. Good views along the Wye.
