I was told that this pub offered a warm welcome and that their beers were great, which certainly wasn';t true on my visit. Staff poor, beer worse. Will not go again.

Went here with a group of old university friends and was bitterly disappointed. This pub wasn't there when we were students in West Yorkshire but we called in after reading the positive reviews. Oh how we wish that we hadn't bothered! The beer is served southern style, aka flat. The bar staff look like they would be more at home in Camden (scruffy but trendy beards, tight jeans, etc) I complained about the flat beer to a very rude, arrogant member of staff and he refused to exchange it Avoid The Grove and stick to the older real ale outlet; one of them even has a famous cat!

The barman was rude, arrogant and made me feel uncomfortable about being there. Not a welcoming experience.

Was a little bit like a kid in a sweet shop when I went here. The amount of beer on offer is truly amazing.

I love Gin!!! And this place has lots!
For beer lovers this place is even better, they have a huge choice of beer. It is next to Huddersfield climbing wall so climbers get a discount. What more do people want. The walls are covered with crazy art work they have loads of unusual snacks. This place is awesome. Come here!!!!!

From the outside it looks like your generic old man's pub, but do not dismiss it! Upon entering you have the choice of heading into the tap room, a cozier area with a number of seats, usually 10 specially selected hand pumps available with a chalkboard on the wall describing the beers they have.

Or you can go left into the lounge, a much larger room decorated with all sorts of crazy taxidermist animals and nude portraits attached to the walls and ceiling. Again, they have a selection of hand pumps on offer usually fetching the likes of Thornbridge Jaipur, Magic Rock Ringmaster, Buxton Spa, Gadd's No.7 and Mallinsons Beelzebub's Tears to name a few, but everything is always on point so you could pick out of a hat and it'll still be good. Additionally, you can select from a range of ciders, lagers, bottled beers and spirits if you're not into your real ale, notably they also offer a whiskey of they moment every day that often reaches into the high 50% ABV and tastes great.

On a warm day you can always head on out into their beer garden and sit at one of the tables provided, have smoke in their designated smoking area or just chill on the grass to the end of the garden.

Additionally, the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, ask them if you're bewildered by the selection on offer. I frequent the place alot and have always been able to get speaking to people as the clientele are usually very friendly, plus a fair few of them are CAMRA members so I often get their advice on what beers to try too.

I can't say enough about the place! Brilliant pub, excellent standards of beer, a bit quirky, friendly staff and customers, hosts varied music nights for free (folk/jazz/bluegrass etc...), a significant drinks selection and even hosts the world's strongest ale (Brewdog - Sink The Bismarck!), offers discount for CAMRA members and you can buy beer to take out in 4 & 8 pint flagons.

If you're ever in Huddersfield I thoroughly recommend visiting, also buy me beer if you see me!

A visit to Huddersfield isn't complete without visiting the Grove! It is, quite possibly, the best pub in Yorkshire, maybe even in the UK. Value for money is very good, prices generally range from £2.50 per pint for weaker pale ales up to £5 per pint for the stronger, rarer stuff. quality is second to none! Not once had a poorly kept pint here. However, it is worth telling the very knowledgeable bar staff if you aren't sure what to order, they will be able to find an ale just to your taste, there are some unusual beer styles here and the selection of bottled beers & spirits is ridiculously good!

The atmosphere is cracking. The place is full of good people enjoying good beer and good conversation. There is a great little beer garden to the rear, which on summer afternoons is a fantastic sun trap.

A truly brilliant pub!

First time at the Grove and was disappointed with the way one of the staff treated us.
I was playing my friends part of a track on my phone, when a member staff came over and said something like we don't have a PRS license so can you switch your phone off.He was most impolite and walking away from us as he spoke. I called him back and asked him to explain why there was a guitarist in one of the other bars playing publically if they didn't have a PRS license. He said they didn't need one for that. What nonsense. So all in all spoilt my first visit to this pub, and won't be going again which is a shame as the beer was good.

Called into the pub yesterday with 5 other CAMRA members as part of festive beer survey
Good choice of beer and was fairy busy
The experience was ruined by terrible service and staff who had no idea as to how to pull a pint which is a basic skill you would think
All our beer served had no head and went flat in minutes of drinking it
When I suggested that a sparkler might be the answer I was told “ what’s that”
Better pubs in the town that know how to look after the beer

The Grove is a strange one. The selection, range and quality of the beer is as good as you'll find anywhere. The prices are very reasonable. Full marks all round there.

But as a pub, I'm less convinced. Don't expect a warm welcome and a cosy chat with the landlord; unusually for pubs in this part of the world, that won't happen. You'll be served with a minimum of ceremony and that's it. The decor is quirky, although there's been some work done improving things in recent months.

There are much better, more welcoming pubs around Huddersfield town centre serving equally excellent beer (Sportsman, Corner, Kings Head, Rat & Ratchet, Star etc). The Grove only attracts because of it's fantastic range.
