My husband and I ate here twice when we were in newbury for 5 days! The atmosphere is charming. The staff were friendly but the food was fantastic! My husband got the beef pie and I got one with chicken . They were beyond delicious. The second time we also got a tray of small bites and , wow, I was really happy with the quality of the food.
You can’t beat the price.

We are new to the area and stumbled across The Catherine Wheel by accident. What a great pub, good ambience, lovely staff, and friendly atmosphere. There was a slight communication problem which was sorted out very well by the manager, who doesn't stay in the background but mingles with all the clientele. We will return, I suspect many times. Thankyou for a great evening.

The standard of housekeeping in this establishment is appalling! Without fail on every visit there are dirty glasses on the bar, tables look like they have never been cleaned. It's a shame as the idea of this pub is great - real ales, excellent Tutts Clump cider and appetising pies. The staff, whilst always pleasant and welcoming need a kick up the backside or some basic hygiene training at least. I'm often tempted to try the food here but am always put off by the grubbiness of the place. If there is no effort made to clean the areas visible to the public I dread to think what behind the scenes is like! Come on Catherine Wheel pull your finger out and put some effort into keeping the bar area clean and wipe those tables over once in a while. I'm sure you get more repeat business.

We went for dinner following the star rating online and were very disappointed. I guess their thing is meat pies. Service was slow and they didn't have the pie I wanted. They do offer an all you can eat bar that has veggies and some other things on there, but we wouldn't go back for food. I guess they have a lot of beers to choose from.

How many different gins can one place have? Amazing gin bar....great guy out there serving and advising on gin. Rhubarb and custard gin was to die for. The gin bar is outside in their covered courtyard. Great buzzy bar, whole mix of age ranges. The new landlords have really turned this place around and turned it into a great little gem of a pub/bar.
If you love gin you must visit.

Good to see craft beers and a good selection of real ales and ciders in central Newbury.
The revamp has been done well and the interior feels warm and inviting.
There is an outside courtyard with television and heaters for the colder months.
Prices are reasonable and there are also numerous pies available.

If you don't like real ale, real cider or pies then stay away from this pub. If you do like real ale, real cider and pieminster pies then this is paradise for you. The Catherine Wheel knows what its offering is to customers and does it all very well. More beers than you can imagine, friendly bar staff, good cooked filling and well priced pies and a lovely atmosphere to spend an evening or afternoon. A great pub!

The Catherine Wheel has had a bad reputation for as long as I've lived in Newbury, so when I saw it was being refurbished I didn't set my expectations too high. However we popped in recently and were surprised to find that this is now what I would consider Newbury's best kept secret. There were too many craft ales available to count: They had a large number on tap as well as tonnes of bottles of beers from all over.

The atmosphere inside is fairly typical of a modern craft pub. It was clean, bright and airy with a pseudo-rustic feel. The punters were all fairly typical of this sort of pub too, mostly a younger professional crowd (20s-30s) and there to have a nice relaxing drink, not to get drunk. It was busy, but not so much that it felt crowded.

The woman behind the bar was a little stretched when we visited. I don't know if she is new, or whether they were short staffed that night, but she was clearly struggling to keep up with demand. However she did a great job regardless and we were never kept waiting.

The Catherine Wheel serves Pieminister pies as well as serving beer, but we did not try these as we'd just had a meal, and I doubt they'd cater to my particular dietary requirements anyway. However for those who like pie this establishment would be a fantastic choice.

For an incredible selection of fantastic beer and a nice atmosphere this is the only place in Newbury to go to.

Just popped in for a quick drink. Unfortunately no non alcoholic cider or lager for my wife, (though the barman did search), bless her, she was happy to wait for me to finish my ale. Nice clean pub with nice toilets.
