    Hennessy Restaurant
I've been in the Hennessy restaurant a number of times over the years and have always loved going. The course gave the restaurant a complete makeover, I believe earlier this year at a cost of around £1.5m. The improvement is staggering, simply brilliant. I went this last Friday, the 22nd of September 2023, along with 5 family members. It was a treat for my daughter's 40th birthday. The good points:- Our waiter on table 40 was Lee, he was as good as any waiter in a michelin star restaurant, simply brilliant. The views over the course are even better than before. Service from start to finish was terrific. Tote betting service at the table was very good. The bad points:- Food was near cold, with too few options. A choice of 3 starters and 3 mains isn't enough. The 4 mains on the menu were mushroom, kedgeree, duck breast or sirloin steak, a very average selection. All portions were small. The air conditioning was set at far too low a temperature, all of us were cold (our ages ranged from 11 to 71 years) and despite our request to increase the temperature, half an hour later it was cold again. This repeated throughout the afternoon. Our booking confirmation letter stated that there was champagne on arrival, which was actually sparkling wine, plus canopes which turned out to be very small and only 2 per person. After lunch petit fours never arrived. I do hope the management can sort these problems out as a day at the races in the Hennessy has always been a real treat for my wife and I.

I go to the members on the ground floor and the food offering is fab but COLD- every time we have eaten- when asked for it to be heated we are told it is not possible as there is no microwave!!! I am sure you are not supposed to sell a roast lunch COLD!! 🥶 maybe the members need to make a collection to buy a microwave!!! Such a disappointment!!

Have been many times to this place as we have had horses running and this year the Henessay is poor poor value for money. The food is absolutely awful, the last few times I’ve had the Partridge which comes as a dry solid couple of blocks on a plate over cooked beyond belief. Stupidly this time my wife asked for the fish and for it to be lightly cooked, it came as dry as cotton wool so had another starter instead but these are fairly tasteless anyway. The bread rolls are dangerous weapons again bought in blocks of solid dough. The restaurant managers are excellent but what can they do but apologise. Having had an email reply from the food and beverage manager it’s obvious he’s never eaten there, so what you served 200 people but I’m not interested in other people (others around us were not that happy either) Ascot on 5 and Equus at Sandown can also do this but to a much higher standard at the same price. At £122.00 a head you can eat at both Michelin Star restaurants in Newbury for less than this. Once the corporates on a jolly day out get bored there may be a problem with filling tables during the week. The view is excellent but if your a two you end up in the window which on a sunny day is like a sauna the ac works well but goes on and off as the tables further back probably get cold. It’s a nice course but this was so much better the other year.

Having been to Newbury Racecourse a few times before over the years I once again fell into the trap of thinking this time must be better. But no. It was worse.
We booked premier grandstand tickets for a friends birthday bash. After paying for the tickets we where informed the upper seated area in the warm was closed for decoration. How many weeks do they have between race days for this work to be done? This is a poor excuse for a lack of staff, after they have your payment.
So on arrival you are penned into the lower grandstand seating area to que for drinks etc. This is there idea of social distancing?
We spent more time waiting than we did drinking. I walked away from the bar twice.
The average age of bar staff could not be more than 18 so experience and training had to be minimal. Management was non existent due to the bad feed back from customers.
The last straw was the £1 charge for a refillable glass/cup which they obviously knew some people would not return and so making that much more profit.
Newbury is a classic example of profit based share holding companies that put money before customer care. They print there customer valued garbage with no backup.
So our party walked away thoroughly cheesed of and will be going elsewhere to be entertained.

To sum up Newbury Racecourse you are a disgrace.

Could not agree more with the Reviews and if the weather is the same for Olly Murs, I would think about actually attending if you have not purchased a ticket yet.

The weather is what it is, if it had been a beautiful sunny day, it would have been better, however, it was pouring down and even having premier tickets the bars were cold, floor soaking wet, the Grandstand area downstairs they were lucky nobody slipped and fell. The beer - come on Newbury, the choice you have now changed to is is awful, lager awful, cider awful, doombar for bitter and so expensive for £6.50 in a carton container that you get a take away coffee, you cannot see anything, our beer was all froth, the bar staff could not see what they were filling and you needed to purchase more than you wanted. Tom Jones, a little disappointment, a true legend, but for only 1 hour, music not great quality, thankfully his voice is still amazing when you could hear it. The security staff, what were they doing there?! The screen display clearly indicated NO UMBRELLAS, the weather terrible, but to ask a security person to ask people to put them down, they refused and a reply "we have asked, the weather is so bad, what can we do" rubbish, what are you there for? Drunks, you will always get drunks, but again Security why have them if they cannot carry out their duties they are paid for.

Unfortunately that will be my last time at Newbury and we are local. If you read this and it is pouring down for Olly, I would think again, but that is only my opinion.

I don’t ever recall such a poor experience at a bar. It needed twice as many staff, I had to get a mate to put a bet on for me, there wasn’t time to bet and buy a round.
20 minutes was the norm. One person serving 2 queues. And they were so slow and overwhelmed, probably due to being treated so poorly by any obviously visible management. It was a common topic of discussion amongst many racegoers, many many people were hacked off and complaining.

Newbury racecourse - wake up and do the maths! We calculated easily another 2k per hour just for adequately staffing your bar.

More revenue for you
Staff morale will improve, less stressful, less abuse from customers
Better customer experience, less negative feedback to customer’s network, most of which you won’t hear about
Greater likelihood of repeat business

I suspect that with the high prices, you don’t care…..about your staff or the really poor customer experience.

I can only imagine how much worse it would have been had the rail strike not prevented so many more people.

For Heavens sake, employ some management with a business head.
High prices and paper cups are one thing; a wait so long it prevents you from putting a bet on, quite another.

BTW, after one of the regular 20 minute waits queueing for 3 beers, I was told I was the last one, your staff member was going on a break! Brilliant for the people waiting behind me.

Woeful!

Went with my usual mate to the 31st December meeting.

We drove and we’re directed to the opposite side of our entrance so had to walk 15 mins round to the other side in the rain which wasn’t ideal.

Brought a ticket which was card only which was no problem for me but I just cannot understand racings new attempt to alianate customers. Cash and racing goes in hand in hand, baffles me as we all know it’s just about cost and not improving race goer experience. £30 is to get in is ok but if it was anymore then that i wouldn’t have gone, would have gone to Cheltenham tomors instead.

The facilities and drink options were pretty good to be fair although I didn’t actually eat or drink anything.

Went out for the first race and there was no commentary and as it was raining so hard no one had any idea what was going on until the end. Although the commentary worked after you couldn’t hear it, many people were using betting apps for the commentary. This needs improving. Meant to be a grade 1 race course, better at Fontwell.

The racing was really good and had some really good field sizes which was most welcome. Had a few winners so made for a nice day. The premier side opened up for the last race so we went in there which was a nice end to the day. Had to then walk through the mud to the other side of the course to get our car (We asked for directions)

In conclusion had a really nice day despite the appalling weather but can only give 3 stars as the lack of any commentary you could hear made the day difficult during racing.

A celebratory birthday visit for their Festive race day marred by poor service, 'technical hitches' and their response to the feedback - "come back and we'll look after you" - no thanks!

Reading their blurb after booking the "Hennessy Restaurant Full Package" you'd be forgiven for expecting a quality service and experience. That may well be the case if you're a party ordering champagne, beers, spirits etc. they couldn't be more attentive, if you happen to be following their advice to travel by private transport and avoid public transport so aren't drinking, forget about it just as they'll forget about you!

Poor service, no or little commentary on the races due to "technical difficulties" and suspect COVID 19 discipline from staff around the entry/exit pathways.

Apparently it will be better if we book again, don't think I'll be finding out.

No issues with the racing, the bookmakers, or the horses, that's all fantastic.
Have attended the old Hennessey meeting for many years.

My issues are with Newbury racecourse and the decisions they have made which make the entire day less enjoyable for the punter.
1. You pay £6.50 for horrible tasting beer, served in a paper cup. How about going back to using plastic cups.
2. The bar is cashless, yet we had a massive delay at the bar because the electronic till was giving errors. A senseless decision seeing as everyone attending has plenty of cash on them. Just accept cash at the bars.
3. The bar staff have no idea how to run even a quiet bar, no idea how to serve beer.
4. Upon arrival, your first interaction with the racecourse might be a totally unnecessary and insulting drugs search in a tent beside the gate, my friend had to explain that the dust behind his phone case was not drugs. Ridiculous that you chose to do that.

We have been to Newbury races for several years now.
The organisation and facilities are superb and the viewing areas excellent. There is a great range of food and drink and everything is laid out well.Parking is close at hand and the train station is very convenient if you are using public transport.
Also the admission fees are very reasonable particularly if you book the early bird prices.
The racing is of the highest quality with support from all the top trainers.
This is probably one of the best courses in the country and the management of the events is second to none.
Having been to Cheltenham for several years that experience is terrible and compared to Newbury they set the standard for how a racecourse should be run absolutely professional and not a rip off or money making machine.

Yearly event to the races. The Hennessy package was well worth it and everything well organised and staff brilliant. Lucky with the weather so watching the racing on the grass by the finish line was also great fun.
