My wife and I visited in December when Highclere was tastefully decorated for Christmas. The "upstairs " is wonderful, and even more so if you have seen the Downton Abbey series. The "downstairs" Egyptian exhibit is a genuine bonus.

A wonderful visit from start to finish. Parking was very close to the castle with pleasant parking attendants. Admission was quick and straightforward. In addition to a wonderful Christmas fair, a tour of the bedrooms including some from Downton Abbey was very special. Lovely gardens...More

Sorry drive up from Emsworth so cannot help you. Several reasonable hotels in Newbury close by.
