BLUE BADGE PARKING ONLY IS AVAILABLE. OTHER PARKING PLEASE USE LOCAL PAY & DISPLAY. Head through the imposing gatehouse and step into 3,000 years of history. Explore the castle headland with one of our experienced guides for FREE or embark on your own journey through history with one of our audio tours and gain a fascinating insight into its past, from Iron Age settlements, to the Roman signal station and medieval chapel. The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

Too be honest, when I visited the castle as research for my book "Scarborough - The Town In A Day", I was a bit disappointed. There's plenty of info available about the castle on site but do bear in mind the castle is a ruin. Don't forget that you'll need to apply your imagination to fully appreciate these crumbling fortifications... More

Hello James B Many thanks for taking the time to leave your review. I am sorry to hear you found your visit to be disappointing, although I was a little confused as you also state we are 'big and impressive'. You are correct, we are not Warwick Castle which is operated by Merlin Entertainments. Here at Scarborough we are governed... More

It's a very well preserved castle which is good in itself but the best bit is the amazing view of the coast you get from up there.

There aren't too many artefacts to see at this castle but it is a beautiful castle with spectacular views over the sea. Steeped in history, can thoroughly recommend. Tracey & Nigel Heritage members

A great time out with great Views. may be best avoided on very windy or wet days. Great for letting the kids run free for an hour too!

Been a few times with the kids and stay right next door to it. Kids love the reenactments. The view from up at the castle is amazing. It's not to expensive. It all adds to the experience of you ever visit this lively part of the country.

I have spent a very good time here, very enjoyable. I wouldn't say it was worth an entire day out as the castle and grounds are smaller than other castles and the entire history of this castle can be covered in 2-3 hours. That being said it's certainly worth the climb up the hill and it is worth getting a... More
