I never cease to be amazed at the sheer variety of art on display in this very public gallery.
While I have never come here just to see an exhibition of painting, photography or crafts (primarily because I never see these advertised anywhere), I do always enjoy spending time before and after a film or performance in the Hawthorne Theatre to just admire the work.
Clearly a lot of effort goes into producing the materials and staging the exhibitions. Perhaps I'd come to see them for their own sake if similar effort was put into promoting them to a wider audience.

Campus West contains a wide range of recreational facilities including 3 cinema screens, Roller City, a Soft play centre and two cafes.
The new Maynard gallery is adjacent to the largest Cinema/theatre venue and the larger cafe on the first/upper floor.
Artwork varies and is regularly changed offering the opportunity for visitors to view and buy some of the best artwork produced by local artists.

Over a period more to be measured in a decade or two rather than merely in years, I have been a regular visitor and admirer of the bijou arty crafty centre, the New Maynard Gallery, in the Campus West leisure centre in leafy, verdant Welwyn Garden City WGC). It has "New" in its title because the original "Maynard Gallery" which occupied the walls of a large house in the main drag in WGC disappeared in the late 1970's when the New Towns Commission sold the house and it reverted to an ordinary family residence..
Although probably only a quarter the size of the original gallery, the New Maynard Gallery - so named after Mr C.Gordon Maynard, the Chairman of the WGC Development Corporation from 1958 to 1966, has made up for the lack of quantity by espousing the concept of quality. Ever since the NMG opened in 2001 I always accepted the friendly invitation to those "Private Views" and I have never had occasion to be critical of the exhibitions - or the people that gave their time freely to make it all happen.
The New Maynard Gallery is managed entirely by voluntary effort and a recent change of personnel on the Committee has been entirely seamless. The first (and only) chairman from its inception in 2001 until 2013 was local man, George Woodcraft - and he has now been succeeded by Brigitte Trister who, with her new team, has already exhibited the same dedication to the task of continuing the successful management of the NMG.
It will always be worth a visit - just pop in and see what skills and expertise are on display in this Aladdin's Cave - and remember that many of the exhibitors are amateurs - many times I have found that hard to believe,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I am always astonished, too, by the sheer range of arts and crafts that have been displayed: painting - in oils, water colours, traditional or abstract, portraits or landscapes; needlework and weaving, jewellery, three-dimensional models, fashion, photography in all its guises, woodcraft (no pun intended !) and metal craft, etc etc etc
Come and see it for yourself ! It's FREE !!

This is a great place run by very enthusiastic people. I really appreciate the effort put into the gallery by the volunteers who run it. There are many interesting and quirky exhibitions.

Its always worth going to Hawthorne Theatre or cinema early to see the art on display beforehand. Usually a huge display of interesting works painted (or modelled) by local artists and of terrific quality. A glass of wine in hand, wandering decent works, just lovely.

The whole Campus West complex has been redeveloped to a high standard and the recent addition of two additional cinema screens (making three in total) has brought the entertainment potential even more up to date. The all new Maynard Gallery presents a variety of art works including paintings and ceramic.

To all at Two Willows.I have visited Humphreys for a number of years. I was first there after HCC Health Walks around neighbouring Sherrardspark Woods. It is a meeting place for people of all ages and classes. The reception staff, other CW staff and the cafe manager are all professional people.

There's always something on show here that is enjoyable, attractive, interesting, though provoking or informative. Sometimes all five! Definitely worth pausing to look at the exhibits while at an event or simply in Humphrey's café. And it's free!
