Enjoyed the 10 mile walk on a lovely autumn day. The tree colours were beautiful and the Loch and surrounding area stunning. It’s a flat walk with a few rough paths to navigate , just the place to get away from it all.

Well maintained car park with (closed for Covid) toilet block. The car park takes £4 and needs coins, but you can donate via PayPal if you don’t have cash: we met a Ranger who told us that all the money goes towards looking after the paths around the loch and up lochnagar. Those paths are very well maintained indeed! Great views, good start for lochnagar.

Wonderful short walk through the forest to picturesque Loch. You can make it longer if you take the full circuit but definitely a great walk

We cycled up from Ballater which is about 10 miles to the Loch. It’s a gradual climb for most of the way, but quite gradual as you only ascend about 250m in 10 miles. We did it on mountain bikes and at 54 and 14 stone I’m hardly a climber! When you get there the Loch is amazing with a wide rideable track around the edge with slight inclines. But be aware the section between 10 and 12 o’clock if you look at the Loch as a clock from the carpark, is about a mile long and totally unridable. We are experienced mountain bikers who do red and black routes, who still ended up pushing or carrying our bikes for this section. The problem isn’t just the big boulder piles blocking the path you have to carry your bike over, it’s because it’s so narrow it’s not wide enough to turn your pedals without hitting them on the rocks. But don’t be put off, this section is only about a mile or so long out of the 8 miles of great track!

Quick note to remind walkers that car park is £4 coin only or pre pay using the “outdooraccesstrustforscotland” website where there is a paypal link. Nb. Next to no signal nearby. Great walk round the loch and good access to longer distance routes. Track on north side very bike able if you want a quicker way in for a longer walk.
