Well worth a visit whilst you are in Stamford, and just a short walk from the town over the river bridge

Just up the street from the Bull and Swan is the tomb of Lord Burghley. The church yard and church! I wandered just to soak up the historical ambience.

This church is not the most ornate though the Cecil tombs are of interest. On going in they are not immediately obvious - you need to walk towards the altar and look left as they are i a separate chapel. Outside at the back is...More

Nice to find the church open and to be able to view the Cecil tombs, there are guide books and post cards on sale and good directions to the famous grave in the grave yard.

This simple and rather plain church sits in "St Martins Without", on the hill going out of Stamford. Its lack of ornate decoration is compensated for by the quiet dignity of this holy space, which is used for concerts as well as worship

This 15th century church houses the tombs of William Cecil chief advisor and secretary of state to Elizabeth I plus various tombs and monuments to other family members. Quite sombre inside but some lovely carvings and stained glass windows give a real sense of history.

I've visited this church several times and I've never found it open. This time I made a beeline behind the church and across to the second churchyard to view the gravestone of Daniel Lambert, then the largest man in England.

St Martin's is a little way from the town centre but it well worth walking to see it. In the north chapel are some fantastic memorials to members of the Cecil family from nearby Burghley House. The church is very welcoming and was a pleasure...More
