Not a bad pub with a strict dress code of Stone Island coat, baggy jeans and concealed weapons, one of the more classy Dewsbury establishments

When we called with a guest last month it was closed. Does anyone know whats happening? It was always convenient and acceptable to drop in. Gave 1 star because submission wasn't accepted without

Tuna salad
Jul 2018 • Couples
Visited recently with my partner for a meal. Overall the service was efficient and friendly, and the atmosphere was excellent. However the overall experience was sadly let down by the Tuna salad my partner had which was extremely average and way overpriced for effectively what was a can of tuna. At a cost of £16.95 we wouldn’t be having it again. I had the carbonara at £10.95 and while nothing exciting it did the job and no real complaints about that.
It’s debateable if we would return again, and ultimately left feeling a little disappointed, or to be cruel ripped off !

Beef-obsessed but the clue's in the name, and the beef IS REALLY GOOD!
Aug 2017
Having visited this country pub many times over the years, it is fair to say that it has had it's ups and downs - historically, as a result of a penchant for microwaved, mass-produced muck, these have been mainly 'downs'.

So 'Why did you go there for lunch?', you might be asking.

Well, my father and I were in the area and, as we like to consider ourselves reasonable people, thought 'what the heck, let's give it another try!'.
So, in we went.

Initial impressions were that a lot of effort had gone into the look and feel of the place - yes, there were some minor rough edges that a dab of paint would remedy, but generally the bar was welcoming and snug (and dog-friendly), and the restaurant was up there with the very best of them in terms of table presentation.

Having had some fairly basic meals in this place over the years, we were not expecting much and picking up the lunch menu it appeared that our worst fears may about to be realised with some fairly standard pub grub*; Burgers, Lasagne, etc.

*It is worth noting here that fairly standard pub grub can be excellent if cooked fresh with a dash of TLC and a sprinkling of artistry, but none of those qualities have previously been demonstrated at this eatery. So you can see our concern.

Concern that was speedily laid to rest upon the discovery of 'The Restaurant Menu' - Yay!

The first encouraging sign that we picked up on was a note alongside the 'Pie Of The Day' warning that there may be a wait of 20 minutes for this dish. My dad's a bit of a Pie Aficionado (capital P, capital A), and he excitedly reported that 'It can't be microwaved then, lad!'.

One happy camper. Good. Now what shall I have?...
On one side of the menu page, there must have been at least a dozen different types of burger (Beefy), and on the other page was a selection of steaks (Beefy) and a smattering of alternatives (Not Beefy).

I had the beef.

In fact, I had a deliciously cooked (medium/rare) steak with an apparently home-made Peppercorn sauce bursting with flavour. The steak was excellent and completely free of the fat and gristle which can often bring a good steak down.

Pops' pie was thoroughly enjoyed and all in all, the meal was a delight. If the Sunday carvery is as good as our meals were here, it will no doubt be rivalling the local Beefeater (I know. I know. It's all about the Beef. Whatever.)

HIGHLIGHTS:
Cooked to order and delicious food. Very friendly and pleasant staff. A jolly nice welcome!
Ironically, very few things to beef about.
IMPROVEMENTS:
Under new management so one or two bits will no doubt be ironed out as time goes by; e.g. sauces not on menu and staff unsure. Ceiling could use a little TLC. Very few staff - (But it wasn't particularly busy and didn't affect the service too much) All minor issues.

OVERALL:
An excellent experience and delicious meal. If you like Beef - there's literally nowhere else you should go! Other menu choices are available.

NOTE:
(Almost deducted a star for the minor details that could benefit from a little attention but in the end, the meal and staff were so excellent that I felt it would be jolly harsh! And I'm sure those details are on the 'to-do' list!)

Monday night for a quick bite out!!
Dog friendly pub "Muddy boots and muddy paws welcome"!!
Under new management who have really transformed the place. A shame that the old reviews still stand!
We had burgers which were succulent and tasty and with a few drinks worked out at £16 per head.

Nice pub

Great to see it open again and we hope they do really well, the only criticism is the smell of the over powering Lily's! You can actually taste them when you are sat in the lounge area having a drink 😖

Amazing meal and atmosphere

Under new management, only been once before and can't comment from the previous visit, as was just a quick drink.
Today's visit, I genuinely can't fault. Friendly welcome, personable staff (a lovely chat with landlord). Food was absolutely outstanding, freshly made, tasty and plenty to eat.

Dogs very welcome, drink and food options for them too.

Can't recommend highly enough.

Will be returning before long.

Average carvery with little consideration for small children
Nov 2016 • Family
Came here on Sunday the 6th November for a carvery just after 12 and there were only 3 or 4 tables actually taken taken to be told all the high chairs we in use as they only had 3 in the whole establishment, so we had to sit our 18 month old little boy on a chair with arms which wasn't ideal as he spent most of the time standing up etc.
Food was bland and average which is a shame as the interior is well appointed and the beer choice is good also.
