Birthday visit Easter Saturday.

Oh what a shame! Malt shovel, carr gate should have it all. A Bank holiday week end, hottest day of the year (forecast for days prior ) great location, medium sized field for a beer garden, plenty of outdoor seating and stuff for kids to explore and enjoy. Now the down side, that old chestnut, service. Pitiful. One person behind the bar, not sure how many in the kitchen but at 1pm when our table was booked for and we were trying to get our first drinks, the bar person was already refusing food orders as "The kitchen was too busy to take any more orders in the next 45 minutes" Lucky for us we had pre- ordered our table and food but were still stuck in the drinks queue. Imagine Easter weekend, hot weather, food available but only one person serving at the bar! Food arrived about 45 mins later and was ok but one main course had been missed altogether and would not be available for another 20 mins , by which time the rest of the party had finished their meals. When it did arrive it was poorly presented, just seemed to have been thrown on the plate and delivered. The bar service was not improving, there was another girl filling in behind the bar whilst at the same time ferrying food out into the garden area but between 2 and 3 PM people were having to queue from the front door to the bar before even getting near to a table. We even had a 12 year old boy asking us how our food was and after he was collecting the plates and empty glasses. Service, service, service, should be the cornerstone of any pub serving drinks and food on a busy holiday weekend. Malt shovel, get some staff..

Won't be going again!

Our first visit to the old malt shovel and will definitely be our last.
Went for a meal on Sunday evening with a friend. The garlic bread starter was literally dripping in oil and was a soggy mess. The starters left our table and about 20 seconds later the mains arrived. My burger was promptly sent back because the toasted bun was black!! It was returned a few mins later and had simply been put onto a new un-toasted bun. The burger itself was burnt, dry and missing the onions we had paid extra for. The salad was limp and tasted days old and the chips clearly frozen. No presentation whatsoever, looked like it had been thrown on the plate.
Complained once again and was given a free drink and starter.
No atmosphere in the place for a Sunday night, infact the staff started hoovering around us at 7:45!!
Only decent thing about the whole visit was the staff. They were friendly and the young waitress was very apologetic about the awful meal.
Can't see the old malt shovel being around for long if its serving up food like that.

Grandson's 2nd Birthday
Dec 2015 • Family
The girl behind the Bar was happy and helpful. The Landlord was rude, having visited this pub several times with the same size party or more often ( 4 adults 3 kids under 5) and never been told to book before he promptly threw cards at us to book in future!!!. The pub was not busy having only 1 other couple and a group of 5 eating. My eldest grandson asked if he could play with his toys and the girl said of course. On serving our meals the landlord said he had to get off the floor in case they got busy!!. Needless to say nobody else came in to eat. Thanks for ruining a special day

OK for a quick meal..
Aug 2015
Me and my family went here a few weeks ago for a sunday lunch, I found the pub very basic, not very welcoming, but as for the food i couldn't complain, the portion size's were very big plenty of food to go around a family of four. I also found that when you have finished your meal you can take home any left over meat which i found was very good since we had a lot left. Over all it was ok but i won't be making it one of my first choice's.

Rude

We arranged to meet for our grandsons birthday at the old malt shovel due to the Sunday lunch and large outdoor play area and beer garden . However it was raining so we entered the pub and ordered drinks we then asked if they could do a table for 6-8 , we were told no we should have booked.
Then the landlady said she would look at the bookings and try to fit us in, but then instructed to move to the seating area. The group swelled to 12-15 and we decided not to eat there as there was no capacity when I told the landlady she tutted and said typical.
Then when our grandson was opening his presents we were told by the scruffy land lord not to eat his sweets on the premises and to make sure we cleared all the mess and wrapping paper away with us . The family group was large 15 or more and spent over 100 pounds on several rounds of drinks .

Avoid at all costs
Your not welcome regulars only who have set tables for their lunches and passers by do not enter

Family Dinner
Jan 2015 • Family
Booked in to meet up with our Yorkshire relatives for dinner on Friday night. All seven had lovely meals. No rush to order and given plenty of breathing space between courses. The only complaint we had was there portion control needs some tweaking.Steaks came cooked as they were ordered and the Mediterranean Lamb that my mum had was delicious. It does not pretend to be Cordon Bleu but is good wholesome home cooked food at a good price.

Disgusting, Rude Attitude & Scruffy - Don't waste your money here.
Dec 2014 • Family
We booked a table for 17 people for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately 4 people in the party were delayed an hour away, so I told them, and said that if they wished to let anyone else have the table for 4, then please do so. I was told they couldn't as our food was ready to come out of the kitchen. We hadn't even ordered any food! I was then told that there wasn't a choice, it was just Sunday lunch, but we were not told this at the time of booking. I asked if they could keep the food warm for the four delayed people, but they said they couldn't as all 17 meals were in dishes together! I asked if they had a microwave to reheat the food for them on arrival; she just said they could box it up to take home! The ignorant landlord said we would have to pay for all 17 meals we had ordered. We hadn't ordered any meals, just booked a table.

Sunday Lunch
Sep 2014 • Family
Had a lovely lunch with family this sunday, promply served at 1pm, didn't realise that you get all 3 meats , so was surprised when chicken, beef & pork were served! Had lovely roast potatoes, but the mash wasn't very well mashed & a little dry. wasn't told that you get a pudding included, so again very surprised to get home made sponge & custard ( or you could have ice cream). overall i would say this was a very homely meal and as we didn't pay very much for it we were all very pleased. we were asked to leave our table so they could get it ready for the next people, but as it was very busy we didn't mind, so went to garden centre next door! if you don't go expecting 5 star then you won't be disappointed.

Mucky and rude
I recently visited the Malt Shovel in Wakefield, Bradford road. They seem to have done so much to bring in the crowd but I was greeted with a scruffy, rude man whom I though was the handy-man and turned out he was the landlord. He was boasting to some how if cars are left he vandalises them to stop people leaving cars on his car park over night.

He asked if we were ordering food as we sat at the side if the pub. We asked for menu but it took ages for it to arrive. We then said it was ok and not to mother. We were asked to leave so they could have the table for "folk who paid".

After seeing the state of his finger nails I don't want to eat there.

He made many feel uncomfortable and intimidated.

Avoid avoid avoid!
