Panoramic ruins from a dramatic time in European history
Sep 2021
Panoramic views radiate from this hill-top vantage point, so vital for a castle in the middle-ages. Looking down to the site of the Battle of Wakefield one can imagine the chink of armour and the neighing of horses as Richard of York and his retinue and loyal nobles road out to doom and destiny. This is a well maintained and atmospheric site to ponder and pay homage to those brutal Cousins Wars which we many know as the Wars of the Roses. There is much to see in spite of the castle being a ruin.

Set off my imagination!

Really interesting, but more so if one knows the tale of the battle of Wakefield, it's causes and aftermath.
One criticism though - OPEN THE TOILETS FOR THE LADIES!!!!

Well kept little castle
Sep 2020
Sandal Castle stands on a hill top from where there are magnificent views of the surrounding area. There is a path right round the ruins so the entire castle can be seen. A path also leads up to a viewing platform and there is access to every part of the castle. There are a few information boards, one showing how the castle would have looked.

Wonderful castle walk
Jan 2021 • Couples
The views over Wakefield on a clear winter’s day are spectacular. It is surprisingly high over the surrounding countryside. The paths are good and there are plenty of benches. The car park is quite large but the approach road can also be used. A good place for a COVID safe walk.

A gem in Wakefield
Oct 2020
Finally visited Sandal Castle recently and what a little gem we’ve been missing. It’s a beautiful, well kept attraction and a ‘must visit’ if you’re in the area. Easily accessible from Sandal by car or if you’re visiting Pugney’s Country Park it’s worth a detour on one of several paths up to the castle. The views are amazing and there is a series of interesting information boards telling the history and there is no admission fee. Will definitely be visiting again. Time spent there, about 1 hour.

Local History
Oct 2020
We just about live on the doorstep but do not visit as often as we should, It's a wonderful place that brings our local history to life with the ruins and the information boards. The recent renovations have made a vast improvement to the grounds and the Castle Cafe provides a lovely retreat to finish off your visit.

Hidden gem
Mar 2020
It's actually not that hidden as it can been seen from the M1 but it's amazing how many people don't know it's here.

It's very historical and a lovely place to walk round with interesting information boards. As well as the castle you get great views of Pugneys and the surrounding area and towards Wakefield city centre

Dog poo
Nov 2019
Views are lovely but it is full of dogs off lead and the inevitable dog poo. Have had to stop going as I can’t risk the children stepping in it. It’s so bad, the past few times we’ve been it’s been all over the path! Revolting! Such a health and safety risk as it can cause blindness.
