- ericroebuckMechanicsville, Maryland69 contributionsTruly an awesome place to visitOur family had so much fun here. You get amazing views of the cliffs, can walk down to the water and walk the cliffs in either direction. Recommend at least 2 hours here when the weather is cooperating. We hiked from the parking lot up to the hill to the lighthouse and then over to get views of the Beachy head light house. If you want to see beachy head just come here and do the nice 2 mile round trip hike over. Coming here was a highlight of our visit to the south east coast.Dear ericroebuck, It is lovely to see your 5 star review of Birling Gap. I am glad to hear your trip was the highlight of your visit to the South Coast and hope you get to do it again in the future.Written July 21, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 14, 2024
- Nicola C3 contributionsBeautiful views! We went on a sunny weekend in May! It was a lovely place and you could see the Seven Sisters. There are steps down to the beach and you can park at the National Trust car park. There is a cafe and there are toilet facilities there, but there are certain open times, so check if you were going early evening as maybe closed.Dear D9501VZnicolac, Thank you for leaving us a review and we hope you enjoyed your visit. - janetc7575143 contributionsAmazing! This place was absolutely breathtaking! I went on a gloomy day that was raining off and on and VERY windy but it was still incredible to see the cliffs! I absolutely recommend visiting here. It was an easy day trip from London taking the Southern train service and then the tourist sightseeing bus.Dear janetc7575, I am glad to hear you found your visit amazing. Birling Gap can be windy on the coast but as you say it is incredible to see the cliffs at any time of the year. We hope you get to visit in calmer weather next time.Written July 21, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten June 7, 2024
- Hervik JamesBedfordshire, United Kingdom86 contributionsSeven sisters on a good weather dayI have decided to go on a solo hike on the seven sisters. This is a moderate hike and it took me 6 hours to and from. Every descent and acceleration gives you a different view and everywhere you turn, there’s always something to see. The parking at birling gap is free for national trust members. I was there at 0745 am on a weekday and there was no one there. The cafe was still closed and opened around 10 am. Same opening time goes for the toilets. I suggest that people go here during off peak times 12 noon onwards were the peak hours.Dear CallmeMRSJames, Thank you for your 5 star review and I am glad you enjoyed your solo hike. Our opening times can be found on our website and it is worth checking as these do change through out the year. We do let visitors know on our socials when we expect to be busy and as you suggest visiting outside of peak times is a good option.Written July 21, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 12, 2024
- jimbo2006202 contributionsWorth it for the view!Go-early! The car park fills up fast but it is free to National Trust members so go early to find a space. The stairs are manageable but when they are crowded elderly visitors might be uncomfortable. The views are fantastic but the rocky beach is very hard to walk on. Get a good pair of swim shoes! The toilet has queues!Dear jimbo2006, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. As you point out we can get extremely busy and that can put our Victorian plumbed toilets under pressure. The viewing platform and steps can also be very busy. We hope you visit during a quieter period next time.Written July 21, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 1, 2024
- Stewart CChatham, United Kingdom1,106 contributionsThere is much to see and do here either the Birling Gap or along the South Downs way.I visited the Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters on a Saturday in June whilst walking from Beachy head to Alfriston. I visited once again the following day with my wife to explore the area in more detail. The area around the Birling Gap is owned by National Trust, there is a large (pay & display) car park here which gets busy at popular times. The car park is free for National Trust members. There is much to see and do here either in the immediate area of the Birling Gap or by walking along the South Downs way footpaths in either direction where the walker will be rewarded with impressive views from the cliffs. The Birling Gap has a fairly large café facility, a gift shop, information centre and public toilets. Four cottages remain from an original terrace of eight built for the coastguard in 1878 and periodically another one is lost as the coast line is eroded by the sea. A small shingly beach may be reached from a set of stairs leading from the car park and if you are visiting the beach is it is advisable to stay clear of the chalk cliffs in case of chalk falls. The information centre is well worth visiting, it shows how much the area has changed over many years, particularly with respect to the cumulative coastal erosion clearly visible in old photographs and maps. On the day of our visit, there was a member of National Trust staff on duty here who was very knowledgeable about the area. Exploring the Seven Sisters, the walker climbs up the South Downs Way on an unsurfaced road to ‘Went Hill’ and from here on a clear day. You will be rewarded with views out to sea and also west along the undulating Seven Sisters cliffs to the Cuckmere River. On the day of my visit, it was sunny and out to sea there was a visual phenomenon known as ‘Fata Morgana’ in which ships at sea appear to be floating in the air. The walking surface is predominantly grass over chalk downs though the wide well trodden footpath shows signs of erosion caused by thousands of feet and the surface can become loose and crumbly in places. This was particularly true of some of the downhill sections which can be steep and require care when negotiating some of the paths worm down to the chalk in a shallow trough. If taking children and / or animals with you, the visitor should be aware that the cliff edges can be treacherous and there is a sheer drop from these to the sea below. Certainly, glad that I have visited this area, the scenery is striking and photogenic, the cottages act as a reminder of coastal erosion through the years and the transitory nature of the natural earth.Dear stewartc640, Thank you for your review and I am glad to hear you enjoyed your visit.Written September 5, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 15, 2024
- Jayneeka LLeicester, United Kingdom108 contributionsStunning viewsDecided to do a last minute trip to Eastbourne due to my nieces wanting to walk the Seven Sisters route. We were initially unsure where to start our walk from, decided to beginning from the Seaford visitors centre. Parking all days was £4.50, the visitor centre had facilities, coffee shop, cafe and a visitors centre selling a wide range of items. Starting the walk from seaford visitors centre was the best option for us, that was to Birling gap took around 2 hours. Sections of the route is fairly steep, and we had already nice weather and a slight breeze which made the walk much more bearable. The cliffs are very high, so would advise against walking too close too the edge especially if the weather is cold or windy. Certainly need good footwear, snacks are a must, water for hydration and don’t forget your cameras/phones. The views are stunning, and it’s a shame cameras can’t capture what your eyes can see. Please note this was requires a general level level of fitness.Dear Jayneeka, Thank you for leaving us a 5 star review. I am glad to hear you enjoyed your walk across the Seven Sisters, it is certainly stunning and popular.Written December 15, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 7, 2024
- Anneke SSommelsdijk, The Netherlands4,982 contributionsStunning views of the chalk cliffs the sevensistersWe were lucky that there was still a parking space available for our van, where the visit center is also, because it is quite crowded. We walked upstairs and took pictures at the stairs/platform. Of the beautiful chalk cliffs, the seven sisters very familiar and now allowed to see for themselves. You can go down a flight of stairs to the beach and also up over the rocks. We went towards the lighthouse It's slowly rising. Here you have beautiful panoramic views everywhere. At the lighthouse were surprised that there is a very small outlet for some refreshments. After an ice cream we went back for a walk.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 30, 2024

Some of the pathway was stony but she could manage it with her walking aid. She was able to walk up to the viewing platform and take in the view. My daughter and I walked along the beach. There are lots of lovely linger walks to go on too.Dear KateLondon_9, Thank you for leaving us a 5 star review. I am glad to hear you enjoyed your visit with your mother and daughter. The National Trust car park at Birling Gap makes an excellent starting point for your visit to The Seven Sisters. The car park is free for Trust members, £3 for two hours, or £5 for the day. There is a cafe, gift shop, and toilets on site as well as access down to Birling Gap beach. Head up the coastal path for the mile or so cliff top walk to Beachy Head with spectacular views. Well worth a visit !

There’s two halves to a review about Birling Gap. Firstly the scenery itself is breathtaking. The views along the Seven Sisters is best viewed from the beach to give a sense of scale and is well worth the trip.
The second is the National Trust facilities and sadly the service here is probably the worst ever experienced at any NT property. While social distancing is to be expected, staff/volunteers barking at visitors isn’t. The lady in the shop shouting at people to sanitise their hands when they already had, asking them to wait outside as the shop was ‘full’ (4 in shop not the advertised 6) and berating two ladies browsing to hurry up is not what you expect. Only one toilet open as two out of order due to ‘mechanical issues’ and a 25 minute queue. On using it found the toilet filthy and clearly hadn’t been cleaned. Pointed this out to a NT staff member and was told ‘we are busy so don’t have time to clean.’ Signage looks tired and staff seem not to care. Enjoy the scenery but avoid the NT facilities.

Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters can be reached by walking (about 1.5 miles from East Dean), by bus and by car. There's a fairly large car park (pay and display but free for National Trust members). Once there there's some former Coastguard cottages, a cafe, shop and visitor centre and steps down to the beach. Eight Coastguard cottages were built in 1878 but there's only four remaining. The café is National Trust run, so don't expect fine dining but the usual National Trust offerings. There are also toilet facilities but these aere barely adequate. But what you have to come here for is the walking. Birling Gap is on the South Downs Way and rioughly half way between Cuckmere Haven (3.5 miles away) and Beachy Head (4 miles away). The best views of the Seven Sisters are seen as you approach Birling Gap from the Belle Tout lighthouse.

Seven Sisters Country Park is an easy walk from the car park to the sea and back it is around 2.5 miles. The majority of the route is paved but the last part towards the beach is not.
Beautiful meandering river running alongside the route, becomes a fast flowing river into the channel.
The area is prone to flooding when heavy rain occurs, worth checking in the winter if floods have affected the walk before visiting.

We were glad we were National Trust members as the parking charge is fair for a full day but a little pricey just to take in the view. The scenery is stunning but the information display next to the shop felt dated and wordy. It wouldn’t excite a child or young person.

This is our second visit to Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters, as we enjoyed our first visit so much. There is a cafe and toilets available here. We boarded the open topped double decker bus outside of Eastbourne Pier which costs £7.50 for a ticket which lasts 24 hrs. You can hop on and off at various locations including Beachy Head which has a lovely pub, however my favourite pub is a little further on called The Tiger Inn which does nice food. Buses run about every half hour there is a timetable attached to the bus stop. For £7.50 you can board the bus and just stay on and go around and round if you wish, best views of course are upstairs. The bus also has an audio commentary which is crystal clear and informative. I highly recommend this tour ... when we go back to Eastbourne we will do it again.

We walked the seven sisters starting from Seaford and were happy to focus on this as our halfway point on the way to Eastbourne. Amazing views from here even if you’re not doing the walk, and nice to have the bathroom facilities available. We arrived on a Monday at 1pm and the only lunch food left were scones and egg salad sandwiches, so don’t necessarily count on the cafe for lunch, but you can easily find a treat there or in the shop.

Driving from Eastbourne takes about 15 mins to the Birling Gap (put that in your phone or GPS) which is the landmark spot and National Trust venue from where you can see the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs very easily and conveniently. You can also climb down the stairs to access the stone beach.
You can park in the National trust car park at Birling Gap for approx £1.50 per hour in coin or download the pay to park app. There is no phone signal here but a free WiFi hotspot is available by the shops and bathrooms.
Alternatively you can park for free on the road just outside the car park leading to and from the car park itself. You will see plenty of cars.
This is defi something to do in a nice day otherwise you may not enjoy being out there exposed to the high winds for too long.

This is a wonderful place for walking. Starting from the National Trust car park (free to members), cafe and toilets, there is a fairly easy walk up to the Belle Tout Lighthouse and back. All the way there are stunning views of the South Downs and, on the way back, equally stunning views of the Seven Sisters themselves. Unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Live fairly close to beach head and usually go and watch the sunset from birlin gap, absolutely breath taking views and can also.do the walk up and over the sever sisters which is stunning any time for the day, but especially at sunset. However does get rather busy with cars abandoned everywhere all down the road in the summer

Yes, but there are several busses that also run around the area, in the summer they are open top busses. Check out the Southdown bus timetables
