Amongst the farmland a beautiful stonework church
Aug 2019
We were visiting Vik, home of some of my ancestors. We explored the grave markers here to see if we recognized any names. The Hove Church is the oldest stone building in the Sogne Fjord region and probably one of the oldest in Norway. It has been dated to the end of the 12th century. The church is named after Hove farm. Rich burial finds from Roman times show Hove to be an early chieftain s residence and historians think the church may have been built by a prominent landowner as a private chapel. It is a beauty of stone mason construction skill.

12th Century
Jul 2019
The Hove Stone church was constructed in the 12th century originally for the local elite -- hence the stone construction instead of wood which would have been predominate for centuries during that time period. Small admission fee but you get a personalized tour that comes with it. Very close to Hopperstad Stave Church so you can easily see both during the same visit. It does help to have a car -- not sure you can really reach via public transportation.

Extraordinary restored church and an amazing history lesson. Vik I Sogn has much to offer. I can not wait to return.

Restored ancient church.

Beautiful little church, contrasting with the stave church nearby. Painted interior looks quite bright (restored c. 1860). Very helpful but shy guide. Wonderful views down valley.

On my visit to Vik, Norway to see the Hopperstad Stave Church, I am please to discover another gem. The beautiful Hove Stone Church is a wonderful old stone church. Unfortunately, it was not open at the time I was there to go in, but the outside and the grounds make it worth the journey to visit. Another wonderful piece of history.

Attractive Stone Church

We were able to walk around the outside of this stone church. Being early June it was not open yet for the tourist season. It is very close to Hopperstad Stave Church, less than a 10 minute drive. The most entertaining thing for me were the metal dragons which adorned the eves. One of them had a bird perched inside.
