About
From the Varden viewpoint (407 metres above sea level) there is a good view of the town of Molde, the fjord and islands and the famous Molde panorama with its 222 partially snow-clad peaks. On clear days you can see as far as the fishing village of Ona and the dreaded waters of Hustadvika. Ten minutes by car or an hour's walk along the nature trail from the centre of Molde. The Vardestua restaurant is at the top and marked trails take you into the Moldemarka countryside.

One of the most beautiful viewpoints on earth! You can go up by car or just walk. You have a 360 degree view and can start a walk from the viewpoint. There is a café, but we didn't go in there. We spend all the time looking and taking pictures

The views and pictures speak for themselves. Amazing place. Go early morning to avoid any crowds, drive or hike. Really shows the beauty of this stunning country. Also avoid days when cruise ship fools are about ruining the peace of a wonderfully quaint town.

Our cruise ship docked in town next to the big stadium. Once outside the port, small signs to Mt Vaarden and the open air museum (cultural museum) made the walk easier and the path easy to follow. The signs led you through town past a nice park with an amphitheater, flowers, and a historic home, then past a gazebo with views of the ship, and finally to the open air "cultural, historic lifestyle" museum, before getting to the well maintained path up the hillside. The small signs continued along the path at various locations up the hill to the top, leaving very few places where you had to guess where to go. The path was well maintained, but could be moderately steep in a couple places, damp in several places, and uneven in many places. The distance from the port to the overlook was 4.2km, each way or slightly more than 2.5 miles each way. The shop/cafe 3/4 of the way up the hill was not open when we hiked (neither was the restaurant at the top), and restrooms were not available throughout the hike. The overlook itself was very pretty and we walked around the area a bit before heading back.
Other paths existed in the area that were nice, and less populated. One large trail map was posted on a public board near the start of the trail up the mountain, after leaving the town streets. The hike up took us 45 min with no stops at a reasonably good pace, and 30 to 35 minutes to get back down. We spent about 35 minutes at the top.
Remember to take a small bottle of water and a raincoat. Short rain events can occur quickly and generally don't last too long, but they can be cold. Also, when the sun was out there were a few spots where small non-biting flies would gather if you stopped for too long. They were a little annoying, but nothing more, and seemed better if you kept moving.
Finally, the information center in Molde was very good, with information about the entire region. Some highlights would have been to take a trip to the Trollstigen highway, or take the train through the Trollstigen area south of the ship. There are rumors that some unique caves exist north of town and many people took a driving tour of the Atlantic Highway northeast of Molde. There was lots to do in the area if you had time, but we opted to hike up the mountain and hike around.

none of the revies i read mentioned how steep, long, difficult the walk to verden/the green corridor is!every time it seems you get to the top-it just goes on...and i'm not spoiled.frankly,on the way you see some-even great part of what you'll see on top.and if you arrive on a cruise ship-you see some of it from the deck.when we realized taxis do get to the top-we joined[for the way back] a couple who got there with the taxi.[the RT is about300 nok.-up to 4 persons].and the car drove in a very different and scenic road.

There is a cable car available to get the best views of the paorama which has to be seen to be believed.
When the cruise ships are in port there can be big lines waiting to pay the entrance fee.
You may need extra warm clothes as it is extemely cold at the top.

For a view of 222 mountain peaks, this is the place. You can go by bus or a very long uphill hike, as we did. Walking is strenuous but worth it. We saw old German bunkers from ww2 along the way and all the scenery is beautiful.

Having read the reviews on here my wife and I decided that rather than go on an organized trip from our cruise ship we would walk up to Varden. Well I am not sure of the athletic ability of previous reviewers but we both exercise regularly and found the steepness of the climb exhausting and we were not alone. It is certainly worthwhile with wonderful panoramic views but it is no walk in the Park.

The view is fantastic - definitely visit if you are in the area! The fog can appear and disappear very quickly, so be careful if you are on foot. Coffee and cake in the cafe were lovely - made even better by the open fire.

If you are blessed by good weather this is a great spot to see all that surrounds the Molde area. Easy to get to by car or a bit of a walk.

We'll be in Molde off a ship in June. Considering NorwayExcursions tour called Molde the adventurous atlantic ocean road. It's 4 hrs. We can do that at 8:30 or 10am. We'd like to wander on our own round Molde too. Reading about Varden (hike & views). How much time do we need in Molde? Is there transportation to / from Varden? We are only in port from 8am -6pm. Perhaps we'd walk one way and take transport in the other. Many thanks!

It is a wonderful walk up, but you might even more enjoy the walk down. So I suggest you do both. We did it, quite nice and slowly up for 1½ hour and the same down, we had water with us and had ½-1 hour up there enjoying, I remember it was ice cream, coffee and the. It was during the day, so we missed the cold beer

I have planned to visit Molde by bus & ferry from Andalsnes & have about two hours to spend at Molde. I need to know what is the best & economical mode to commute to Molde Panorama & will two hours be adequate to roam around & be back to board ferry?

The time at your disposal is too short to climb on foot. It is better to hire a taxi, which will take 15 minutes to the top, you can spend about half an hour at the top before taking the taxi back to resue your onward journey. The view from top on a clear day is spectacular

To see Molde the Panorama is there a cable car (funicular) and if so how far from the cruise port, or are taxis generally available? - approximate taxi cost for round trip?

We caught a boat up to the Molde so not sure how much a taxi would cost. There were also buses you could take. A funicular is there, queues could be long depending when you go but great views at the top.
