What a great little place this is. We stumbled across it by chance but then realised my wife had heard the (amazing) story many years ago. ‘Charming’ is probably a good one word description and we enjoyed a waffle, cake and tea too.

We were visiting Alesund on a cruise, and came across this house by chance. It survived the great fire of 1904 that destroyed most of the town. The story is that the day before the fire, the owner had a visit from an angel, who told him that if he stayed in the house, it would be spared - he did, and it was, and it stands to this day!
It's now a Museum, with free entry, run by three lovely, friendly ladies, who made us very welcome - in fact, it felt like we had been invited into their home! They told us all about the house, and the people that had lived there. We had a nice cup of coffee, and could have had cakes and biscuits if we'd wanted. The ladies were knitting various articles for sale in the souvenir shop, to raise funds to maintain the building.
Altogether, a very pleasant experience - so nice to talk to genuine people, who weren't trying to sell you anything.
Well worth a visit - it's a bit of the beaten track, but it's only a few minutes' walk from the town centre, at the junction where Parkgata becomes Fjellgata, and crosses Grensegata.

A little old house - and I have to think more about its history.

Our local Alesund guide Ingrid recommended this place for a look around and coffee. What a great find! The museum tells the story of the miraculous survival of the house from the disastrous fire of 1904; it was the only building left standing in this part of Alesund. It had become dilapidated over the years but has now been fully restored by a local group following its appearance on a Norwegian TV programme. It was very interesting hearing from the hospitable people who run the place and getting a mini guided tour; it is quite a small house! The coffee shop is very pleasant and cosy, seemingly well used by locals and serves various homemade snacks. It was a lovely welcome and great to chat with local people in a warm cosy atmosphere.

This is such a strange museum but it’s got such a great story as the only building in town that didn’t burn down in the great fire of Alesund. It’s run by very friendly people who tell the tale well, even taking the religious element out, it still leaves a remarkable story.

While spending the day in Alesund we stumbled across this little Museum, which has free entry. The main history to this house was the great fire in Alesund and how only one house survived. The house has been left exactly the same and no refurbishment has taken place. The house is now owned by the church and used as a museum. There is a guided tour which explains all about the house and the people within. Also in the house there are many artifacts from the 1900's. Overall this is an amazing house with an inspiring story as well. As well as all of this there is a small cafe with seating in and outside, with prices which are very reasonable for Norway and the proceeds help towards the upkeep of the house and Church.

Thankfully, Ålesund isn’t a large city so our trip here didn’t mess up our plans for the day BUT it is only open on Sundays in August. We stopped by on a Friday afternoon and were disappointed that both the hours of operation posted on TripAdvisor and the actual house website are inaccurate.

It's an old little wooden house that was the only one in that whole area that survived a devastating fire of Ålesund in 1904.
There's a nice little museum inside where you can learn it's miraculous story, and a cosy cafe with local waffles and stuff.

Very interesting story and incredible renovation of the old house from before the great fire in Ålesund. Fascinating to see the room where Anders Nord sat surrounded by the flames that did not destroy the house because of his promise to an angel who visited him the day before.
