The tourist office of Aalesund is located in a very right place. On a small square on the shore of the harbor, which offers beautiful views of the houses of the Jugendstil on the opposite shore. There is also a bus stop to the airport. There is Wi-Fi. Friendly staff will tell you how to get to Geiranger Fjord (I didn't have half a day for this). In general, a good IPO in a good place.

Have you ever gotten off your ship, dropped in a port and wanted to know what was what to do? That was us. We found the city easy to navigate, good descriptions of attractions, of course with loving waterways and Art Nouveau buildings. Wandering the streets even without directions or a map worth the visit. Enjoy your stroll.

Info center and maps available at the pier. Good bus system that can take you to surrounding areas, if you prefer. A hop-on, hop-off bus and a trolly bus are located at the pier. The city itself has a few unique sites: troll faces integrated into some of the building architecture, a very nice city park at the bottom of the 418 step path going up to the overlook platform. The park is only a short distance (several blocks) through town from the ship, and the maintained path/staircase up to the viewing platform is also easily accessible for those with the drive to "hoof it" to the top (the overlook is visible from the ship and town, so finding it, and the park at the bottom, is pretty easy). Also at the top of the hill are several maintained hiking paths, a stadium, and a few unique landmarks if you wander across them on the paths. Maps are posted at various locations throughout the trails, but we were unable to find a printed trail map (so we took a photo of one in case we needed to refer to it). The trails were well maintained, not too steep, partly wooded and had nice views over the fjords. Several people jogged the paths.
Back in town, we went over the harbor bridge where a few cafe's, coffee shops and restaurants lined the harbor canal. It was a quaint and pretty area. There were a few galleries, but they were not open on Sunday.
One note - bathrooms are scarce. There was one at the overlook, but otherwise, most were only at private establishments.
Take a rain coat--the clouds seem to move in quickly and light rain is a distinct possibility.

Small tourist office but English speaking staff were very helpful in planning our trip to Runde Island the next day. Gave us boat timings for birdwatching trips etc, driving routes.
we bought a booklet for 30NOK which is a self guided tour of Alesund town's Art Nouveau buildings, which was a good way to walk around for an hour or so and read up on the history of the town.

This centrally located tourist information office had the usual maps and brochures out and was clean. However, the staff member was very unhelpful and seemed put out to be asked for advice of anywhere still running a boat tour ot private rental now in low season. She was very curt, told us none are happening except the public ferry and that had two times, rattled them off quickly--said nothign prnted, would not write them down, seemed so annoyed with added questions I hestitated to ask her to repeat the times.
(note, I doubt this was a covid-19 concern---we were trying to keep plenty of distnace, but she was coming up closer)
We later learned a couple of op.erators are still doing things (they repsonded to our emails) and the public options arem uch more numerous than the two she told us are the ONLY things.
Given that the job of a tourist information center is to answer tourist questions about the area....it was pretty off putting.

Dear Sirs,
Thank you for your feedback. We sincerely apologize that you had this experience in the tourist information.
I have tried to give the best information out of the given situation and if you feel this was not good enough i apologize again.
There are not any (at our knowledge) providing private boats for rental, only some which has accommodation as their main service where the boat is an additional service.
Private tours are available from different suppliers but not everyone is listed in our system.
We try our best to keep all information available and will do what we can to improve.
We hope you have enjoyed your stay in Ålesund.

The TI office was east to walk to from our cruise ship (about 15 min) and the staff was very helpful. They were able to give us a city map and some recommendations for the day. The city is pretty compact and easy to explore on foot. With the map in hand we didn't get lost!

We were looking for short trips outwith Alesund as part of our stay. We were fortunate to be helped by 'Anita' who gave us lots of information and advice and booked a room for us elsewhere. Bus times/destination, changes en route - all detailed for us. First class service! But be advised - they cannot change currency, and neither do any of the banks in Alesund. It is wise to have all your money exchanged before you arrive.

Can u find the only centrally heated public bench in possible the world???? As Alesund is a pretty compact place it's easy to get plenty of info from excellent tourist information office and do main features in a day without wasting money on a cruise ship tour, the hopper bus (big que in season)stop yards from ships and goes all round town and up to view point, aquarium (why ??? same everywhere don't waste time). Alesund is easy walking if u like, its even possible to walk up to view point!!! All in all a very pleasant town
P/S if you sit on black metal bench's on inner harbour side by little snack kiosk, and you get a funny/nice warm bum/butt No you've not pee'd yourself!! They are actually heated if u look there are heating pipes going into them!!! MAGIC!!!

We arrived in Alesund in the morning, almoast everything was closed. When the office opened, we found there a lot of useful free guide books, catalogues, maps, bus schedules. For completely new people in town this is "must visit" place.

Normally I wold not make a comment about a tourist office but.............. These people were there to truly enhance your experience in their town. You could tell they truly had a passion for where they resided. From mapping and describing the walking trips. To how to get to the top of the hill and it's 412 little and long steps to a little history and a few tales. Take a minute before attacking Alesund to visit with these friendly folks.

Dear Sirs,
Thank you for your request!
We recommend you to do the self-guided walk around the town of Ålesund. This is a nice way to explore the town by yourself, and visit the most interesting spots of Ålesund. You may purchase the self-guided brochure "Along the streets of Ålesund" for 30NOK at the Tourist Information. This brochure contains a special walk through the streets of Ålesund where you may see the most beautiful areas of the town and read about the history of each place. There is also a map of the town in the middle of the brochure.
Let us know if you have any further queries!

Greetings...need your help,
My husband Mike and I are flying into Bergen on May 14th. Im trying to plan a fjord trip which would include the two major fjords, Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord. Think I have two options using public transit and cruise lines/ferries, train, and buses.
1: Bergen 2 nights - then Fly into Alesund... stay 3 nights…have adventures including visit to Geirangerfjord ...then fly back to Bergen.
Next day take Kringom Ferry to Flam passing thru fjords …stay 2 nights in Flam…then take Bergen train from Flam thru Mrydal to Bergen. (Or reverse this trip…Does it matter whether I take the train first then end the trip using a cruise or ferry line?)
Then fly out that evening to Paris. Or:
2. We make a giant loop using public transportation to visit both major fjords. Am I correct that this can be done?
Bergen (2 nights) - Alesund (3 nights) - Balestrand or Flam (2 nights) - Ferry or Cruise ship thru the Sognefjord to Bergen.
Can either of these be completed as I outlined? Any information and suggestions you can give me would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mary

We are arriving by cruise ship RCCL and are interested in doing a Puffin Safari type excursion. Do you have any information on the safaris? How we would get to the Runde area ? If possible to do so in 8 hours? Do most outfits and buses take US dollars or Credit cards?
