Choose this relaxing tour in your tempo, with rich historical evidence, interesting stories, breathtaking view over the old city center.

With this tour, you will be taken several centuries back in time to the years where most Norwegians lived a hard and poor life and lived from agriculture and fishing.

We will walk through the open air part of the museum where 55 old houses are located in the original place of the first medieval market town of Borgund. Several exhibitions and the boathouse can be visited inside, you will learn how our life was changed over the centuries.

After the Museum we drive to Aksla Mountain with a spectacular view over Alesund downtown. Afterward, we will stroll on the pedestrian street Kongengsgata - town`s main street, where each house has its own amazing story.

Be curious, join us!

I visited the Jugend style center, which gives an interesting description of the reconstruction of Aalesund in Jugend style architecture after the disastrous fire in January 1904. I liked the multimedia show. However, in the museum shop I missed a book that provides a thorough description of the fire in the 1904 and the reconstruction afterwards.

An interesting history of the great fire and how the town was reconstructed in the Art Nouveau style . Must have been traumatizing to have your home burnt in this climate but it seems to have been quite a common event in Norway’s old wooden towns .

My wife and I recently visited these 2 interconnected museums. One is a museum that specializes in art nouveau and the other modern art. You have to be a fan of modern art to appreciate that part of the museum. The art nouveau side has appropriately selected art nouveau realia and has the added bonus of having the ground floor be an old apothecary. The apothecary was pretty nice. Also on the ground floor is a film showing the great fire that took place in Alesund, which resulted in what was virtually a rebuild of the city.

We paid a visit to Jugendstilsenteret while in port on a cruise to Norway. for the most part this was a fab museum for Art Nouveau with history of making some exquisites items. The floors in the main building have some really intricate pieces and the sounds in some of the rooms adds a nice piece of authenticity to the experience. The cellar parts you use to go to the second building arefacinating with the history of the fire and replacement building processes. The final part, in the second building was a waste of time to a philistine like me. The artist had some really good idles to try and put across, but they were so laboured as to make them unwatchable. The coffee shop was really good with a nice selection of coffee, teas and cakes. As you would expect in Norway, it was a little pricey, with 3 coffee and a tea being over £18.

If you like art nouveau you will love the old pharmacy and the rooms upstairs. You can reach Kube by an tunnel and some fascinating modern works.
