On the Fjords cruise for my 40th birthday this week and the only excursion we had pre-planned/booked as I’m a huge Saxon and Viking history fan and it absolutely didn’t disappoint. Worth every penny and if you are landing at Alesund and you have any interest in Vikings you HAVE to do this! The guys that run this aren’t only clearly very passionate about their history and culture but they’re so engaging and funny all at the same time as being educational!

Made my birthday and the best thing we did all week on a wonderful holiday. If we’re lucky enough to come back I would do it again in a heartbeat.

This tour BY FAR was one of our favorite experiences on our 14-day cruise. It ended up almost a private tour as it was our party of four (two couples). Not only was our guide in character and provide details about the town and vikings, he answered any question you can imagine about the area and history. The walk is easy and the information was vast. Great highlight was being able to sit in the viking ship. This tour gave so much more to our trip than I could have imagined. We were also going to Scotland and Iceland and the content that was shared tied their history together so well! If it was not for this tour, I would have not have had such a connection to the history and land for the entirety of the trip. Definitely the tour to do in Alesund!!! Thank you for setting the stage of how vikings and Norway tie to it all!!!

We visited Alesund for one day during a cruise of the Norwegian Fjords and I booked this trip via TripAdvisor the day before we arrived because, in my opinion, the shore excursions arranged through the ship were very commercial and massively over priced. Richard was great, confirmed what time and where to meet via email and even promised to have us back on the ship in plenty of time should that be a concern. I can't really fault this tour, his knowledge of Norse / Viking history, especially of the local area, was second to none and he made it fun and very informative.

His talk about how they built and used their longboats was very interesting, especially when demonstrating with his authentically built ship.

At his friend's restaurant (I believe he was called Canut but I may have just made that up... apologies if I've got it wrong) we tasted authentically brewed Viking mead as well as dried meat, fish and bread and the pair of them were very knowledgeable around the general life of a Viking from birth to death.

I totally recommended this trip if you've got a few hours to kill in Alesund. The only very VERY minor thing I'd say is that when I booked I was under the impression that we'd be going out on the longboat. This isn't the case and it was satisfactorily explained why we couldn't (basically the way the ships were built left them with a shelf life of about 30 years and this one, unfortunately, is now past its best before date and therefore no longer sea worthy)... but that's not a gripe, just something I misunderstood when booking.

All in all a very informative and enjoyable tour, thanks.

I have been here during my holidays in August. I was not sure about the visit but me and my friends really enjoyed it and we found the guide really good. He was really informed about the story of the Vikings and we appreciated the time and wondering around Alesund with them. A different way to learn something that really happened. I definitely will suggest it

This tour with Einer aka Richard was the super highlight of our trip. He is so knowledgeable, personable, funny, interesting, he took his time with all of our questions, and you can just tell he loves his work, no rushing here. We took our time and visited and boarded the little viking ship, walked though town, tried viking food and drink. All the time he was in full dress and explained everything with passion, you would think he was a real viking! Alesund is a wonderful little town, if you are there, this tour is for you! Just anyone would enjoy it!

This was a fabulous excursion. Our guide Richard (aka Rollo) was funny, informative and exceedingly personable. Gave a great overview of Viking history, society and practices and their legacy on European history more broadly. We were a small group so had plenty of opportunity to ask questions and explore topics far and wide. I thought it was really good value and would highly recommend to anyone visiting Ålesund.

wasn't expecting this humorous innovative experience. Rollo the Viking met us at the pier and we walked 100 yards to a replica of an old Viking ship, looked like the real thing. He told us how Viking ships were made and many interesting stories about Viking life and death.
We were then taken to a restaurant to sample real Viking ship food and mead and a funny narrative on the Viking Gods.
I would recommend this experience 10/10

Loved our walking tour! Perfect English from our two guides, who were both informative and engaging. Truly appreciated the kindness they showed my 11yr old. She’s still talking about tasting Viking food. We enjoyed sitting on the Viking boat and the great banter between the Earl and the Slave. Highly recommend!
