Very interesting overview of Bergen and a good way to while away a few hours, even if it's in the pouring rain which is a Bergen trademark by the way. I would recommend doing this on your first day as you cover most of the major landmarks and get the lay of the land whilst learning some interesting facts about nordic history. We had a lovely young gentleman and even though he was from India he knew his stuff and kept us engaged and entertained. Thank you!

Our tour guide Tor did a nice job explaining the history of Bergen and it's association with the Hanseatic League. Bergen has a very interesting and unusual history, not just the old kings and queen stories that are so much a part of the rest of Europe. For us it was time well spent.

Jamie was our tour guide. While he spoke with a French accent, I was able to understand most of what he said about the town and its history. Given that the area could not use fireplaces, gathering rooms were the places for people to get warm and converse...as the Germans did for ~500+ years in the area. We learned about some of the seedy goings-ons of the time period, but also came to have an appreciation for the age and restoration of the buildings. An interesting question was posed. How long does an historic building remain authentic before it no longer is (due to upkeep and preservation attempts)? Not sure there was a right answer for that question! There was an interesting video in one of the assembly houses that showed the painstaking attempts at preserving the past while maintaining/restoring one of the old Bryggen houses. Best part of the tour? The tour guide gave everyone a small piece of Marzipan. Apparently, it was thought to cure stomach ailments in the old days. I'm ok with that, as I love marzipan! This is a good tour to give you an overview of the area, allow you to walk through historic buildings, and have someone who can answer your questions. Happens rain or shine!

An interesting tour of Bergen on foot organised by our tour company ( Riviera Travel ) on 12 Sept. Although the weather was not kind, the rain didn’t stop us seeing a lot of quaint facets of the town, the harbour area, Christmas shop etc.And the lady ( who could have benefitted from a microphone ) also gave good advice on further places to visit by ourselves after her tour. A good way to learn about the place- certainly, we found) Bergen to be easier on the eyes than Oslo ( which seemed to be full of demonstrations when we stayed there 6 - 8 Sept ). An hour or so we’ll spent.
