This fjord is very long and one of the most visited fjords in Norway. We used public bus to come to this area from Bergen. Next time we will book a private tour on a vehikle. So many historical places and natural attractions along Hardanger fjord that this is impossible to see the most of them without private transport. We made many photos of the fjord and Steinsdalsfossen waterfall not far from the city of Norheimsund that is an administraitive center there.

We booked a day trip to Rosendal, a fjord town located a couple of miles from Bergen. Not only did we get to see the fjords but we also got to see Rosendal, a charming town. DO NOT GO ON SUNDAY. On Sunday, one of the main attractions, a beautiful castle is closed. That, they did not tell us at the tourist office.

Took ferry to Eidfjord. Great ride and views. Bus from Bergen to Nordhiemsun was easy. Pay on bus with credit card. Don't know if ferry is gong to continue after 16Aug. If not, it would be a real shame. One could spend several days hopping from town to town.

We drove the scenic route along the Hardangerfjord from Granvin down to Odda. The drive was one of the highlights of our honeymoon. As they say, "the journey is the destination". My goodness it was beautiful. We were blessed with incredible weather, but honestly, there was a picture perfect scene around every corner!

I went to the Tourist Information Center near the fish market to make enquiries about the Fjord Tours. A staff there at the Center convinced me a tour arranged by them would ensure that tickets for transpiration (all modes - bus, train, ferry) to whichever fjords will be coordinated and available i.e. one will not be stranded. Based on that, I booked and paid NOK1,290 for a 10-hr day tour of the Hardanger Fjord, that was billed as a tour to see mountain, waterfall and orchards.

On the day of the tour, I showed up at the meeting point near Bergen town center. It turned out a public bus (not a tourist coach bus) that will bring us to Norheimsund, where a boat will transport us to Eidfjord. During the bus ride and the boat ride, there was no tour guide to explain any sights or assist. During the boat ride, a ferry employee informed over the PA system that to go to see the waterfall at Vøringsfossen, one has to buy a ticket on board the boat. Because I didn't have cash on hand, I did not buy one and ended walking around just Eldfjord area during the entire time while those who got the Vøringsfossen.

After the others came back from the waterfall, we were then asked to get on a boat to bring us to Ulvik. Upon arriving at Ulvik, we then were asked to get on the bus to Voss. And at Voss, then we just boarded the train back to Bergen. There were no mountains or orchards to seen. There was no time at all to even walk around Ulvik nor Voss for 15 minutes because the train ticket back to Bergen has a confirmed seat for me so even if one wants to explore Voss on his own, one runs the risks of missing the train.

Not sure how it can be called a tour when it's merely a collection of tickets for transportation. In the first place, the fjords were nothing to shout about, and Voss and Ulvik, are just points to board buses /trains. The tour was mis-labelled, poorly planned /scheduled - the entire experience was very disappointing, to say the least.

I checked with some tourists on the boat ride back, and they said they didn't pay for a tour - they simply bought different bus /boat /train tickets, and in total paid like NOK500. So this tour seems to be a scam to get tourists to pay much more, by instilling fear that one will not, on his own, be able to buy all needed tickets, to leave and get back to Bergen on the same day.

I went to the tourist center to register and explain my disappointment. After spending more than 30 minutes talking to a counter staff, I was told to come back the next day so I need to speak to a manager if I wanna file a formal complaint for take actions to be taken. I reluctantly came back a 2nd time, and the manager said she has to speak to the tour company that conducts the actual tour (I think its Fjord Tours) to see what they could do. It is ridiculous that a tourist center - that acts as a seller of tours - pushes the matter to the tour company.

The uninteresting fjord tour was bad enough to mar my vacation, but requiring a tourist to come 2 / 3 times to make a formal complaint so some action can be taken is preposterous. One wonders if the Bergen Tourist Center seriously care about the tourists it serves? One would have expected the staff to elevate a complaint (made once) to his superior. Requiring a tourist to come back a second time, just to speak to a manager on the same matter - Is that a ploy to deter tourists from filing a formal complaint, because a tourist might not have time or would have to move on to another city?

We caught the 0844 train from Bergen for the start of our trip - the alternative is a 0725 bus! The train takes you through tunnels and alongside fjords upto Voss. Here you change to a bus which takes you through outstanding scenery through high passes, past water falls and ravines, flowering meadows and serene lakes down to the small town of Ulvig at the top end of a spur off Hardangerfjord. Here we caught the catamaran and zoomed (about 20 knots or so) across to Eidfjord. There trip allows you three hours, so we selected the popular trip to the Voringfossen waterfall. This has a drop of 163 metres straight down - it looks chilling! After the waterfall and a stop at the excellent Hardanger Nature Centre we headed back to Eidfjord. The waterfall trip cost 300Kr and you can buy tickets at the TI in Eidfjord. Back on the boat we cruised back down Sorfjorden stopping at several small villages like a scheduled bus-service before heading back into Hardangerfjord and crossing to Norheimsund to get a bus back to Bergen. The views are fabulous, the sun was shining and glinting off the ice fields on top of the mountains. We saw a pair of white-tailed eagles, and porpoises, and agreed it was a great day out. Book It!

I toured this fjord after already having seen Geiranger and Sogne fjords, and was not disappointed. This fjord does have its own character and setting.. although not as spectacular as the other 2 in my opinion. I toured this fjord using public transport - catching train/bus to Eidfjord from Bergen, from where we hopped on to the public sight-seeing ferry to Norheimsund. Eidfjord was a lovely place by itself, with spectacular scenery and hills around. Just before arriving at Eidfjord, our bus went over the famous bridge across the Hardanger fjord northern arm - this was also spectacular, as the vehicle spends some minutes driving through tunnels and suddenly emerges directly into the bridge, which provides superb vistas of the fjord on either side. Anyway, the ferry trip lasted about 3 hours and it travels via Ulvik, Lofthus, Herand and finally at Norheimsund so we were treated to sights along 4 arms of the fjord. The stretch from Ulvik to Lofhus was by far the most scenic, as the fjord is quite narrow and gaciated snow mountains present on the right side. Overall I would recommend seeing the fjord on board a ferry as it gives a proper view of both sides of the fjord as compared to driving a car where one can see mainly the opposite side of the fjord that too at a distance.

We could not be on the roof because it was too windy, but we went up to take some pictures. Most of the time we were enjoying the beautiful views from inside while we were on the boat.

The wife and I opted for a do it yourself tour of the Hardanger Fjord after discovering that the Norway in a Nutshell tour covered ground we have travelled prevously. Took the ferry from Bergen to Rosendale (Nkr350) the local bus (#760, Nkr94)) Rosendale to Odda and bus (#930, Nkr303) from Odda back to Bergen. Takes a bit of planning but is very doable and thouroughly enjoyable scenic experience. If you only have a weekend (like we do at present) best day is a Sunday as there are more logical bus connections which give you a break of about 1 hour between travels to have a look around. The ferry trip from Bergen to Rosendale is very spectacular and the Bus trips from Rosendale to Odda to Bergen are brilliant especially if you have a front row seat like we did. The bus drivers are impressive, very smooth and certainly experts at their craft on the narrow Fjord main roads. Brilliant day out and one that, with changes to the route would certainly do again maybe with a couple of over night stops to really "smell the roses" and especially to explore around Rosendale a little more.
