The boat crossing costs 80KR per person). The museum is still under renovation so no interior visit. Pleasant little trails, possibility of swimming. Advice go 12km more and go to Osøyo.

This beautiful island is definitely worth a visit, particularly if you go on a Sunday and take in one of the lunchtime concerts. If you're travelling by car, here are a few tips. Lysoen keeps its jewels well hidden and there are hardly any road signs to give you a clue. Undoubtedly having a detailed map, a planned route and someone to navigate is the way to go. If however, like us, you're not that well organised and resort to using google maps as your navigator, there are a couple if things to bear in mind. Typing Lysoen as your destination does not actually take you to the ferry. Google simply tries to take you straight there and, as it is an island, gets a bit confused. The thing to do is to type in the ferry terminal which is described as Buena Quay on all the literature. Unfortunately, typing in "Buena Quay" tries to take you to various places in California. You need to type in the Norwegian spelling, "Buena Kai". We are now of course much wiser, but seemed destined to be sadder as we missed our planned ferry and seemed likely to miss our concert. Fortunately our day was saved by the very nice ferry man who made an unscheduled trip just for us. One final tip: the concert ticket includes a lovely walk through the woods.Best to wear what my mother used to call "sensible shoes".

Even though it is about 25km south of Bergen getting to Lysoen is quite easy even without a car. Take the tram to the end stop at Lagunen where you connect with Bus 62 to Buena. All free with the Bergen card. Just check the bus schedule to link in with your tram journey. We were fortunate to be there on a sunny day, & I think this is certainly a bonus. The house is very photogenic, & the tour is as interesting as Ole Bull himself. A man I have to admit I new nothing about before the visit. Weather permitting, allow yourself at least an hour to take in one of the pleasant walks on the island. We linked this trip with a morning at Greig's House. Which is easily done using public transport.

I visited the villa on a very rainy, foggy and gloomy day. I took the public bus to the pier and I was the only passenger on the boat to the island. Yeah, sensible people would stay indoors on a day like that :), but that offered me the privilege to enjoy the boat driver's kindness and conversation. With Bergen Card the bus rides and the boat ride to the island are free and so is the visit to the villa.
Few minutes into the trip, the villa revealed itself and it was nothing short of a fairy tale. Beautiful architecture, beautiful setting and breathtaking views.
The walking paths on the island, paved with crushed shells, radiate from the house. You can have long walks (unfortunately I couldn't, because of the rain and the late time), but you cannot get lost, as Ole Bull's thought was that his guests should always find their way back to the house, from each and every spot on the island.
I was fortunate to have amazing Jelena as my "private" guide, me being the only English speaking visitor at that particular time. The tour was great, very informative, Jelena told me all the stories and anecdotes of the house, of Ole Bull and his family and of some of the objects and furniture pieces in the house.
But what stayed with me above all was the energy of the island (The Island of Light), the energy of the house and Jelena's smile and conversation. It was one of those fate-arranged encounters that leave an ever lasting mark on your soul.

I don't think I need to write more about the house, you really just need to go visit it and be enchanted by its charm. Plan your trip ahead, look at the bus schedule in advance. We got up late and took the Bybanen train from the center to Lagunen and had to wait for around 1.5 hours for bus no. 62. Luckily there was a big McDonald's near the bus stop ( with a nice and clean toilet.) The bus ride to Buena Quay was picturesque, going up the mountain on a narrow road, then down to the pier. We arrived at the pier at 14:05. I thought I had missed the boat, but there was a boat waiting and we were the only two passengers. We spent around an hour in the house then hiked to one lake on the island. Sadly, we didn't t have enough time to explore the whole island. The last boat leaves the island at 4.30 pm. if you plan to explore more of the island without having to hurry, it's better to take the boat to the island at 11 am or noon.

It is a fantastic island. Not entirely easy to get here if you don't have a car but definitely worth the trouble. A little ferry gets you the few hundred yards across the fjord and a the island with its fairytalelike charm is all yours. Explore the woods, the views from the small tower in the middle of the island or get a cup of coffee at Ole Bulls house. I live about two kilometeres from the place and just love it. (We often come here on Sundays with our own little boat.)

Altough a bit far from Bergen center, it is nice to take the trip, maybe combining witha boat trip and a tour to some other attractions nearby.

A beautiful island home of Ole Bull. Has plenty if hiking trails where the easy one suites families with small children (and trolleys). Amazing view from the top. For the less active one, there's the museum and cafeteria with free wifi!
Boat goes from Buena Quay (and back) once every hour and last ferry is 16:30. Cost 80 NOK per person and 30 per child (round trip).

Thank you for the tip to find the ferry - I am wondering if you also visited the Stave church and Gregg's house?
I read there is limited parking available if we take our own car to see the church, but we would rather go on our own than schedule a tour?

Is it possible to visit Grieg’s
house and Ole Bull’s villa in the same day using mass transit? One tourist claimed they did this. We will be there on a Saturday. Thank you!

Takk for svar.
