We took the Floiban funicular up to Mount Floyen ... goes every 30mins from centre of Bergen.
Stunning views over Bergen at the top.
Vidden trail well signposted ... some tracks and rocky paths past small lakes with great views all day long.
Ended at Mount Ulriken ... cable car down was closed for renovations so we walked down the 1333 Sherpa Steps and got the number 12 bus back into central Bergen.
1hour stop for packed lunch, and plenty short stops for photos. All in all 7 hours (actual walking only 5hrs)
Toilets at top of funicular and cable car.

We went on Summer, thinking will be the best time to visit. Unfortunately we had 2 rainy days, but taling with people they mentioned "Bergen without rains is not Bergen". We understood the magestiv of the place with that definition. If you taje the Funicular some blocks from the Fruits Market, we could have one of the best views about Bergen.

We started our hike from Mt. Ulriken by taking cart up the mountain.
A night before it snowed a lot. Lots of fresh snow covered the trail. Which was great! We were the first people following the trail which is easy to navigate as every few hundred meters you have a pole showing you the way! It took us considerable time to cover 13km in knee deep (sometimes waist deep) new snow. But it was a great sunny day, quite amazing day. Later in a day and closer to Mt. Floyen we met a lot of people skiing.
Amazing hike. But do consider the following, if you have Bergen card it is 20% off the cart at Mt. Ulriken. You cannot get free ticket down Mt. Floyen with a card as the only way they can be issued is downstairs at the office. This one is strange one, how come owning a bergen card you only can get free or discounted ticket at the bottom of the mountain is beyond me. The hike is hard as you do alot of up and downs. Some basic fitness needed.
Highly recommend it! Also, you can find a trail to follow on different apps like alltrails dot com and so on, if you are worried to get lost.

The hike between Ulriken and Floyen took us 4.5hours with a stop for lunch. The first 2/3 of the route starting at Ulriken were slower going and a lot more technical requiring scrambling and a couple short but steep declines and inclines navigating the rocks. For this section it is a proper hike. The final third to Floyen was a formal path and a lot easier going. We had a misty day but we got some nice breaks in the cloud and the views were great. The mist added a bit of mystery also. We didn’t actually realise you can see the full extent of the route until we were in the final third to Floyen when the cloud started to clear. For the experience we took the cable car up Ulriken and down Floyen, you can hike these sections also. All in a good hike with a great sense of achievement at the end. Well worth using an app like All Trails to confirm your route, particularly if it is low cloud/mist as see you could easily take the wrong route.

I didn`t give the highestscore for this mountain hike because it was more difficult for me that I expected. The most of hikers are doing this tour for 4-5 hours. I spent more than7 hours. The length of the trailway is around 17-18km in total. in many places difficult to walk. We were jumping from stone to stone. I needed many breaks for the rest. But for good fit people this is very iteresting variant how to spend one day in the mountains

This trail has stunning views and beautiful scenery. But I wanted to write this review because I am absolutely in awe of Norwegian hikers. They navigate this trail like it is a simple stroll along a ridge. They are sure-footed and have impressive balance. But my family struggled quite a bit with this trail … so much so that we turned around after 5 km. It was endless rock formation after rock formation. The rocks are jagged and uneven. For those of us used to smoother trails, it was very challenging. The elevation gain is moderate, but in my opinion what makes this trail so hard is the rocks. But if you go in knowing that, it is a wonderful hike.

This was a truly beautiful hike, with great views! We saw many sheep and were lucky to have a clear day. And, there weren't that many people (did it from Mt. Ulriken to Floyen -- more people on the Floyen stretch). Should say that this is to most Americans a challenging hike. It requires hiking shoes (proper boots or good trail running sneakers with a thick sole) and scrambling on slippery and sharp rocks. We're experienced hikers, so no problem. But don't think this is an easy little walk between mountains!

Travelled the land with the family on Easter. Is a suitable sporty family, but the trip was in the longest made for us - plus there was still a lot of snow that made it difficult to walk. Recommend only to try the tour in the summer!

I took the stairs up to Ulriken, so it was a tough start.
But definitely worth it when you get up.
Nice walking path, well marked without being intrusive. Especially nice hiking terrain on the beach, where you are alone on the high mountain a few kilometers from the center of Bergen.
You have to calculate 5 hours walk at a good pace, without breaks. It is therefore a great advantage to be turvant.

Hi Sarah,
We are two strong hikers from California planning a hiking trip to Norway. I would love to see the Fjords, but I'm not a cruise person.
Vidden trail sounds amazing, but I do not want a guided hike. Is there public transportation - bus or trains to the area where you started this hike? Would you do this hike again, but solo, without a guide?
Thanks
Brenda

Also, we took public transportation from central Bergen to the gondola. No problem doing that -- I think Google told us what to do! :)

How long does the hike take if you climb up ulriken and down Floyen?
Written August 20, 2019
Plan the whole day for sure. We took a cable car up Ulriken and ended our hike at the hotel in the city center of Bergen. Took us 8 hours in total, thereof ~6 hours of pure walking as per activity tracker.

I'm planning to hike the Vidden in a couple of weeks and am trying to decide whether I will need to pack my hiking boots, or whether I can use my waterproof TEVA trail shoes. There seems to be a range of opinion as to how difficult the hike is. I'd be interested in advice on this. Thanks

Hi! Well, I would say it really depends on the weather. I personally used my hiking boots but my friend hiked in light sneakers and was pretty much okey with that. But you should keep in mind that we faced super good weather of about +20 C and sun and there was no rain for about a week before we came. However, there still were a couple of messy places and as Bergen is known to be a pretty rainy city I would strongly recommend wearing waterproofs.
About difficulty - Floyen and its surroundings have nice gravel paths but then it changes to stony terrain with a couple of steep (but easy managable) sections.
Hope you`ll enjoy your hike and keep safe :)

Hi, I am travelling to Bergen tomorrow and there is lots of rain predicted, I would like to get insight on a few things with regards to hiking in the area.
we would love to hike the 2 summits being Mt Floyen and Mt Ulriken. We are experienced and relatively fit hikers. With the rain predicted and temperatures of about 7 degrees, what type of clothing is recommended and which direction is better to do? We will have about 5 to 6 hours to do the hike...

Hello and welcome to Bergen.
Regarding your question about mt Fløyen and mt Ulriken. First of all you must have good shoes (water resistant), and clothes that can keep you dry and warm. But since you are used to hiking, you know this.
I would prefer to start at mt Ulriken for several reasons. It is the easiest route due to the fact that mt Fløyen is lower in the terrain, and you will experience the feeling of going downhill. An other reason is that you then face Bergen an it`s beauty. Personal i feel that going the other direction, is walking with my back towards the view. I hope it doesn't rain to much, so that you can enjoy the incredible scenery.

Hello! Ill be in Bergen mid-May and am planning on hiking Vidden. From what I understand you can walk in either direction from Floyen to Ulriken, vice versa. Im staying near the Floyen trail head (i think! haha) so was thinking I would start there and make my way to Ulriken. Do you have any recommendations or tips?
Written April 4, 2018
Another question, is the hike between Floyen and Ulriken 5 hours, or does the 5 hours include the hike up from bergen as well? If I were to hike from bergen to Ulriken, how long is that? Im trying to find information online but not havign a lot of luck.

Hei Sue,
well depends on how much time you have...
Driving with a rented car is awesome, with all the nature and areas you would pass... it take 8 hours just driving without stops...
train (bergensbanen) is nice aswell beautiful views, can get a bit long in the train in 8hours... but nice aswell...
airplan is most expensive but fast around 1hour...
enjoy norway
many greetings
