We went on Summer, thinking will be the best time to visit. Unfortunately we had 2 rainy days, but taling with people they mentioned "Bergen without rains is not Bergen". We understood the magestiv of the place with that definition. If you taje the Funicular some blocks from the Fruits Market, we could have one of the best views about Bergen.

We took the Floiban funicular up to Mount Floyen ... goes every 30mins from centre of Bergen.
Stunning views over Bergen at the top.
Vidden trail well signposted ... some tracks and rocky paths past small lakes with great views all day long.
Ended at Mount Ulriken ... cable car down was closed for renovations so we walked down the 1333 Sherpa Steps and got the number 12 bus back into central Bergen.
1hour stop for packed lunch, and plenty short stops for photos. All in all 7 hours (actual walking only 5hrs)
Toilets at top of funicular and cable car.

We started our hike from Mt. Ulriken by taking cart up the mountain.

A night before it snowed a lot. Lots of fresh snow covered the trail. Which was great! We were the first people following the trail which is easy to navigate as every few hundred meters you have a pole showing you the way! It took us considerable time to cover 13km in knee deep (sometimes waist deep) new snow. But it was a great sunny day, quite amazing day. Later in a day and closer to Mt. Floyen we met a lot of people skiing.
Amazing hike. But do consider the following, if you have Bergen card it is 20% off the cart at Mt. Ulriken. You cannot get free ticket down Mt. Floyen with a card as the only way they can be issued is downstairs at the office. This one is strange one, how come owning a bergen card you only can get free or discounted ticket at the bottom of the mountain is beyond me. The hike is hard as you do alot of up and downs. Some basic fitness needed.

Highly recommend it! Also, you can find a trail to follow on different apps like alltrails dot com and so on, if you are worried to get lost.

Three of us hiked Vidden Over, two 35-40 year old men and me, a 60+ year old woman. I recommended it because it is challenging, but not too hard, and the views from up there are absolutely gobsmacking. Unfortunately, we had fog for the first half, so no views. Guideposts are close enough together that you don't get lost, even in the fog. It cleared just as we got to the lovely lakes where we took a break.

They say it takes 5 hours, but in the many times I've hiked it, it's at least 7 hours. Take the cable car up Ulrikken and the Funicular down Fløyen.

If you want to do it, I recommend to start not that late. The later you take the gondola up to Ulriken or the Fløybanane, the more people will be there as well. The trail itself is well marked in my opinion, and the views down to Bergen and the mountains further away, as well as to the sea, are just beautiful. Sometimes there are some steeper parts, but it's doable for everyone in a not that bad shape.
The closer to Fløybanen I got, the more people I met. Mt. Fløyen itself is dfinitely pretty crowded and I didn't want to stay that long up there anymore.
If you want to prolong the hike, you can start directly in Bergen, and also walk down to Bergen again, insted taking the train/gondola.

I attempted this beautiful trail, but it was above my capability level. Don't attempt this if you are out of shape. The rock climb is steep in areas (up and down climbs my son considers scrambles and I considered significant). The active Norwegians danced over the rock, but I was much slower on that surface (smile). However, what I saw up there was marvelous. Mountain lakes and views of neighboring mountains -- not to mention seeing frogs and occasional other little animals.

1) Start from Ulriken and walk till Fløyen. Follow "Vidden" or "Fløyen". Be careful: sometimes the cable car is closed due to wind, so check before.
2) By the way, if the weather isn't ok, like cloudy or rainy, don't bother to go there: you wouldn't see the beautiful views and bear in mind it might be worse at the top!
3) Bring good shoes because the trails are rocky and very muddy. You must wear warm clothes and have a lot of water.
4) You must be fit to do it! Contrary to what I read in the brochure, this hike would be too difficult for children or old people. It took us 6 hours with some short pauses to take photos and a couple of longer pauses to eat our packed lunch and some well-deserved fruit! (No toilet on the way, just at Ulriken & Fløyen).

When all conditions are met, this hike is a great Bergen activity, with gorgeous views! We were so happy to have done it!! This is a typical Norwegian thing to do: we went hiking on a Sunday and many locals were doing it too, in groups. And they were going past us RUNNING.

Start the trail at the cable car because going up the other side is harder, but no doubt this is a hard trail. I can't even begin to tell you how beautiful this is! The trail is marked but it is easy to get mislead in the first meter of the trip. The first bit will be very rocky, but don't give up, it will level out a bit. We heard bells and saw big sheep on the side of the hill. About that time my husband tripped on a rock and fell in some of that sheep poop. He was smelly the rest of the trip. Do the trail, it is long and will take at least 5 hours. Take plenty of water and snacks.
