A lovely area to wander around but it can get very busy. We visited a few times during our stay in Bergen, one was in the evening when the shops were shut but the alley ways stay open and there were only a handleful of other people there so it was a much nicer experience!
There are stairs going upstairs but for the most part normal folk aren't allowed up them despite this not being very clear. The shops are mostly all selling the same things and generally all for around the same price.
I have to admit I was very surprised to see many of the shops selling reindeer fur and having deer heads as decorations. If you're an animal lover be warned!
In general a nice little place to spend some time when it's a bit quieter. It had a very Harry Potter Diagon Alley feel to it too.

Renovations were being done while we were there, so some of the buildings were covered in drop cloths. The historic wooden buildings have been rebuilt after fires throughout history, but they represent a trade capital of the past. We walked through parts of it. Active shops inhabit the buildings on the ground level by the wharf. Boutique shops and a few small specialty food shops.

I saw this on TV but i didn't find this until the last few hours of my trip.
I think as it's low season, it's not really open. It was located just off the left hand side if the main harbour behind the old / new mock buildings.
All the buildings are wooden with narrow walkways and it gives a sense of what the fishing warehouses were like.

We spent almost the whole day in this area. Had a late start and hada lovely lunch at Olivia's. We then spent a good deal of time exploring the streets, harbour, souvenir shops etc. We had massive waffles from a street vendor. There is a fish market in the area which had octopuses and stuff in tanks! (We are vegetarians, it amazes us!) It's a very lively and crowded area with live musicians in the street. It was a lovely sunny day but wasn't too hot, so it was perfect. In the evening we climbed up Mt Floyen. Took usva little while with many stops, especially at a large shallow water tank with fountains in it where there were many children playing. Our girls enjoyed themselves playing in the water. The view from the top of spectacular and we managed to catch the sunset on time. Tired, we took the funicular back back down.
This is the perfect place to enjoy there's small town charm of Bergen.

It may look like a Disneyland attraction circa 1955, but it has historical value in showing Bergen's former glory as the salted cod trading center of Europe. The Norwegians brought the cod to the port and the Germans would buy it to sell to the rest of the continent. Think of Bryggen as a really old Fisherman's Wharf. Besides, the facade of the colorful plankboard buildings makes it the ideal subject of refrigerator magnets. Sure, it's picturesque because it's always the opening shot of any travel video about Bergen.
But as usual, what lies beneath is what fascinates as the narrow alleyways between the leaning warehouses houses interesting shops, art galleries, and museums. Apparently it's been rebuilt several times over the centuries due to fires and such, so it's like an HGTV program on a constant loop. also noticed otherwise normal housewives turn into cheek-sucking fashion models posing against the aged planks for their Instagram moments. My husband and I tried to emulate their approach, but we didn't starve ourselves enough to look waif-like. More whale-like.

Bryggen is a place with lots of small but a variety of stores in wooden buildings with small streets in between. Nice to roam around and browse in the shops. It has seating area at the harbour side, but completely empty due to the rain.

Just cool. The buildings in reality are not that old for the most part. Well, old by standards in the US but not so much based on what is around many places in Europe. Due to the many fires in Bryggen, several of the buildings are less than 200 years old. The grounds and the plan of course is much older than that, it’s just that the structures had to be rebuilt. The history of the place naturally is much older and dates back to about 1100. The first thing you notice about the buildings is that many of them have a considerable lean to them. I myself am fairly rule bound when it comes to architecture, so seeing all these buildings that are not square is a bit of a mess in my head. They are doing a lot to shore the structures and maintain them while still being able to keep the existing exteriors and make them safe for the huge number of tourists going through them all. The area is full of shops from small local crafts people selling their wares to large souvenir shops, bars and restaurants. Truly an amazing place and the heartbeat of the old part of the city.

Aside from the fact that it is a colorful place, it becomes the focus for learning about some truly important aspects of history. It is a World Heritage Site for good reason. Many restaurants in the area, so it is part of an enjoyable walk.

The old hanseatic wharf is the true symbol of the old trading city of Bergen where fish arrived from the north to be sold to foreign merchants. The wharf is extremely well kept. At the same time it is an exciting place in summer with lots of outdoor restaurants and a small boat harbour.

We visited the place during COVID 19 and few visitors were around at the time we were there. Interesting colorful buildings with souvenirs shops closed due to Easter holidays.
Overall I can imagine it is crowded place if no pandemic and Easter is the applied combination.

I will be on the Hurtigruten cruise north from Bergen to Kirkenes. Has anyone made this trip in the winter and have any recos for what to do at the stops in Alesund, Tromso, Trondheim, etc. Know these are not long stops or huge towns but want to make the most of it. Thanks for your thoughts.

The Hurtigruten Ship being a working Ship , it handles a lot of Cargo , mail , transfers, etc. So it has a lot of brief stops . Take advantage of the longer stops to Go Down and visit the Towns . The 15 minute stops are too short to disembark.
In Tromso there is an options Tour of the Artic Cathedral w a Concert, which is wonderful (listed at one of Top 10 to visit in Norway). But If you do not like to spend for that , you may walk to the Plaza and see shops and the other old Cathedral , . Note that Tromso is a Place With a high percentage to see the Aurora Lights. WE did see it in Tromso, but on the Ship
Trondheim is another longer stop , and is a beautiful Town . There is Also an options city Tour which lets you see Everything in town in a couple of hours. If you chose not to spending for the tour, you have Just enough time to walk and visit the Nidarosdomen Cathedral (I would say a must), walking past the Ravnkloa Sail Boat ports, Market Square, Rockheim Museum, and maybe a souvenir shop .

Wondering the best way to tour Bergen for a day off our cruise ship. The offerings from the ship don't sound so great. Is the town within walking distance from the port? Did you do the funicular? Any advice would be appreciated. sodicm@temple.edu

Not sure if you have already been yet but if not.... walk it yourselves. The best info is from the local shop owners or cafe assistants so take your time, travell the beautiful streets and talk yo everyone...they all speak English.
Bryggen has a strong history so hear it from the story tellers.
Take you camera and mind your head as you walk through the famous old wooden buildings.

Most of Bergen is easily walkable, and do remember there is a bus! The drivers will speak a fair amount of English, if Norwegian is not your first (or your second or your third...) language, so they can help you if you can’t seem to figure out the routes and schedules (I never could!) Alot of Bergen can be seen in a day, so you should have no trouble getting in alot of sights on your own. There are plenty of guided tours in town, but I did everything solo and on my own with a little research and planning before I arrived and felt I got just as much out of it as I would have with a tour. The Bryggen wharf is not to be missed (but heads up, some of the shops inside were a bit disappointing) and hiking up Mt. Fløyen offered some amazing views (there’s also a cable car if you’re strapped for time/not favoring a work out!) Hope this helps? Bergen was fantastic, you’re going to have a great time!

The train ride from Oslo to Bergen is spectacular. We did it as part our our Norway tour earlier this year. The line starts at sea level in Oslo and goes straight over the top of the coastal mountain range well above the tree line and into glaciers. One gets a view of just about every type of scenery possible in Norway.
Consider a 1/2 day detour on the even more spectacular Flam Railway from Myrdal at which the Oslo train stops.
In Bergen we stayed in Hotell Hordaheimem (Best Western Plus) which very central and right by the Harbour opposite Bryggen.I would think this would be OK for the cruise ship terminal.
The hotel address is C.Sundtsgate, 5004, Bergen.

My wife and I are going to be visiting Norway in July 2018. Is there a way to get from Bergen to Manger and then to Bøvågen? My grandmother was born in Bøvågen on the Bø Farm. We are hoping to find decendents of Kristen M Ananniasen before we arrive, but want to see the farm even if we do not find family members.

That's really interesting, tracing your ancestry. There is a ship service for the Norwegian coast called Hurtegrutigan (I'm not sure if I've spelt that right). It's a good way to explore Norway and might serve the destinations you are intending to visit. Where towns and villages are served with railways, this is a good way to travel as well.

Hello all,
I plan to go to Bergen from Oslo. I heard there are different ways to do so. I am thinking to take a flam train, since I heard is really beautiful and from there take a boat to see fjord and finish in Bergen. can someone please suggest how can I do that. can I reserve a combo ticket?

You can google "Norway in a nutshell" and have someone putting together a combo for you. But it's totally doable on your own. Just buy the train ticket from Oslo to Flam on NSB website, and the Naeroyfjord cruise from Flam to Gudvangen on visitflam website. Then catch a bus from Gudvangen to Voss (cannot be booked in advance, but seldom full) and switch to NSB train again from Voss to Bergen (local train, no booking necessary).
You can do it in one day, but I'd recommend staying in Flam for 1 night and visit Stegastein or go on Fjord Safari. Wake up early the next morning to enjoy Flam' s beauty before truckloads of tourists arrive.

I along with my wife visiting Bergen for 3days on 1st,2nd & 3rd May,2017. Can somebody suggest me the things to do during 3 days. One day we are planning to go on full day fjord tour to flam & back. Please let me know from where I can get the tickets for this tour & what is cost of ticket per person. Is this cost of ticket fixed or there is option for low price ticket if we purchase it now online?

online is the best option if you like adventure i would advise you to de a hike to the glaciers or bisit the pulpit rock if you like nature you can climb the stotzeklieven trail then go by foot through the lakes ending in the funicular stop is a 2 hours tryp really great the climb is hard but totally worth it you can go to the wooden viking church in fonton dont enter but the building is worth it
