About
Fløyen is a must do while in Bergen. Fløibanen, the funicular brings you up the hillside, from Bergen city centre to the top of the mountain in 6 minutes. At Mount Fløyen you will find beautiful views of Bergen, the nearby islands, fjords and mountains surrounding Bergen. Fløyen is a great destination for hiking, mountain biking and soft adventures. We are surrounded by hillsides, mountains, forests, nice little lakes and numerous trails. We offer daily guided hikes “Hiking Mount Fløyen" and Mountain bike rental from mid June until mid August. We love children, and the children love Fløyen. Let the kids explore our playground, Fløysletten climbing playground, the Troll forest. Try out canoe paddling at lake Skomakerdiket (mid June - mid August), feel the adrenalin rush in FløyenKids ziplinepark and get at kiss from our lovely goats at Fløyen. Fløistuen shop and cafè have souvenirs, perfect gifts and memories from Bergen and Norway. We offer local food as “Fløyenbollen", the cinnamon-bun and our organic soup “Fløyensuppen". Fløien Folkerestaurant is open daily from May until September.

When you have less than half a day to explore Bergen, you need to be rather disciplined about your sightseeing. At least that's what the anal-retentive side said to me in private, and I knew riding this funicular was on the top of the list. You may ask why, and I would probably raise one eyebrow and clapback "The view, of course." Fortunately, our hotel was just five minutes away from the lower terminus where we were thrilled to find there was no queue of tourists. We paid our 150 NOK round-trip tickets (about $15.40 in US dollars) and were able to get backward-facing seats where we could see the scenic view rising in front of us behinds the heads of the other passengers.

The cars have stepped floors and open windows as they climb almost a thousand feet against the relatively steep slope of Mount Floyen. The ride took about eight minutes as it made two intermediate stops for locals who actually use the funicular as a commuter train (...how frustrating that must be for them during peak tourist season.) Once we arrived at the upper terminus, we first took notice of the expansive viewing terraces which afford spectacular views of Bergen around its harbor. As we walked around the terraces, we began to realize how big the city was as it's Norway's largest city next to Oslo.

Once we took most of our photos, we noticed there was a restaurant, a cafe, a souvenir shop, and a playground, which frankly turned the area into more of an amusement park. My husband was intrigued by signs to a nearby lake which was a few minutes stroll away in the woods. There wasn't much to the lake except a flurry of gnats, so we didn't stay long. Even though the funicular was more crowded going down, the ride back didn't take any longer than the ride up. I have to credit the operating company (Fløibanen AS) for a smooth operation. Listen, I've ridden my share of funiculars from Hong Kong's Peak Tram to Angel's Flight in LA, and this one was definitely in the upper tier.

We were in Bergen for half a day as a cruise ship stop. Someone had told us we would have to be early off the ship and make our way straight to the funicular if we wanted to stand a chance of getting on it. However we had taken a leisurely walk to the nearby area and thought we would take a look at the queue. Well there wasn’t one. We bought a ticket at the booth (150kr return in June 22) and boarded straight away. There is limited seating in each section but more room to stand. The electronic boards suggested trains were every 30 mins which worried us a little in case it got busy however they were pretty much running up and down constantly.

The station and the carriage were spotless. The ride up and down is very swift (under 3 minutes). If you can try to get the bench seats in the lowest carriage for the best views.

The views from the top are spectacular. We could see our cruise ship in its berth in the distance. There is a lot to see at the top but our time was limited so we just walked to the lake which was enchanting. You could easily spend several hours up here.

When we arrived back at the base station it was busier with a small queue for tickets from the booth but there were electronic machines which very few seemed to be using. If you had purchased your tickets in advance you could scan the QR code on your mobile to open the gates.

This is worth the time to get some great views of Bergen and the surrounding area. It's a nice ride up and down, there's lots of walking/hiking paths at the top, a short zipline for kids, as well as a restaurant and viewing areas. I recommend buying your tickets online so that you don't have to wait in the regular line buying tickets at the entrance...can save you lots of time.

The funicular at 75 kr single journey offers a nice ride with several stops at local stations on the mountain. During pour visit in May, it only ran regularly after 10 am and was closed in the afternoon for a private event? Take your time, because up on the mountain there is a lot to do, nice walking, healthy forest. And a great view of Bergen. You can walk back to the city in 3 to 3,3 km but we didn't do this because it rained heavily. Still, a nice and not to be missed spot.

I'll start off with a tip for visitors taking the tram. When you approach the lower station, you will most likely see a very long line of people waiting to buy their tickets. To the right of that line, where people exit the tram, inside, is three or four self service machines where you can buy tickets, if you are paying with a card. I'm pretty sure that you can walk past the line, right to these machines, buy your tickets and proceed.

That being said, the tram is a fun ride that offers an increasingly great view. When you reach the top, there is a terrace, most likely crammed with people, where you can take pictures and selfies with the city below as a backdrop. There is also a restaurant and snack bar, and a big play area for kids. You will find fairly friendly goats roaming the nearby forest. There are walking paths throughout the forest and one leads to a little pond, where you can take out a canoe for free, and paddle around. There is also a snack bar and toilets there. Also in the forest, not far from the tram is a little amphitheatre where they do shows for kids, and an awesome play park for kids. The best thing is that once you roam a couple hundred metres from the tram, it gets quieter and less crowded, as 90% of the people never go any further into the park, and you can find little spots where there is almost no one else there. There is apparently a trail that takes you all the way to Mt Ulriken, but we were not that adventurous.

Fabulous hike up the mountain on a sunny but pleasant day. You can take the funicular both ways but we choose to hike up and take it funicular on our way down. The hike is strenuous in bits, especially if you've had a heavy Italian lunch and gobbled up Waffles with Belgian Chocolate and ice cream on top of that! There are many points for you to stop and enjoy the views. We stopped at a shallow fountain with a lake on the way up and the children had a fun time playing in the water. At the top, the view is simply breathtaking. You can see the harbour stretching out in front of you and the water gleaming with the setting sun in the background. We spent quite a while just enjoying the setting. There's also a playground at the top and a restaurant and a souvenir shop. We took about 1.5 hours reaching the top, but we ambled our way up. The funicular was also a fun, quick ride down.

We spent an eventful half day on Fløyen mountain. Even though it is quite pricy for a 3 minute ride, we decided to take the funicular up the hill because the walk up would have been quite challenging for the children. Plus we wanted to experience the view from the funicular, which is really amazing. We only had to stand in line for about 15 minutes but I understand that usually there is a larger crowd.
On the mountain we found several playgrounds, a somewhat outdated Trollskogen, good ice cream and a souvenir shop with many little treasures. The view from the top is worth many photos. The walk to and around the lake is very peaceful and beautiful. We did not stand in line for renting boats as it was a weekend and many people wanted to try it.
We also saw goats and hamsters which was quite the attraction for our kids.
There are several possibilities for different hikes starting from Fløyen mountain but we did not have time to follow any of the longer ones.
Because we had good weather, we decided to walk down back to the city center, which took us about an hour at a very slow pace. We found a playground with an extra long slide along the way and that was a nice surprise for the kids.

We had dreamed of this place and we have not been disappointed ! Everyone does it but you just need to look at the view to understand why ! The journey in funicular is of course part of its charm as you see the city getting further and further away.
We went up quite late so we didn't get to enjoy everything that the Mount Floyen has to offer but it will just be an excuse to come back !

However, if you are planning to use your Bergen Card discount to get to the top, be sure to come while the ticket office at the city station is open; as you won't be able to get the discount if you buy your ticket from the machine. (As a lot of places, the office closes early even in summer, at 4 pm in our case but we went up at 10:30pm)

It's fun to take the funicular to the top for views over the city. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed. And another disappointing thing I found out after I returned to the USA and read my journal from my 2018 trip to Bergen. It noted that the the funicular cost was 95 NOK at that time and this year it was 150 NOK; quite a jump in price in 4 yrs.

We enjoyed the ride up the funicular and the view from the top. A couple of notes:

There’s often a line to buy tickets; don’t wait in it. Either buy tickets on line, or use the machines to the right of the ticket windows. You’ll save either a little, or a lot of time.

Consider buying a one-way ticket and walking down. It’s quite a pleasant walk, even though it’s steep in a few places. The path down is pretty easy to find - walk behind the building where the funicular ends, and you’ll see signs to the city center. Figure 30 to 45 minutes depending on your pace, and how often you stop to take pictures of the lovely views.
