A last minute activity turned to one of my favourite things we did in Oslo. For around £15 you can hire a pair of skates and take to (what I have just learned to be) a frozen water feature in the square just outside the National Theatre. The space is large enough for a fair few skaters without getting in each others way. With practically no time limit on the length of time you can hire the skates, this can be as short or long activity as you wish.

We saw on the visit oslo site that this was set up from Nov-March in the Centre of oslo, just off Karl Johans Gate and im so glad we had chance to visit.
We came around 5pm when it was dark and all the trees were lit up with twinkly lights and it felt magical. Had such a good time skating on the rink, skates were only 100 NOK (£8 ish) to rent for as long as you wanted, and use of the rink is free if you have your own skates.
One thing to mention is that there is no storage for your other shoes, so bring a bag big enough to put them in and theres space in the middle of the rink to keep an eye on them.
They played such great music while you skated, absolutely loved every minute - felt like i was in a film! brilliant

Ice skating on a frozen fountain in the middle of Oslo. You can rent skates from the cabin for 110k, a little expensive but you can have the skates all day.

Visited during the Christmas markets. the rink was busy with lots of skaters and also a competition when we visited. However, for a christmas ice rink for the main city centre christmas market it was actually smaller than i thought it would have been.

The ice skating rink is very small and there is no storage for your other shoes. Frogner stadion one is better and bigger.

This is a great spot in summer to take a rest with the kids. Kids can play in the water while you can cool your feet after a city walk.

But be careful: pick pocketters are active around this busy spot. Two people start chatting with you while a third one joins and distracts your attention from your personal belongings. Luckily we rejoined and the two of us after which they backed off (and disappeared in the crowd).

I took my 6 year old daughter here on a recent visit to Oslo. You can hire your skates for the day, and leave them in (and retrieve later) when you fancy going for food or a wee break. We were here in December and its just beautiful when the sun starts to set and the lights on the surrounding trees are lit. A most enjoyable afternoon!

Even without the ice this is a great park. Though the foliage was a bit past peak, it was still beautiful. It is certainly worth the few minutes it takes to stroll through. Great stop on the way to the National Gallery and there are a couple of coffee shops for a quick recharge.
