    She Lies...And She Floats
On our way to the Munch Museum, my wife and I saw this sculpture in the bay next to the Oslo Opera House. We found it to be unique with its appearance changing as you walked in different directions and at various distance. This is especially true when you look down on it from the Munch Museum. She Lies is a sculpture made by Monica Bonvicini. It is made of stainless steel and glass panels, measuring approximately 12 meters (39 ft) by 17 meters (56 ft) by 16 meters (52 ft). It really does seem like it is simply floating on the water in the fjord. We read that the sculpture was made by the artist as a three-dimensional interpretation of Caspar David Friedrich's painting The Sea of Ice (Das Eismeer). The massive mound of "ice" acts as a symbol of power in the Nordic region.

    Well...
I saw it. I took pictures of it. I have no bloody idea what exactly it is, or is supposed to be, as I haven't googled it yet. But hey, it's there.

    She Lies
The 'She Lies' sculpture by Monica Bonvicini can be found floating beside the Oslo Opera house. This sculpture of stainless steel and glass panels looks like a beautiful iceberg floating past the opera house.

It's a beautiful sculpture and the way it plays off the Opera House glacier-theme is fabulous. I loved that you can see it from anywhere in the harbor and that way it looks different with the time of day and the light shining on it. We didn't realize it moved until we took the Opera House tour and the docent told us it isn't stationary. It's a very interesting sculpture.

It is fascinating sculpture out in the water. We didn’t know about and discussed it, before finally (the second day) decide that it was a ship! Good view from the Munch Museum, for example.

Oslo is a very wealthy city, clean with pleasant people. The art is all over and we loved all we saw from Noble Peace center to the sculpture gardens to the
Resturant’s. The opera house was beautiful and if we had one more day…we would have bought tickets for a performance. We continued on to Longyearbyen and went to the Arctic where we became one with nature and followed the path of White Polar bears, arctic foxes, bearded seals, local reindeer and more. No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes and we were advised what to wear so the cold was never an issue.

Created by the Venetian artist Monica Bonvicini, it responds to tides, currents and winds thus changing perspectives as per ambient conditions.

Containing an agglomeration of materials such as glass, steel and Styrofoam. Inspired by Caspar David Friedrich’s painting The Sea of Ice it replicates the ice and its power depicted dramtically in the painting.

Launched in 2010 it is now a terrific landmark and focal point in Oslofjord in front of the Opera House.

An unusual monument placed on the water, in front of the Opera House. I can't say it's ugly but I'm sure I can't say it's a beautiful one.
