About
Founded in 1993, the Astrup Fearnley Museet is one of Scandinavia´s most notable museums for contemporary art. The museum holds the extensive Astrup Fearnley Collection, which includes significant works by artists like Matthew Barney, Paul Chan, Nicole Eisenman, Ida Ekblad, Trisha Donnelly, Félix González-Torres, Rachel Harrison, Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Jeff Koons, Glenn Ligon, Julie Mehretu, and Cindy Sherman. The museum presents changing exhibitions that both draw on the collection and new commissions by artists from all over the world. The museum building is designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and is surrounded by Tjuvholmen sculpture park with a view over the Oslo Fjord.

- MilenaKrakow, Poland35 contributionsIn search for modern artThough being surprisingly small, the museum is intriguing with a pretty souvenir store. Worth seeing for everyone interested in art and worth walking around it to get to a small public beach. You should also consider looking for the rest of the small art galleries scattered around the museum.Thank you so much for your review! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at our museum. It is certainly eclectic with works by RB Kitaj, Damien Hirst and David Hockney & combines paintings, sculpture and installations. The views from the museum are fantastic and add to the experience of visiting.Thank you so much for visiting us and giving us this nice review! Highlights were Damien Hirst exhibits, David Hockney paintings and the iconic Jeff Koons Michael Jackson & Bubbles sculpture. Well worth a hour of your time, then wander around the Tjuvholmen area.Dear Lynda, Thank you very much for your positive feedback! Hope you had the chance to see both the Astrup Fearnley Collection and the temporary exhibition Alpha Crucis - African Contemporary Art. Welcome back! - permia40,176 contributionsFabulous walk through some of modern art’s bestNot knowing anything about her it was interesting to begin with the temporary exhibition of works by Synnove Anker Aurdal. A pioneer of Norwegian Textile Art she took this medium from the traditional to modern forms. A multitude of modern artists are shown in the permanent collection. Damien Hirst features prominently with his signature animals in formaldehyde and pieces from the series God Alone Knows. Locker Sculpture by Matias Faldbakken comprises a series of lockers, of a type seen ubiquitously, crushed and bound together. Symbolises a rail against systems and institutions. Anselm Kiefer’s The High Priestess is another striking work. It shows 196 lead books in steel bookcases, with glass and copper wire. An individual book is also displayed. A famous creation in porcelain by Jeff Koons, namely Michael Jackson and Bubbles, proudly sits here. Cannot leave without a mention of the building. Can be classed as a work of art in its own right. Marvellous on the seafront.Visited June 2022Written June 19, 2022
- babajamalSinglewell, United Kingdom372 contributionsContemporary Art Museum. This is a contemporary Arts museum in the centre of Oslo. (Akkers Bridge) The star of the show was Damien Hirst’s cow and calf encased in formaldehyde. I also enjoyed seeing the Jeff Koons sculpture. The exhibits are limited to lesser known artists, but they are very good. I truly enjoyed my visit. Entrance fee is 100 NOK or free with Oslo Pass. I used my 24 hr Oslo Pass to all the museums I reviewed. Next to the exhibition hall are sculptures/installations .Visited September 2022Traveled soloWritten September 10, 2022

We had a lot of fun. The teens loved it, and wanted to go back the next day. Absolutely worth the ticket price. And beautiful outdoor surroundings.Visited October 2021Traveled with familyWritten October 17, 2021
- nagytibiBudapest, Hungary540 contributionsLimited exhibitionsThis museum has two buildings and the layout is unique. However, you feel that the place is half empty and they could place all the exhibition items into one of the buildings, there are vast empty spaces. Not one of the top museums in Oslo and not one of the best contemporary art museums in the world.Visited June 2022Written March 5, 2023
- StevenKolsterenGroningen, The Netherlands182 contributionsStunning architectureThe buidling by Renzo Piano is beautiful and not to be missed at the end of the boulevard. During our visit the collection was closed but the exhbition in the waterside buidling was very good. Price was reduced to 80 kr which seems fair. The garden with sculptures is nice on a sunny day with views of the harbour but has no interesting works (go to Ekestein instead)Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 12, 2023

This was an hour of my life I'll never get back - and that includes 30 minutes of waiting to get in, which turned out to be the best part. Don't waste your time!

The building is fantastic but save yourself NOK120 and go up the nearby lift for a better view.
Every city I travel to I visit the museum of modern art and this was by a distance the most disappointing. A few Damien Hirst pieces are the only redeeming works, apart from maybe the giant bookcase with giant books.
The rest is an absolute mess, the kind of tripe that gives modern art a bad name, avoid!

Ridiculous rubbish!
I have never seen so much garbage in all of my life.
If u wanna paid your hard earned money to see a bunch of stuff U can see laying around your house...like a rug with a hole in it .. Or a book .. By all means ... Go here but really ur wasting your time
people with zero artistic talent passing themselves off as artists... It's funny that some of the so called "art" doesn't even have cards next to it attempting to even explain what it represents ... It's like even the "artist" knows there is no way he can possibly explain away such rubbish.
When I was there the majority of the "art" was by Damien hirst ..Clearly a complete fraud ... Deluded into thinking he has talent... He doesn't. I just came from Paris ... Looking upon the Mona Lisa, works by Van Gogh and Picasso, Monet, da Vinci, munch, etc etc etc amazing work and then U come to Oslo and see a cow cut in half ... And they reckon that's art .... Dream on.

I have never been more disappointed and felt more ripped off from a museum visit in my life. To even describe most of the exhibits as "art" is a joke. Really, blow up a dolphin balloon and hang some pots and pans from it. Much of the so-called art looked like it came from my daughter's kindergarten class. It is a real shame that one of the most fantastic areas of the Oslo waterfront is taken up by this museum. A beautiful building though. What a waste.

Sorry to hear that you were so displeased.
I hope you had the chance to talk to our museum hosts, they are art historians and artists who can provide the background for the different artworks and the ideas behind them.
The dolphin is not actually a blow up toy, it is made of aluminum to look like a blow up toy. The same with the caterpillar.

The architect, Renzo Piano, shouldn't put this in his portfolio.
The museum is about modern art but what was exposed, I didn't like. I prefere my lovely Tate Modern. You can see some Koons and Hirsh.

Beautiful from the outside. The building really is impressive. Inside, the art displayed is generally a case of the emperor's new clothes - contemporary pieces that substitute shock value and irony for beauty and depth. Of particular note was the staff member standing by the ticket machine berating someone who fumbled slightly on their way in. "It's actually very simple.." she snidely remarked... She fit in well with the self-consciously cool condescention of the museum as a whole. Avoid (even if you can get in for free with the Oslo Pass).

I thought that this was a very mediocre modern art museum. It did not have that much in good exhibits and some were, in my opinion, downright stupid. I would save time and money by going to the modern art museum in Stockholm. It is far better. Or see the Munch museum or national gallery in Oslo.

Whilst admittedly more of a traditionalist, I've always found something to appeal amongst the exhibitions in modern art galleries. Not so in this one. The building is beautiful, but appears to be a real life version of 'emperor's new clothes'. I cannot imagine anything here will hold up to artistic scrutiny in a couple of hundred years. If it does, I'm glad I'll be well gone by then!!! I have never given anywhere such a low rating on Tripadvisor before.
