- Monika K.Ozarow Mazowiecki, Poland93 contributionsGreat walking place at beautiful lakeThe lake measures 0.39 km², and is 17 meters deepest. In the summer it is teeming with life: people run, make barbecues, walk. it is a good place for a family with children. In autumn it gets quieter and calmer here. I went to the lake for a walk and walked all around it (4-kilometer route around the lake). There are places on the route where you can light a bonfire. Along the way, you can also sit on one of the many benches or deviate a little from the main path and relax by the water. In summary, Sognsvann is a pleasant place to spend time with friends or children.Visited June 2019Written February 20, 2020
- NK AnnamáriaOslo, Norway303 contributionsAmazing nature at the end of metro line 5It is a beautiful lake and great surroundings. It is a perfect place for a nice walk in any season. The walkway around the lake is not long (3 km) but is very wide and accessible with a stroller all the way. There are longer paths marked so if you are up for a challenge, Songsvann Lake is a starting point for hikes of different length and difficulty. During the Winter you can find excellent cross country ski tracks in this area and in Summer Songsvann turns into a beach where the more adventurous people can get a chilling swim. A great plus is the easy availability of Songsvann Lake, which is at the end of the nr. 5 metro line.Visited April 2021Written June 4, 2021
- JyrkiRovaniemi, Finland40 contributionsBirdwatchingVisited this refreshing place during my latest trip to Oslo and I was pleasantly surprised by the place. Nice gravel path around the lake with multiple stops and plenty of opportunities to take photographs of birds and other wildlife. I saw, and photographed, at least one treecreeper, many starlings and blackbirds and couple of large geese too. Being an amateur photographer and enjoying walks and treks in wild, having this kind of place so near and so easily accessed from city centre is a big plus. Nice place, even in early spring with snow and ice, I can only imagine what this place looks like when it's warmer and everything is fresh green.Visited March 2022Written April 11, 2022

- Kjetil SOslo, Norway63 contributionsEasy access, good for mental health, free of charge (and no catch!)There's no reason not to go here. The atmosphere, the air, the sounds, the smell... There's a reason why this is one of Oslo's no. 1 recreational choices, summer and winter! The metro line 6 Sognsvann go there. You take the metro from the central station (Jernbanetorget) and get off at the last station (Sognsvann). The ride takes about 20 minutes and it's totally worth it. When you get off the metro at the final stop, if you're unsure where to go, imagine the metro continuing in a straight line (through the bushes and parking lot) for another 400 meters and you'll get to the water. If you still feel lost, just follow anyone in a jogging outfit (pretty much every metro train has at least one passenger who's going to Sognsvann to jog) or any elementary school class. There's a 99.99% chance they are heading for the Sognsvann area. The area has a big lake, a nice dirt road around it to jog or bike on. It's also possible to play beach volley ball there. If you're taking a hike through the woods, don't be surprised if you run into some harmless yet strange stuff. But I won't go into details on that one. There's always Google ;) 5 out of 5 recommends for this one. If you're in town and want to get away from the urban jungle, this is one of the great offers Oslo has in terms to chill out or work out recreations.Written May 18, 2014
- Luise H84 contributionsGo early in the day!A short ride (15 minutes or so) with the T-bane from Oslo Central Station to the end of the green line #6 and it is hard to see, that you are close to a large city. Sognsvann is a beautifully situated lake. You can walk around it in an hour and a half or so – and the path is also suited for strollers or wheelchairs. Take your time – and bring a picnic and firewood, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. In the summertime it is perfect for a swim – and in the wintertime it is a great place for ice skating. If you feel like exploring the surroundings a bit more, there are several hikes into the woods. However – since it is so close to Oslo - it can become much crowed during the day! But if you go early in the day (9-10 am) you might have it all to yourselfVisited January 2017Written January 18, 2017
- Heng How NSingapore, Singapore7,464 contributionsEvening walkThis lake is besides the sport university whereby you can see many sport persons doing their training over there. Of course there are many other people who like to walk, run, hike, swim or just love natural will come here for the purpose. You can try the shortest or the longest route depending the time or training you are targeting at. It is a nice place with cooling temperature for the purpose. Depending on the season, you enjoy snow, flowers, and many others.Visited July 2018Traveled with familyWritten July 16, 2018

- Finbarr M23 contributionsBeautiful lake with easily accessible nearby forest trailsWe walked from the frognersetern restaurant/end of the metro line through the forest to the lake; the weather was sunny and the walk was a leisurely 1.5 hours at most, stopping to take pics of the beautiful views. The lake was gorgeous, calm and reflective, and the walking route around it is almost completely next to the shore. The metro stop at the edge of the lake is only 20mins or so back into the centre of oslo.Visited September 2015Traveled with friendsWritten September 4, 2015
- MariaVVVCorfu, Greece19 contributionsEasy to visitFrom Oslo Central Station, you take the metro line 6 to Sognsvann, and 15-20 minutes later you arrive at the end of the line. The quickest and cheapest way to experience a little part of the beautiful Norwegian nature. A lake surrounded with forest, still frozen in early April but with birds and flowers around. Clean paths around the lake, very easy to follow and explore. Amazing!Visited April 2015Traveled as a coupleWritten April 15, 2015

I had heared that Norwegian nature is pristine, but this is not. Too many people, no nice cafes or hang-outs, no innovation. Just lots of people walking or running around the lake. Could be cleaner.

Great outdoors area for a run, acitivites on the water or just relaxing in the wood or park. So great to have it close to the city with just a ride with the T-bane away.

The scenery is nice, the hike around the lake is easy and approximately 3 km. Often many birds. The only drawback is that it may be a lot of people hiking and running.

A beautiful lake to walk around for about an hour. Especially lovely in Autumn. You can trek more in the woods if you want. Easy to reach. We were there on a drizzly October day but it was still really beautiful. If we lived in Oslo we would come here every weekend.

I'm thinking of wild camping around here in July, as I will fly with my kit I would not be able to bring camping gas, is there somewhere I can buy this near the train station there?

I don't think you are allowed to camp there. It's a protected area and their rules are pretty strict.

How do I get there via metro (I.e. which stop)? Also, are there places for lunch, hire bikes etc? Planning on visiting in May. Thank you!

Choose the Sognsvann-line metro and get off at the last stopp. Then you have about 500 meters to walk. No bike-hires, no restaurants, but a kiosk or two for ice-cream, sodas and chocolates.

I am wondering about Mørketur i Marka, night hiking upcoming event in October. Is it "safe" for tourists that doesnt know the area, and what about metro night schedule and coming back to the city?

Depending on what time at night you are talking about. Probably the metro will be going till approximately 0100 am.
Otherwise it is very safe as the tracks are very well marked with signs. The app is also excellent.
It is very beautiful to hike in Marna at night. You may also spend the night at several huts around in Marka.
Good luck and enjoy.

hello all,
I am traveling to norway for 4 days. I will arrive in oslo. but I heard there is not much in oslo and in order to feel real norway I must go to fjords. So question is, since I have 4 days and want to spend 1 day at least in oslo, where should I go and how? I rather not to fly really far

There are actually a lot to see in Oslo. I'd suggest taking the boat from Aker Brygge to the nearest islands (hovedøya etc), visit Vigelandsparken, Sognsvann lake, walk along Akerselva (the river) starting from Maridalsvannet or Nydalen, visit the Botanic garden, walk in the city center (Opera, Karl Johan, Nationatheater & Palace, Aker Brygge area & castle), go up to Ekebergparken which is really beautiful.
The transportation in Oslo is excellent. You can buy your tickets at Ruter, where you can also find a map or ask for advice. It is located at Jernbanetorget, which is the central station.
Make sure that you have a valid ticket. There is constant ticket control in all means of public transportation and the fine is really expensive.
Have a great time!
